I have the option to search for DarkPlaces games and QuakeWorld games. Neither of those lists include "QW.QuakePhil.com FFA"
Windows Firewall is not blocking connections for DarkPlaces.
First hour report: definitely fun. Although if we never played that one huge map (DM3?) again I wouldn't miss it. The weapon placement is so sparse that a huge portion of fights were SG vs. SG or SG vs. NG. Not very interesting although some people may have had different experiences.
It took me until halfway through the second time we played it to realize where the LG and mega health were on DM6. It was probably the most fun map overall though, especially for the number of players we had.
I didn't do an exact count for the later games, but the server was either full or damn near full for every game after the second or third. That may explain the connection issues. Also, with Darkplaces there's a box towards the top that you need to enter port info in. Were you typing all of the info in the IP box, or just the IP in the IP box and the port in the port box?
QuakeWorld isn't a mod; it's the base online client for getting online with Quake. I've been playing using Darkplaces and haven't had any problems.
Also, some of you people are too fucking good. Or my total inexperience is showing. I'm leaning towards a mix of both. The map with the lava pits is horrible for my frag count. I don't think I've had a positive score on it yet.

Good times for the short period I got to play. Coming in off of Star Wars Battlefront II was a shocking change of pace. Then I had to stop for my son's bedtime. When I jumped back in, the server was full, and it seemed like a lot of players weren't PA. Spectated a bit and logged out. I'm definitely down for more of this in the future.
It was good getting fragged by you again Tel. Yeah, let's do this some more guys.
I installed Quake from a CD and didn't have a QW directory, so I went to Quakeworld's site, found a bunch of broken links, and ended up downloading ezQuake.
Had an absolutely fantastic time tonight. Thank you to everyone that showed up and made this night a much bigger success than I was expecting. There were definitely some non-PA people in there, especially towards the last couple matches, but that's one of the perils of playing on a public server. If @IdolNinja wants to host us a server for next week, he's encouraged to do so ;-).
Complaints over the map rotation are noted, but unfortunately there's no easy way that I know of to determine a server's map rotation. I believe I've found a replacement which has a capacity of 10 players. Ping isn't as good for me as tonight's server, but should still be plenty playable (don't know how much a ping of 100-120 affects Quake). If people want to help me test out the map rotation tomorrow, and/or can tell me a way to easily figure out a server's map rotation, the address is 166.70.135.178:27500 (Fragbait Quakeworld Server). The server also has a list of commands that lets you view available maps, which would make deciding on and voting for maps not in the rotation easier. The only problem is that I'm not sure if this is a 24/7 dedicated server. Unfortunately it seems the backup server wasn't, but thankfully we really didn't need it. If it isn't, I'll find a new server closer to the next play date for us to play on.
Tonight seemed like a good match of day and time for people, so if people are alright with it I'm voting to establish this as our default day of the week and time to play. But like I mentioned, I'll be testing out the above server tomorrow so if people want to help me do so by all means feel free to stop by. I'll start playing at 10:30PM ET. I will also probably try to throw together matches in between for those interested (1 on 1 is fine with me), but Tuesdays at 10:30PM ET will be the established date that people interested in playing should try to make if they can only play during one night. I'm also thinking of keeping it FFA DM for now, but if there's a strong consensus to play a certain mod or Quake II or something, then I'll find us a place to play. I think that's getting ahead of myself for now though, so we'll keep it simple with the same day/time and game mode.
EDIT: Also, if people are trying to play Quake (especially online) with the old original version of the game, this is strongly discouraged and is not worth the hassle to get working. Download a source port and use that instead. There are a few recommendations in the OP, but there are way more than those out there. You shouldn't have any issues finding one to your liking, and they're very easy to install (usually just unzip it to the root of your Quake folder).
Bump to remind people I'll be on the server in the OP in about an hour.
Also, the backup server from last night (Quake-Legion.net FFA) is now back on the server browser and appears to have increased capacity from 8 to 10. I have no idea what the map rotation is like for it, but the times I've checked it out it was on 2 completely different maps than any of the ones that we were playing on last night. Unfortunately, not knowing the map rotation is appearing as one of the downsides of finding a public server to play on. Hopefully we'll be able to get a private server for at least Tuesdays, which in theory should solve the map rotation issues and will allow us to change it up as necessary, but in the meantime dealing with potentially non-ideal map rotations is something we'll have to deal with. At least having two servers, a default and backup, theoretically gives us some wiggle room when one server's rotation becomes stale. Which brings me back to the need to test out the server I'm testing tonight, and my desire to have people on it with me to help me pass the time.
I have some questions for anyone who has had experience with setting up a dedicated Quake server on a Windows box. Rather than clutter up the thread, add me on Steam to discuss.
i've been waiting for a decent arena fps to come out since unreal 2k4. never really played the first quake, or 2 that much... i think we rented it on n64 once =P
i'm sad i missed the tf2 rocket launcher promo, but ive played q4 enough i think. so... quake 1... and ezquake, is that all you really need? or are there some more mods needed?
also, is the quake collection on steam considered the bundle to get for this?

The TF2 promo launcher is available for purchase from the Mann Co. store for $2, so if you want it enjoy your $18 discount.
Quake + ezQuake (or nQuake, which is ezQuake with prepackaged content) is probably the simplest way to get online with little fuss.
Quake collection on Steam is a decent bundle despite not having Quake 4 included, but if you don't have the Doom and Wolfenstein games then I suggest waiting for a big Steam sale like the summer or winter sale and grabbing the id Superpack. It's usually between $30-35 and contains the entire pre-Quake 4 d catalog, and will probably include Quake 4 now that it's been added to Steam.
is all i need vanilla quake then? i want to say i might have it floating around somewhere... did quake 4 originally come with 1 and 2? i seem to remember quake 2 with it, but not 1... might have to dig around for a disc.

Yes, though I'd consider a source port to be essential as well. ezQuake (nQuake) will work just fine. I don't know about the packaging stuff. I bought the Ultimate Quake pack years ago that had Quake 1-3 in a single retail box. I believe the 360 version of Quake 4 came bundled with a port of Quake II. Perhaps you're thinking of that?
RSP has offered to host a server for us for Tuesday, and I believe we have found a solid 5 map rotation of tight, fast maps that people will thoroughly enjoy. Shit will get insane quick on Tuesday and won't let up.
ztndm4
ztndm3
spinev2
ztndm6
aerowalk (I know it's a duel map, but it'd be fine with 3 players too, and we can always just skip it if the server's too populated)
All of these are custom maps, but they also all come with nQuake. I might also throw in q3dm6qw to break up the ZTN monopoly and because I know we've got people who know and love q3dm6.
Time limit will be 10 minutes per map, powerups on, no frag limit.
Anyway, I'm no expert on Quake 1/QuakeWorld maps or gameplay so if anyone has other suggestions or comments, by all means speak up.
Quake is so fast! I think I know why Rocket Arena was invented. After losing for a while I thought "Why do I even bother spawning without a rocket launcher?"
Since I haven't heard any input otherwise, Tuesdays at 10:30PM ET will be the designated Quake night. So if you want to play Quake 1, and can only make it once a week, this is the date to make.
The PA server is in place, info is in OP. This is not a 24/7 dedicated server, but it will be up for our weekly Tuesday night meetings. You'll have to directly connect to the server (open console, type "connect <ip:port>" without the quotes) as it will be hidden from the master server list to avoid pubbies from joining. Kudos to RSP for hosting us!
The rotation for this week is in the OP, but if we get too many people for Aerowalk this Tuesday then we'll replace it with DM6. This map will be familiar to people that played last Tuesday (it's the map that wasn't the big one or the one with lava).
RSP also had an idea that I like for each week's map rotation, but I'd like input on it before committing to it. After playing each Tuesday, people will vote for the 2 maps they liked most in that night's rotation. The 3 with the least amount of votes will be replaced in the rotation the following week with new maps. This will ensure that we're playing on maps that people approve of while allowing the addition of new maps to keep each week fresh. However, if people don't like this idea and simply want a predetermined map rotation left completely to my own judgement (though hopefully with input from others), then I'm alright with picking out maps each week for us to play on. I leave the decision up to all of you.
Bullio, is this all sorted or do you still need me to setup a Quake server on our box?
I believe everything is in place for Tuesdays. I personally would love to have a 24/7 dedicated server for people to jump into for impromptu matches (I'd be more likely to host such events with a dedicated), but I'm honestly not sure how much interest there is in having such a server and if the effort of maintaining it is worth it. I'd also like to have a backup on the off chance that something happens to RSP's server on Tuesdays, but I can always search for an empty in a pinch if we need somewhere to play.
So in short, we're set unless you want to host a dedicated and it's not too much of a drain on you.
A dedicated box would definitely be nice, and I can help you out with the setup - the documentation available isn't exactly great.
My server is set up to record demos of every game played, and I think I've got the process of encoding videos from demos worked out. So I could do a 'clip of the week' type thing if people tell me the map and approximate time that they pull off crazy stuff.
Here's my test clip encoded from a clientside demo I made during our first set of games on Saturday. Apologies to Silas .
I've been practicing bunny hopping but my muscles just seem completely uncooperative. I tried looking for a bunny hopping practice map, like something that is basically one massively long straight hallway, but couldn't find anything. The closest I could find was E4M3, but as soon as I start to feel like the rhythm is working for me I hit a wall or something and get fucked over. I'm going to keep working at it, but I think it's just something that's not going to work out.

Man. Darkplaces is... dark.
It's easy to forget how dark the multiplayer levels are after playing with ezQuake.
I do prefer Darkplaces for singleplayer stuff though, now that I've tried it out.

Yeah, I've been using DP for multi and the vast majority of my deaths are due to not seeing who the fuck is shooting at me. I tried switching to flares for lighting and it didn't really help. I'm going to try ezQuake for multi Tuesday and see how well it works. I really like the high-res texture pack and it's one of the most faithful-to-the-original texture packs I've seen for any game, but the original graphics are a fairly big part of what makes Quake "Quake" in my mind. That's why I'm thinking DP will be my SP source port while ezQuake is my MP source port.

Oh, and put a link to your Steam profile somewhere or just join the public group in the OP @TelMarine, you're seriously unfindable on Steam.
