@21stCentury Is that your thread on Magical Burst/Persona over on Something Awful? It struck me as too similar to be pure coincidence.

Sorry to re-post a question, but I'd like to know...
is my understanding of American Politics correct?
There's two parties. Republicans, who are all about rich people and hate everything the Democrats do and yell a lot and Democrats, who are all about rich people, sometimes also about not rich people, hate everything the republicans do and generally try not to make too much noise.
Americans have to choose between the two and their platform is pretty much always "What my opponent said, but the opposite".
Also, each vote isn't worth the same because of a guy named Gerry Manders who decided states should vote, not people, so people vote for a state and then the winning party takes all the votes together, therefore erasing those of the losing party.
@21stCentury Is that your thread on Magical Burst/Persona over on Something Awful? It struck me as too similar to be pure coincidence.
No, I'm no longer allowed there because I killed one of their mods in single combat. But I heard about Magical burst in the obscure/horrible RPGs thread.

Huh! That's funny, then, because there is an entire thread dedicated to one guy wanting to hack Magical Burst to be a Persona RPG. How strange!
American politics is pretty bad overall. I watch it as an outsider with a sort of grim fascination. And because more and more traits are starting to show up over here. Geert Wilders is a prime example of a politician with a Republican strategy.
In general, first past the post systems are... not great, and Mr Mandering as you put it makes things worse. Then there's the voter disenfranchising, and the absolutely horrible way the US senate works.
Not quite, Century. There is a significant contingent of Democrats who love Republicans, called Blue Dogs. For the most part, the party doesn't like Republicans but defines itself as being for progress, not just against the other side. The GOP platform tends to be more anti-Democratic.

I was aware of that campaign. I didn't check the notes (if any are posted). All I can say is, we drew the same parallels between the relationship rules for Magical Burst and the S. Links in Persona. But I assure you, my conversion effort is lazy and unrelated to theirs. Plus, it's a system that's light on rules, so practically nothing is changed. Just the genders and ages. (Going to run it as more of a college thing than a high school thing.)
@21stCentury: Us politics are actually more varied than that. We have two parties which is common for almost all first to the pole(first over 51%) systems.
The Democrats aka the big tent- This is the party of Obama though he represents one side, the conservative democrat side. This party includes everything from blue dogs(dems in name) to our super liberals like Dennis Kucinich who want to make a department of peace and make some of the European liberals look like conservative. Many are the middle ground which is right of most Europeans but have a longer history of developing social programs.
Other notable Dems include-Johnson, Kennedy, FDR and Clinton
The Republicans aka The Grand Old Party aka Nut Jobs- Now this party is kind of three parties. The old school republicans. These are super rare now but they are usually conservative but tend to see a use in some public programs. Reagan Republicans, this is like Mr. Ninja Turtle Mitch McConnell, want to dismantle the social programs and work under the impression of trickle down economics. They tend to reduce taxes and cut all but defense. But they have in the past worked with dems for the country, also can be really crazy. Last is the Tea Party, home of Cantor the crazy. These people take a slash and burn response to government. They are the children of the Reagan revolution who took Ayn Rand as a literal path to prosperity. They wish to privatize and dismantle the government. They also see default as nothing bad. They got into the house last election on a very anti-Obama platform.
Problem is lots of our media portrays it with out the nuance. Which hurts our discussions a lot.

Wow, I am on giant explanation rants today. I blame Tarr, he got me into all sort of fun and deep discussions. I am now listening to Metric to change to rest gear before tomorrows super long day of reading.
I'm not sure any american elected official can outleft some of ours. Our Socialistic Party holds about 10% of the House, the Green Party holds 6%, and the Animal Rights Party holds 1.4%.

Read some stuff Kucinich wants he would be up there with Greens. He can be awesome other times, kind of nutty. He also looks like a puppet. I would so vote for him if I could though.
A main problem in US politics is that about 70% of the voters are pretty predetermined D or R, and the 30% that aren't are pretty much not that interested in the first place. So everything has to be soundbited down, made exceeding simple, and has to make the news or it will never reach them. At the same time the bases have to remain fired up, because one of the big ways of losing an election is if your electorate stays home.
So you have politicians saying extreme things to fire the base, and simple things to connect with the independents, and it's basicly ends up as nonsensical and bad analogies.

So here is a thing that I've always wondered about:
Most countries have non-mandantory voting. Down here in Australia, we do. That's never been an issue for me.
But I've seen people on both sides of the "if you don't vote, you don't have a say" argument for non-mandantory countries, and I've always been surprised by the vehemence on the end of the people who seem to be of the opinion that you get a say in the political process regardless of whether you vote or not.
So my question is more along the lines of "what kind of change do people expect when they don't participate in the institutional democratic process", beyond a desire to tear the whole system down
What you are describing is a problem with the basis of our system. When you have a first to the post, I remembered the name, you tend to get only two parties. The lack of voters comes from fatigue though and lack of knowledge. But a lot of it comes from funding and how the system functions. If it was a proportional representation the US would probably be a very different country but it is not.
And all politicians say really stupid things, that is politicians. Though a lot of our current soundbite world comes from a 24 hour news cycle and the repeal of the equal time protections by Reagan in the 1980s(at least I remember it being then). We use to force TV to give equal time to both candidates, now we don't. In many ways this allowed the evolution of Fox News. But that is a whole different can of worms.

Things should just be better, obviously.
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

The Republican Party is a Fox News corporation.
