I have a very hard time falling asleep. My mind never wants to turn off or even slow down. I just lay there and try to think of nothing for hours until I finally doze off.
This is my occasional problem. Brain just doesnt want to stop. I've got a few different methods, they dont always work but maybe youll have better luck.
1) Shut your eyes. Focus on the back of your eyelids. you will see shades of black and blue. Focus on one particular blob of color. keep that one thing in your head. focus so hard that your brain doesnt get distracted. think of it as a screensaver, watch one point and this can sometimes get your brain preoccupied to the point that it gets bored.
2) Go online and find an IQ test or some other quiz and do that. if you can get your brain to stop randomly finding things to think about then focus on the test for a bit. Basically if your like me and your heads just jumping from one thing to another then if you can get it to reduce the number to 1 it can slow down and stop easier.
All your solutions (except maybe the whiskey) are dependant on you not being physically tired. I've been exhausted physically and my brain just wouldnt stop randomly coming up with shit to think about.
Thats nothing. My cat has the supernatural power to wake me up to be fed 20 minutes before my alarm goes off.
She's very polite about it however.
"I'll just choose this moment to drag some change across the dresser"
"Hum, I know ive rarely ever wanted to sit on his lap but nows a good time to try."
I've recently had to work for a few weeks at a different time schedule which has me sleeping much earlier then standard so to help me relax i would take a time release meletonin tablet about 20-30 minutes before my sleep time. It worked pretty well as it could relax me and to a small degree make me tired without any groggy feelings in the morning.
Now that im back on my schedule I occasionally will have trouble sleeping but am afraid to take one of these or any sleeping medication because by the time i think about it i only have about a window of 6 or less hours to sleep before waking for work and the medications say 7-8 hours sleep expected.
So my question is this...if you take half a pill will it still relax you or want you to sleep but half as long as the med advertises or will it just not work at all being too diluted. (I suppose there are different answers to sleeping pills vs meletonin). I just want to make sure the groggy feeling does not carry over.
I design and build spacecraft in my mind because wiring is boring as shit and knocks me right the fuck out
I do something like this but instead just come up with an idea for a story then make an entire universe surrounding it. Tires my brain out at the end of the day and then I'm out like a light.
I have a superhuman power to always wake up 5 minutes before I my alarm is supposed to go off. Doesn't matter how early it is, I just do it.
it's because you've settled into a routine. there's a part of your brain that is pretty much the "brain's watchdog" (can't remember the specifics, may have something to do with your limbic system/amygdala[a part of the limbic system]). basically this watchdog part of the brain is responsible for the fight or flight response, but the reason why you wake up at night when you hear something out of the ordinary. you may have trouble going to sleep with a squeaky fan, but it will become a part of your routine and you get used to it and can sleep. later, if somebody is breaking into your house and you wake up to the sound of breaking glass -- that's your brain telling you that something is out of the ordinary and you're in danger. it's been a while since i've covered this material, but i'm pretty sure that's right. of course, there might be other areas of the brain that play a role in this as well, but that's the long and short of it.
but because you've developed this routine, and you know when to expect this alarm, you preemptively wake up. i do this too, as i'm sure a lot of people do. personally, and this is speculation, i think it's because i dread my alarm clock, so i'm ready to wake up at whatever time, but i despise hearing the alarm go off. so i wake up earlier to avoid that. hearsay, nonsense, theory, whatever. hope you found this useful/interesting.
and in case anybody was wondering or cared, the dude who died od'd on painkillers.

There is this dream I had. It started out with me and somebody I don't know but who felt like a friend running from a hit squad by car. He says 'I know a place where they won't come'. We drive up a snowy mountain in one of those snow cat tracked things and come to a sandstone cathedral like building. We enter and are welcomed by an important looking person in a uniform standing between the benches. I look to his right and there is another chamber. The floor is littered with tiny bones, regularly arranged on each tile. I see a severely rotted zombie walking over them, well only a leg and thigh. On this leg dozens of tiny green irised eyes open and stare out blanky. I look at my own foot, standing between the bones myself and now see the same tiny eyes opening all over it.
I fall backwards in shock. A fat naked man comes over and calmly takes my foot and presses his fingers deep inside in what I guess were the sockets where the eyes were. He says something reassuringly like 'you are one of us now'. This however does not freak me out, I take it all in and a warm feeling comes over me. I can't remember how the dream continues exactly but some parts are looking for others who were initiated/part of the same group and feeling very connected and purposeful. And there was a restaurant with a ceiling and several floors above made up from mattresses which i all crawled down through.

I know bathtubs are becoming more of a rarity, but I would suggest taking a hot bath if you can.
Fill it up so it's really hot, but still barely manageable. Then slowly sink yourself in and let your body adjust to the heat.
It's pretty relaxing and tiring, so try not to faint. Plenty of folks have set up a exquisite bath only to drown in their sleep, or break their face from falling after getting out. Try not to think about those people.
you are going to be in a high school haunted by dead scorpions
Man, a scorpion can't kill a dude, gotta think bigger.

I had a dream one time about Dante's Virgil leading me through the 9 circles of Hell. In each circle, different family members were tortured for the various crimes they had committed in life. I think I was like 8 at the time.
Then around that same time period I had a dream about wondering through a water painting styled after dia de los muertos. I was in a stadium and people were standing around, but the dream was completely silent.
I've always wondered how good it feels to sleep next someone you like like.
It must be awesome in the winter.
i hate sleeping next to people. i never get a good night's sleep because i keep rolling into a person and waking up. if i get married we are doing separate beds like a 50s sitcom.

Have you done it much? You'd be amazed how easy it is to get used to it.

Yeah storms are really cool. I love storms at all times.

pounding rain and lighting every 2 or 3 seconds
it was glorious I loved it.
also if you can't sleep just tug one out
it had that beautiful kind of thunder that sounds like a zipper and then BAM AN EXPLOSION
didn't need to turn lights to get around either, the lighting had that covered
and it dropped the temperature down to a reasonable-for-sleeping level
it owned!
