Meeting a game halfway is not always just grinding through boring parts.
In God Hand it was learning that while the game was brutally hard it was fair, my god was it fair, and my hands and reflexes had to be trained to tap into that brillisnt fighting engine.
In the first Assassins Creed it wad turning off the game's entire HUD.

This is the kind of meeting halfway I enjoy. I've played games that challenged me, games that I swore I could never beat but still went for that "one more round" until I tightened my reactions, or my understanding of the mechanics, or both. I came out feeling like a champion and being really glad I stuck it out.

I mean, as someone who gave up on Deus Ex more than a few times, I get why people stop playing it, but it still saddens me much like the "Yeah, I stopped playing Mass Effect halfway through the Citadel because fuck that boring shit" folks do.

yeah, I mean, it can be a lot of things. Sometimes it's as simple (or as complicated!) as getting into the appropriate headspace to appreciate it. As with movies or books or songs, there are plenty of games that I think are terrific but that I absolutely have to be in the right mood to be able to enjoy.
I liked ME (I think I did, anyway...). I remember a lot of running around on that gigantic platform in the Citadel and all the side doors and relaying messages and shit. I just like... I dunno, maybe I played that game mostly at night.
ME 2 might have been my favorite video game ever, though.

I just have a hard time taking it on faith that a game will get so much better. I mean, yeah, the Citadel was really fucking boring. I have no idea how I powered through that, because at that point I was pretty certain the game was going to be boring schlock.
I know this is going to sound incredibly nerdy but...
One of the things I have done to get into the correct headspace for a game decenrly frequently is to only run when it made sense, and otherwise walk. I walked through most of half life 2, assassins creed and other titles. You notice so much more of the world.

I do that with RPGs sometimes... Having it be a choice, in can be enjoyable.
Allegedly a voice of reason.

Also, for me personally, Deus Ex had the best story in games until Mass Effect came along. In the past three or four years the list of games with stories that I consider really worthwhile has ballooned quite a bit (Alpha Protocol, Assassin's Creed, Fallout, etc.) but DX is still very much up there in terms of the confidence with which it deploys its themes. In 2000, and for years and years afterwards, it didn't really feel like anything else out there.
I like to go through FPSs (at least, when it comes to urban, mostly indoor settings) with pistol only. Not for like, the difficulty factor, I guess. I just like the imagery. It seems more visceral and tense. It is lame, though, that in a lot of FPSs, once rifles and shotguns become prevalent it's hard to find more pistol ammunition.
AC and AC2 I spent a lot of time not even walking but just slowly panning around while I eye-fucked the beautiful everything. Even the most pointless dead end alleyway has a huge amount of detail and effort put into it.

I actually know what you mean. Specifically with Assassin's Creed - I love just walking through those worlds and taking in the sights and sounds.
(Plus, since you spend like half the game on the roofs, moving around the streets is kind of a different, novel experience.)

A funny thing.
I saw a picture of a tea-party rally. And one guy in particular had a huge sign, with a lot of the common slogans on it. He also had this image:

Maybe I'll try that new texture mod. Part of me feels like I'd be missing out on some of the original game, but it's not exactly a part of the game I'm crazy about.

I know a game is great when I start talking to it. I mean right now I am going through Bloodlines. I start mumbling like my Malk when I am wandering around. I get really into it. Even with the shitty combat.
Dragon Age 1 and 2 both did this to me as well. I would read the lines in 1 out loud so I was my own VA. I would grunt or reply without thinking about it to some of my companions when they said things, if I wasn't just laughing. The mass effect games though I love ME2 to death I don't do this. I think its a loss.
In fact, I bet if someone watched me play a single player game they would think I was crazy.
Anyway when will the people who make Call of Duty make a CCW simulator where you have to jump out of bed and shoot a crazed guy on PCP who breaks into your home to fuck your wife's face?
Home Defense: Defend Harder
This sounds perfect.

I also saw the movie Paul yesterday, and it was awesome.

it doesn't really change anything that makes the game great, so don't feel bad about it!
Oh man, AC2 I just sit on a bench at times and watch the world. I climb as high as possible just to view the world. That game is one of the games that has actually had me just sit for a few minutes looking over the cities. So much fun.

The textures are basically just really nice higher-res versions of the original stuff. I am not a big mod guy in general precisely because I'm usually more interested in the game maker's vision than in random player #22471's, but this one really does make the environments a lot more pleasant to be in and it is, so far as I can tell, completely faithful to the original.

Oh no. It was your wife with a glass of water. What have you done.
Suggest something to do that isn't reading or playing WoW or Starcraft or buying things
Play civ 5. I am a whore and got the new dlc. I am playing the new scenario. Its fun playing a game that sits mostly in the classical age for battle and such. Really changes the power of barbarians and such.

Shouldn't it really be a simulator where you write a bunch of scenarios in message boards about all the sorts of situations where it would come in handy? And you have to write a bunch of essays about how guns are no different than any tools. And then you have to walk around for hours and never use it.

Someone around here has to pretend like they have self confidence, and it sure as shootin' ain't gonna be me. *spits*
I don't know why I started talking like a sterotypical Texan just then. That was weird.
I wasn't really suggesting the two were analogous except inasmuch as they both require some meeting halfway

And, don't worry, I'm self-confident as fuck. :P
My current girl has labeled my self confidence as "amazingly attractive."

So I'm conceding the point, I guess? I'll see, but I'm pretty doubtful.
I'll never have the same desire with LoL, though.
