Most of my fond memories comes from obsessively playing Quake Arena at a friend's house, but old school FPS multiplayer in all its forms is a thing I love. So if someone proposes an event or something, I'll be there.
I might avoid team stuff though. I'm having trouble with my ISP that might occasionally cause deaths, so unless it's ultra casual, I don't want to be a liability.
Over the years I played warsow, the only complaint I've heard other players make is that you're making is that movement is dominant, and that was mostly from VQ3 / QL players.
And I sat in the community's IRC channel in its dying days here, which was people basically bitching about how it is a shit game and they'd go back to CPMA if it had a community (they're back playing CPMA now and I guess I'm sort of there sometimes)
I feel the view on movement is mostly personal preference. Movement being a massive skill on its own is sort of the selling point of the game. The game is about trick jumping.
The opposite of your weapon complaints were pretty common. Rockets are too good in most situations due to the ease with which you can juggle people compared with other quake games and that plasma gives far too much area denial because of how powerful it can be were pretty common, it isn't really there to kill people so much as it is to stop people +forwarding you to death and area denial. It was a much stronger weapon before, and was toned back with reason.
I remember the last time I was playing Warsow seriously the rl was a big letdown. The splash radius was terrible. The weapons were too weak in general, making it feasible for most players to simply turn and run for it if any confrontation started to go south for them. Even if you could chase, hitting them became so much more difficult, and you lost positioning and everything else. Rockets needed to be buffed: rockets should be the strongest weapon in the game.
I love the movement, and I don't mind that it's dominant in play, but I think it's too strong within individual encounters, making positioning feel less important, and letting players get away with shit they never should have.
For general defrag and the occasional CA nonsense, though, Warsow is wonderful. I don't like to duel anyway, so that's not a big deal to me.
It's also possible that all this stuff has been addressed since I last played; it's been a while.
The most criminally under appreciated mod has got to be cctf. Threewave cctf was the most fun I ever had with that mod, and I played ctfs competitively. Too bad cctf was too difficult for most, and took too much team work. But a good grapple monkey could make Warsow movement look tame.
That'd be why we're not seeing eye to eye.
Duel is what the game is made for, if you buffed the RL duel and the PG it would make duel a joke.
If you're on par with someone else's movement, you can stop them getting away with dumb shit because you should be able to follow them and if they're trail blazing as fast as they can their line will be pretty predictable allowing you to land a hit. If not you should catch them.
There were people who essentially played the warsow version of defrag, used the newer movement system (far better cornering, introduced in 0.4 I believe), aimed better than me and I could still beat them 80% of the time.
You just need to play smart instead of hard.

Casual is the goal, as far as I'm concerned. I just want to get together with some PA people, play some rounds of something Quake-related, and maybe have a few laughs and cry at how awful I am. Depending on interest, I wouldn't mind getting something together as early as maybe Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. Though I think the weekend would be convenient for most everyone else.
This is what needs to be said about Quake 1 single player.
I get so dizzy watching those videos. Impressive, certainly, but serious nausea starts setting in if I watch them for too long. The Quake II versions are pretty cool to watch as well, but not are arguably not quite as impressive. They seem less hectic and there's a lot less bunnyhopping going on.
I downloaded gloom but never really got to play it.
And the reason that q2 done quick isn't as impressive is it doesn't have nearly as much aircontrol as QW, or speed that you can get from rockets.
The best rocket launchers are in QW, CPMA and Q2. In that order.
Q2 for the bulldozer rockets, CPMA for well timed and massive bounce QW for erratic bounce and awesome speed you can get from rocket jumping.
I really don't like the VQ3 / QL RLs and wasn't big into Quake 4. Everyone bitches about Quake 4, but VQ3 was worse. There is a reason CPM physics became the norm for a while, going back to VQ3 physics is such a crock of shit.
http://www.wireheadstudios.org/generations/ Generations mod for Quake 3. Basicly it gives you classes based off of all of ID softwars big shooters, complete with most of their respective weapons, where you battle in an insane free for all. I think it should be added to the OP
Well hell yeah, if this group starts hosting events of hot quad-damaged goodness I am definetly in. Many of ID softwares classics is where I really cut my teeth in terms of gaming. Hell, I remember deeming it an achivment of beating Quake 2 on Hard. Of course mind you, its really not that difficult. Q2s AI is dumber then rocks, And combine it with what I only hope to be rather alien movement concepts at the time of the game release (bunnyhopping, Circlestrafing and rocketjumping in particular) still doesnt make it too much of a challenge. Infact, A rather amusing secret simply involves rocket jumping over a single, obvious platform which apparently ID thought they hid so well they give you the message of You crazy rocketjumpers you!
So yeah, in the meantime I am going to look for my old CDs of this crap
I've always wondered how people would approach defrag if it was a stand-alone game marketed as a fps puzzle/platformer. Would it at least get the cult status of Mirror's Edge, or would the general principles be too obtuse?

i think there could be some way to make it not obtuse if you had a really good tutorial and stuff
making a whole game out of it, i don't know
but i think you could make defrag something like mirror's edge
People love the shit out of defrag, and it's huge amounts of fun. But those are only the people who know about it. It's a mod for a mod for a decade old game and has no marketing. I think it could support a full "game," since it already does have more content than most commercial games do.
Of course, this is never going to happen. But a few people that I've shown defrag to, and who know nothing about Quake, thought it would make a great stand-alone game.
And there's the obvious problem that it doesn't work on consoles.
Some of the Mirror's Edge dlc is basically simplified defrag anyway. I think people liked it.
I have to say, I'm really quite impressed with Scourge of Armagon. I've always been...apprehensive, I suppose...of mission pack addons not made by the developer themselves, but the guys behind SoA did a splendid job with these levels. I really liked the continued focus on marines levels for the first few. I always wanted to spend more time fighting them in Quake than what we get. I'm not sure what was prevalent in the map scene at the time, but I have to say I'm quite impressed with the breakaway objects and scripted events. I don't recall any, or much, of that stuff being prevalent in Quake; or at least, not to the extent that they are in here. The new weapons are pretty great as well. I love the blaster. Roboscorpions can suck a rocket, though.
As for a play time, I'm thinking Tuesday evening (9pm ET, maybe). My brain is about fried and will be completely melted after the GRE's tomorrow, so I'll need a day to recover before I can spend some time clearing my thoughts. I'll hang out in the Steam group chat in the mean time, where hopefully we can start getting games going. I've never dueled before, but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot if that's what we have the numbers for.
I've also started the process of giving in and installing Q3A. Currently using ioQuake and the PRO Installer for content, but I'm also perfectly willing to play over Quake Live as well. If you have an account there shoot me a PM as I've started keeping a list of forumers and their QL usernames.

I love Mega TF. The original TF is pretty cool. There's something kinda natural about the way Quake I's multiplayer plays, I really like it. No other game plays as well as that, to me. No ducking, jumping, very fast paced, cover system composed of strafing around a corner, etc.
One thing I loved about Q2's multiplayer is No Item Quake. It's a game of pure skill and no pickups. It also makes the single player a bit more fun as you get whatever item you get. And it's a server side mod, so you don't have to install tons of stupid shit all over the place. I can't find a link for it, and I don't want to go through planetquake to find it, but I'm sure it's still out there somewhere. It's like a 500k .dll, awesome.
No, I appreciate the help. I kept trying to figure it out and just said "fuck it" and copy-pastaed it from the end of the PM. The link worked as I had it, but your suggestion makes it look better.
It seems we have enough people interested to get at least a small game together tomorrow. I probably should have been more clear before, but I was hoping to play Quake 1 tomorrow. If anyone has objections please let me know, otherwise I'll track down a decent server that appears to be empty and will post details here and in the Steam group.
Sorry about that Bullio. I had a conversation with other people where we determined that the one way doesn't notify me, and I just assumed without testing the link that meant the whole thing was broken. I tested it after I made the post and realized I was wrong. Obviously notification is not the point at all. I'm really not trying to be a nitpicker.
Concerning Quake: I know I said I'd available at 9 PM Eastern, but I forgot I have an appointment tomorrow. In general that time is great for me, but this Tuesday is rough. If you guys are still playing, I'll be glad to join in around 10:30.
What will I need besides Quake? Any particular maps or mods?
Theoretically, you don't need anything except Quake. A source port will make the game look and function better, but any custom maps, mods, or files on the server should download automatically from the server. However, the game might only do this with a source port, so you may need one anyway. Check the OP for source ports. I'd recommend either DP or nQuake depending on how you want the game to look (though you can install really pretty texture packs to make Darkplaces look as good, if not better than, nQuake).
If it comes down to it, I'd be good with some 1 on 1 action if you want. I'm hoping we'll get a decent turnout for more fun, though.
I don't have much Q1 experience or a copy of the game (therefore no vanilla maps), but I installed nQuake. So I could play on the custom maps included it (aerowalk, ztndm3/4, long list of others).
nQuake doesn't actually include any game data files, specifically the pak0.pak file. Source ports like nQuake just make the game play nicer on modern OS's. To get the .pak files, you need to have a copy of Quake.
Probably FFA DM to start due to player number requirements (or lack thereof). I'd love to move on to something like CTF or Team Fortress if enough people show up.
@TelMarine, I'm not finding you on Steam. If you're not in the Steam group linked in the OP, join up!

Ah, I remember the days of youth, playing Quake on a 56k modem with a good friend of mine. There was surprisingly little lag as he lived just a few miles away. I can remember playing on Claustrophobopolis and I had managed to catch him in a massive lava trap, so I started firing rockets at where I thought he was and managed to kill him before the lava did.
Actually, if I can get Quake onto a thumb drive I might be able to play with you guys from work tomorrow. No promises though, we'll just see how things work out. :bz

Actually, so much of the data has been replaced with higher quality community remakes that it's a complete package playable without an original copy - just missing the original id maps.
I found some servers that appear suitable for tomorrow's activities. The default server we'll meet on is QW.QuakePhil.com FFA (69.31.82.226:27501). In case there are any issues with this server, the backup is Quake-Legion.net [FFA] (63.251.20.251:27500). Both of these servers are 8 player QuakeWorld FFA DM servers. I tried finding one that had more than 8 players for the backup, but couldn't find any that weren't password protected and had decent ping .
Also, @IdolNinja has kindly offered to host a dedicated server for PA Quake night(s) should this become a regular event. Obviously this offer is appreciated, and would be very helpful for centralizing everyone into one server for jumping in and out of.
EDIT: Alright, since it seems almost no one can actually make 9PM, I've changed the time for 10:30PM ET. All other info is the same.

Just a reminder, homps and hompettes. Tonight is Quake 1 night. Get your chosen source port installed and be ready to frag (and be fragged) at 10:30 Eastern.
How the hell do you quit the game? Haha... I tried going to quit, but it doesn't do anything. I type "exit" in the prompt and nothing... The screen is all jumbled from me alt+tabbing it. I can't even find it in task manager.
