Well, my funds from my previous job have almost run out and my school work isn't that bad this semester, so I've decided to get a new job. Anyways, I was thinking about getting something in retail, specifically CompUSA. I've been there a whole bunch of times and I like the atmosphere plus I have a decent knowledge of electronics. My previous job (which was my first real job ever) was at Quizno's Subs and after 9 months, I just couldn't stand it anymore. Food service just isn't for me I guess.
Any general comments, complaints, praise about CompUSA or just retail jobs in general? I'm totally open to other recommendations aside from retail if you guys have any. Keep in mind that I'm a junior in highschool, I'm 17 years old, and live in Madison, WI if it makes any difference. I have transportation, so basically anything is game.
One of the most fun jobs I had was in retail at Wizards of the Coast. If you're working in a retail store with stuff you genuinely like and want to share with others and have the patience to work with the customers who simply aren't going to know about the product you're selling, then you'll definitely enjoy it.
Also, Quiznos is not food service. It's an assembly line. If you want to try actual food service try an actual sit down restaurant. The more casual ones like Chilis or or Bonefish Grill are pretty good jobs and can give some decent experience for a teenager. If it's a particularly successful restaurant then the pay gets to be pretty nice too at times.
I've known several people who have worked at Quiznos and they all say it's miserable there. Also, it really pays to talk to someone who works at a place you're interested in before applying, because some (like movie theatres or blockbuster type places) aren't nearly as awesome as you might think.
Retail isn't great, but it's a hell of a lot better than many other jobs out there. And CompUSA would definitely be one of the better low-end retail jobs to have.
Not that it should be a deciding factor or anything but if it helps I know a guy who works there. He gets stuff at wholesale, or a 10% markup. I forgot. Thats after you have been there more then 3 months I believe.

I worked at a theater and it was as awesome as I thought it would be. I learned how to thread film, see the innerworkings of the film industry, stole cool posters, free buttons and weird swag only the employees get. I put together the displays and often found $ under seats while cleaning the theater.
Unfortunately, my boss was a douche. The job however was great fun, especially if you are a big movie buff.
Also, retail blows...as well as food service. Overnight security is where it is at. You generally get to get all your schoolwork done and you just have to check some monitors every so often...maybe walk around a bit. I just get to watch movies all night.
