Motorcycle move: Getting stuff from SD to GA or WV/VA? Contact ComicCon attendees?

I'll be moving from San Diego, CA to GA (metro Atlanta area) or WV soon (border with NW VA). The thing is, I'm riding my motorcycle. I have a bunch of stuff that would cost WAY too much to ship but they are still things that I don't want to sell, including a 65" flat-panel TV, a gaming PC, motorcycle parts, etc.

Comic Con happens to be in town. I know a lot of exhibitors come long ways in large trucks and presumably go back with a lot less stuff (assuming things sold well). I also imagine that a lot of attendees may have room in their car for an item or two. I guess I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction for asking these people publicly (something tells me they areN'T reading local Craigslist ads while at the Con).

Heck, if anyone here happens to be going to one of those two areas, I'll pay you to take what you can fit!

Well, you'd have to find someone based out of the area. I doubt anyone is going to want to go out of their way after Comic Con (which is exhausting) to help you move large objects. Especially if they're not properly located there (i.e. they're based near or outside of Atlanta).

It's a really weird request (I'd look at you like you were crazy if a stranger walked up to me and asked this) and I think you'd be better off packing your stuff in one those moving cubes and having a company do it for you.

Barring that, just walk up and ask them. I don't know how else you'd go about it.

You're asking a lot. Is it out of the question for you to just rent a Uhaul or something and haul the bike in the back along with everything else?

  • CZroeCZroe Registered User regular
Freight, movers, truck rental, etc are absolutely out of the question. I've done the research. I already rent a storage cube and having it or a U-haul would cost THOUSANDS.

Yes, I specifically am looking for someone "based" in those areas or attendees who drove from those areas. There are many, obviously, so I don't think it's that weird and I'd be the only one who might lose is anyone is untrustworthy. I'm sure someone who is returning home on the road would want some help with the gas money for the return trip and may be willing to help out. I really don't want to sell my computer, TV, and tools (motorcycle stands) just to have to buy them again and likely lose a lot of money ("sell now" price here vs. normal market price there).

Have you looked into PODS/Pack Rat moveable storage containers? I've found them to be quite affordable when I've moved. Also, moving is expensive. That's something you're just going to have to accept. It may be cheaper to sell your stuff and just buy new things.

That, and do you really want to trust a complete stranger with your expensive electronic equipment?

EDIT: Also, I assume you're not actually going to Comic Con. How are you even going to contact someone within the convention? It's a mad house in there.

You aren't giving yourself many options. Honestly the best option would be to probably ship it via a company like Uhaul or Pod or something similar to that. You're still talking about $1,300 for a U-Box cross country.

I have a feeling most people are going to tell you to get bent as far as your Comic Con idea goes. It is also questionable judgement to give your expensive items to random con-goers/vendors in the hope that you will get them intact at the other end, or get them at all. In the end they are just THINGS. If they are that important to you, shell out the cash to ship them, or get some more adequate transportation.

U-ship, Big Box, Yellow Freight, etc all start at about $1,500. Looking into this option doesn't mean I lose my option to sell them if I can't find someone. I would obviously look at their ID, get a phone number, and have a witness, which I would hope is deterrent enough. I would be paying them, after all.

As for finding someone at the con, when I was at QuakeCon2003, I used the QuakeCon forums to do something similar. I don't know where to ask to reach Comic Con attendees but I'm sure some frequent these forums and may check at the end of the day or someone here may have a friend there or something that they could get me in touch with. If you know a better place, I'd love to hear it.

I think your best bet is going to be to sell what you cant bring with you and start fresh wherever it is you're going. Why not U-Haul and get a motorcycle trailer to go with it? That's bound to cost less then 1,500 dollars.

  • musanmanmusanman Registered User regular
ummm I rented my uhaul for like $12/day. I don't believe it costs thousands.

Moving cross country with Uhaul costs substantially more than just around town or to a neighboring city. A quick rate quote on the site says it's $1,801 for the smallest truck (10').

Nope. U-haul motorcycle trailers are in-town only (not one-way) and the cost of gas factors in too at this distance (doesn't get nearly 61MPG). I know all this because, back in 2008, I bought my bike in WV and intended to haul it 600 miles home to GA until I realized that it was adding 50% to the cost of the $3,500 bike. I researched every option I could imagine. This time the distance is much greater and the costs would be even higher. I was only considering it for a 600 mile trip because I had never been on the street with a motorcycle and wanted to learn on safer and familiar streets at home.

In-town is VERY different than 1-way, plus, you aren't considering fuel. In fact, they have or had some silly small-print rule about unlimited mileage being only in the immediately surrounding states from your originating state and then being limited to 50 miles a day beyond that. FedEx seems to be reasonable up to 150lbs before ground shipping stops being an option, so I considered breaking everything up into 100-150lbs packages but I'd still end up selling a lot of weight (spare motorcycle rims, tools, 65" TV is probably over the limit, etc). Less-than-load (LTL) freight services are all ridiculous considering that you load yourself and you don't get it delivered locally and yet there is a HUGE price jump to $1,500+. The whole reason 150lbs+ becomes more expensive with FedEx is because their drivers and workers can't be expected to carry it, but that shouldn't be a problem with LTL because you load and unload it yourself (U-ship, pods, Big Box, etc) and they never touch it. That makes it an even bigger rip-off.

    Bump?

Dude, seriously? I don't know what else you're expecting to hear. Moving is expensive, there isn't much of a way around that.
I would also never use U-Haul again as I've only had shit-tastic luck with them.. I've had great luck with Ryder (though I'm sure it will still be expensive)).

How far have you ridden in a single day? Just riding a motorcycle those distances is going to suck balls. You're talking a couple thousand miles on the bike, if you take the interstates.

If it was me, I'd sell the bike and anything I'm not totally attached to and then either ship or haul what's left back with me.

I think all of your options have been exhausted. Pay for it to get moved, sell your stuff, or somehow go with your plan, which seems to be the answer you are wanting from everyone anyways.

Uhh... I'm not sure what you are tryoing to say. The Comic Con option I'm looking for isn't gone until Comic Con attendees are. When that option is truly gone, I still have every option I had before except that, so I'm going to bump this thread in hopes of finding one this weekend. The only other thing I'm asking is where a better place to ask this question might be.

I rode it 600 miles home from the dealer with only MSF experience and I rode it cross-country to San Diego a few months later. Now a few years later, this is the trip back that I'm discussing. I'm over 24,000 miles on this bike now. It isn't registered in CA and it's not a CA model, so I don't think selling it is a good idea. Also, it'll keep personal transportation and lodging costs WAY down: 61+MPG and it's pretty easy to arrange lodging when touring thanks to the motorcycle community. :) I can sell the TV, PC, tools, etc and will if I don't find a better option. Better those than the motorcycle! ;)

That's the plan/those're the plans. The only other answer I was looking for was a better place to ask regarding Comic Con. I've done plenty of research and consideration in the other options and only thought of this one before posting the thread and starting the search for east coast con-goers who drove.

    Don't bump threads like this.

I don't understand. Why would I not want to bump my own thread while it's still relevant? Are you saying that bumps aren't allowed?

I am saying that posts containing nothing but the word "bump" are not allowed because they are without content, do not add to the thread, and are generally annoying.

Got it. Well, I've cleaned up a bit and have a bit more crap than I thought. I'm going to be repairing a couple PS3s and a Philips AmBX so that I can sell or ship. Anyone locally have an AmBX kit that I can test components with? I'm not sure if it's the wall-washer at fault or the right speaker/controller/light causing it to kick off.
