I'm really happy this thread took a turn to talk about how awesome Unreal World is, because it's the best.
I came across this and thought this thread might appreciate me sharing it:

I bought the alpha of this game. It's really pretty and has a lot of potential, but it's definitely an alpha right now. The new version added random generation for all sorts of cool pretty islands, but 95% of them are impossible to play on and he accidentally removed all of the trees from the game in this version. I'm hoping soon it's awesome though, because it's beautiful and a lot of the systems seem neat.

Well, obviously. Because URW is the best. It's a game that deserves far more recognition than it has, and it's a shame. It fits in the same set of games like Dwarf Fortress, where it's essentially a decades-long continuous development process, trying to model a living world. There's not a whole lot of games like that.

Not to mention that the user interface is a lot more functional, even if it's pretty complex. There's still definitely a learning curve, but if people play it with the mindset that they're in the situation their character is, and they're trying to survive, it's surprisingly easy to get immersed in the game despite the limited graphics.

Apparently Unreal World has gone free, so full versions from 3.16 onwards(at least until the next major version) are going to be free. I'd recommend people to try it if they haven't yet, now that there's no need to buy it. Seems like he got sick of the purchasing model slowing down his update schedule, so he's trying out something different.

This also means release 3.16 is out. Lots of improvements, fixes and additions as always. There is a predator-prey relationship for all of the animals in the game now, species specific dietary requirements, improved pack and herd behaviors, dogs are better in pretty much every way along with tons of other major and minor things.

Here's the full 3.16 change log if you want to take a look.

These releases are always good for getting me back into this for a dozen hours or so. It's these types of long form and open ended games that pretty much guarantees that I'll never see the end of my Steam backlog.

It's starting to get seriously sophisticated. And he's still planning on adding a lot of features.
