Hey, I'm currently submitting my resume to the career sites for major companies. A cover letter is required, but the problem is I don't know who specifically I'm submitting the form to. In normal cover letters I would be addressing the letter to someone within the company, but in this instance I am submitting it to a company's career page on their website. Do I try to investigate as to who I'm specifically writing to or leave out that section entirely?
If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten in your presence.

"To Whom It May Concern" if you can't dig up a specific name.
A cover letter is a chance to introduce yourself and demonstrate some personality. It is less about who *within* the company you are writing to and more about the tone and culture of the company instead.
You can address the letter generically, just make sure the content is appropriate to the industry and company.

EDIT: http://jobsearch.about.com/od/coverlettertips/a/how-to-address-cover-letter.htm has "Dear Hiring Manager" slightly above my suggestion, but I think it sounds weird.

Attn: Hiring Manager, or
Attn: Human Resources Manager.
All I can think about when I see that is "Greetings, Earthlings"
