96 Honda Nighthawk, worth it?

Hey H/A

So, I'm 18, piss poor and spend about 60-80 bucks a week on gas, my car which is pretty suped up gets 15 mpg (partly my fault for chipping it) but I would really like a good gas getter for the summer, since I will be putting around a lot.

My P.E. teacher has a 96 honda nighthawk, its red, and it is pretty cherry. It has 35,000 miles, and get around 70mpg or more. It has a dent on the gas tank, and some of the crome is a little corroded, but I do auto detail so both can be fixed.

He wants 650 for it, is that a fair deal?
I know quite a bit about cars, but when it comes to motorcycles, I don't know a dang thing.

I will also have to take the endorsement class if I want to ride it.

So, is it worth it? Is that a decent price? Any help here would be great?

Oh and btw, I have full leathers if that makes any diffrence.

Thanks!

Ginzue!

Nighthawk 750 or 250? The 750 is a great bike and I'd say worth the price, but the 250... not so much.

Well, I wouldn't buy the 250, but honestly it depends where you'll be riding. It isn't as powerful as some other 250s and struggles a bit to hit 70, which would scare me on the highway. It's got drum brakes. It'd be nice for a city runabout, though.

Edit: Still, that's not a bad price if it's been maintained properly. With 35,000 the cam chain is probably pretty loose, but the rest of the bike should be solid. The little vertical twin is a direct descendant of the 305 in the '59 Honda Dream; so you'd be riding around on 60 years of history. That's kinda cool. If you never go above 60 MPH it'll be quick enough. I'd want new tires on it for $650, but it sounds like you'll make that back in gas expenses pretty fast anyway.

Where's the "yeah, what he said" button?

But also you could probably sell it for what you paid after a year or two.
