Growing Food Upside Down Or Whatever

This is my porch/whatever it is at my new place where I live:

If you have sharp eyes you'll see the little loop in the upper left that I can hang stuff off of. I also have one of those in the upper right. In any case I've heard that I can maybe grow vegetables that hang down. The ground gets a bit of sun each day and eventually I plan to grow stuff there, but I want to start small and also if possible start with the gravity defying stuff because that sounds more complicated.

I tried Googling a bit but I wasn't having much luck. Anyone have experience growing things that hang from the ceiling rather than sit in a garden/pot? What can I grow? Can I even grow anything? Can I grow tomatoes? I like tomatoes.

I'd like to point you to this review of what you're looking for. (TL;DR: don't do it)

That said, I have grown flowers in hanging pots, and they turned out well (and they're sold in hanging pots). Tomatoes grow well in pots, but you'll need bigger ones than those in that picture. You'll probably have to wait until next year to do any of it unless you buy the plants that are already mostly grown, but where's the fun in that?

I tried one of those hanging tomato plants from Lowes, and it did grow, but it seemed to require 2-3 times the watering as my other tomato plant, and it was of the same genus. Could have just been how it was designed though, what with the tiny holes up top rather than being open like the ground standing type.

    Everyone needs a little Chaos!

Yeah I tried the upside down tomato plant twice, with two different apartment patios that each had different levels of sun during the day and neither one even came close to actually growing tomatoes. If you've got a nice patio just get a 12 inch planter and a wire cone and you'll get better results

are YOU on the beer list?

If you want to grow tomatoes and are a novice, grow cherry tomatoes. They are a gabillion times easier, require a smaller amount of space, are frequently harvestable, and overall are just much better for the amateur gardener. Now, if you just want to grow *something* using that hanging space, you could always try some wire strung pots with some basil or other herbs that are pretty much idiot proof (note that I'm not implying anything about your l33t gardenin' skillz, just noting the ease of use factor!).

I'm all about ease, and really my goal is just to expand the usable space and have some bitchin' hanging plants. Herbs sound pretty good and I didn't really think about that fact that I can grow not-heavy stuff like herbs right side up if I just string the pots up. I think I'll go with that. Thanks everyone!
