I did a few searches and came up nill so I thought it might be safe to ask because I know a lot of people around here were really into tribes at one time or another.
I recently uncovered a copy of tribes 2 that I bought and played for exactly two days after it launched and immediately put away never to be seen again. Finding this game got me all hyped up to play tribes again. I did a little research on the net to see if people were actually still playing it, and they are. I also found out that they have released the first one as a free game download. So far every site that I have come across, the game is not there anymore, or if I actually get it and download it, it is already corrupted.
Does anyone know where a legit place is that has the game, and maybe even some of the basic scripts like skiing and what not?
Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, I have the second one. I made the mistake of buying that one on launch. The one I really want to get a hold of is the first one, Starsiege Tribes. Like I said though, it has proved futile thus far as every copy I have managed to locate is either no longer up or corrupted when I do manage to download it.
I don't have the time right now, as I'm on campus and I have a lot to do today, but later this evening, I would be up for either Tribes 1 or 2. I really miss being able to find games of T2 renegades (not Ultra renegades). I was an awesome base defender, and I was pretty ok with a sniper rifle too.
Why didn't anyone like that game? I don't get it. There's no good goddamn reason why all the multiplayer servers were empty after a week.
It was an okay game. But it's not Tribes. Also, Vivendi was disappointed by its sales and dropped all future support not long after its launch, so it was doomed from the start.
I also hated how they stripped out almost anything that was complex in Vengeance. You went from having a command circuit, a slew of weapons and defensive deploys, and huge maps, to having no command circuit, the ability to carry a max of (3?) weapons, small, sometimes completely enclosed maps, and mines the size of economy cars.
The grappling hook was the only thing I felt to be a worthwhile addition, and they even screwed up on the best part of that; it had limited ammo and you couldn't use it while having another weapon equipped.
Also, I believe I've got the file to patch v1.8 (I think that's the version you get free) to v1.11 (most recent). I had a hard time finding it when I first downloaded it, so I thought I'd share.
Edit: Er, but my hosting isn't allowing me to upload a 5 MB file right now for some reason. I'll figure something out later, if anyone's interested.

This is the primary reason I didn't buy it. The demo froze up on my computer, and I didn't want to buy a full version that wasn't going to get official patches.
I preferred to park a shrike underwater, then drop a beacon under it (so I could find my way back). I'd fly up to the enemy flag, which was always VERY heavily defended, then just drop back down into the water. The water would prevent any missile locks, and anybody chasing me would then be bogged down as I sped away in my vehicle. Because there's no other way to get a shrike anywhere near the enemy base without it getting shot down by missiles, this worked very well, and because I wasn't doing any skiing, it left me free to choose whichever pack was most convenient (sensor jammer would probably be best).

If this is the map I think it is, I would frequently farm spike turrets in the water under the flag. Usually there would only be one flag attempt at a time, and you moved so slow under water that the turrets would get you before you could blow them up. Mines were usually a good addition to the outer perimeter of the spike turret patch. Funny thing; if a shrike went low overhead, all of the turrets would come to life and follow the shrike with their heads, making me think of flowers looking at the sun.

As long as you get some of the basic scripts for the game you should be good. Remember, tribes by itself was a slow paced type game where you could not ski like in tribes 2. You have to get the script to be able to ski and do basically all the fun stuff you like about t2.

Or you can just mash the jump button...
You got the flag your flying from the tower in rain dance and you have three chasers on you. Try hitting the jump button a million times while maintaining your composure and cap route.

The only thing really missing was punkbuster support, and that doesn't really matter since everyone that still plays is legit.
Personally T:V is my fav online team game, it's a real shame people just dismissed it.

What was missing was the soul of Tribes. They stripped it down to a deathmatch game with jetpacks. The maps were far too small(but still huge filesizes because they weren't dynamically generated), there were no real bases, vehicles were map spawns, and skiing was easy to the point that even a heavy could travel between bases in seconds. The entire dynamic of the game was changed in Vengeance.
yeah Tribes: Vengeance simply wasn't a tribes game. Vivendi cut out everything that was good about it and just turned it into a generic shooter, but with jetpacks.
I believe in Tribes 1 all that was necessary to ski wasn't mashing the jump button, but instead timing your jumps so that you would basically bounce when you hit the ground. You could get so much speed going down a hill this way that you could sail up the next hill without even hitting your jets. On some of the mods that allowed speed boosters, a well-placed boost at the bottom of a hill after skiing could send you flying forever.

Yeah, mashing doesn't really do it. Timing is everything - you can frickin' fly across Raindance if you know where to plant your jumps.
All the skiing script in Tribes 1 does is spam the jump button for you.

Tribes, oh how I miss ye.
Yeah, you just have to jump again when you hit the ground. Which happens like every split second as you approach the bottom of the hill.

You can get just about anything you want there, and extras you don't even know exist. It's also where the best players are.
I own Tribes Vengeance.

Because the game sucked. It was not tribes at all. Furthermore the Unreal Engine just blew goats ass for it. It's to long of an issue to point out every massive failure. But think about it this way. The tribes 1 crowd didn't get along with the tribes 2 crowd because they thought the game perverted tribes, yet both communities agreed that tribes V blew ass.
Tribes 1 is still active, and IMHO is the best of the series, you can still find servers with players.

Fanbases tend to be a superstitious, retarded lot.
I still have nightmares about the shitstorm that happened when it was revealed that Thief 3 wouldn't boot you out of the game, delete your save file, and then melt the CD if you killed a guard.
I wasted so much of my college freshman year playing T2. I remember being really irritated when a patch drastically lowered the level ceilings, because I couldn't fly a bomber out of sight of the ground anymore.

Found a place to get the whole damn file with a bunch of maps and scripts already in place. Some of the skins in it are gay and it is missing a couple things that I feel are very necessary for the game, but other than that it is the whole things.

You can get tribes 2 free here. Incase you want to make this a game on.

The second one is a free download, but CD keys for accounts were given out on a limited time basis and they've been gone for some time.

The single-player was ok, though.

If you want a little more fun, google Tribes RPG mod as well. It's a bit of a learning curve, but it's excellent.

Why!?
Flying underwater in Archipelago in T2 was fun
I loved T2...
Game on?
Panama Jack scripts FTW!

32 bit textures for the win.
Must get.

Mostly because of the grappler.
I played the motherfucking shit out of Tribes 2, though, and I made a lot of skins for it that a lot of people still use.
