Clicking the RSS button takes me back to the front page instead of to the RSS feed.
Also,
A parsing error was encountered.
I'm using the http://feeds.penny-arcade.com/pa-mainsite link.

UPDATE 2011-08-22:
New URL is http://penny-arcade.com/feed.

UPDATE 2011-09-07:
Per @kethenn it's all good now.

Just came here to say the same thing. Tried various RSS button's scattered around and they all behave the same way. Also, is the RSS a different feed entirely than the old one because my old one isn't updating with the new stuff either.

    Yeah, I'm wondering this, too.

Also, wondering why I am not seeing the new comic at all, or the new site design? I think Robert said that it should be up now? Am I hitting an un-updated CDN cache or something?

There is indeed a new Comic and the new site is Up and live.

Yeah... the RSS feed for the main site appears to just to reflect the HTML from the regular www site.

The URL has changed over the years but the one I posted is the one that I have been using for quite a while. It appears to be the same one currently linked from the new main page.

After Gabe's tweet I get the new site design now. Curious to see if I'll see the RSS items pop up as well, or if it won't work 'til Weds. Sometimes Google Reader is weird like that for me.

  • Banzai5150Banzai5150 Registered User regular
Thinking that it was using a different feed, I went and deleted my old feed so I can't compare :(

The RSS feed link just redirects you to the actual HTML page. That's why you're getting a parsing error. The old RSS URL (http://www.penny-arcade.com/rss.xml) also redirects to the new site as well, so same issue. There appears to simply be no RSS feed at all right now.

signed up to say the RSS is broken, encountered wondrous errors while trying to create an account.

I guess i'll post about that somewhere else

  • FandeathisFandeathis Registered User regular
Yes, the RSS feed is indeed broken right now. As someone who uses Google Reader for everything, it felt weird having to visit the main page again haha.

Not quite. I updated my URL and am now getting updates for new comics/news posts but their links are all wrong.

The news post links all go to the current news page. Example: the link for "The Price of Free" (2011-08-17) in the RSS feed is http://penny-arcade.com/news/the-price-of-free. This leads to the current front page, with "Territory" (2011-08-19) as the top news post. The link should probably be http://penny-arcade.com/2011/08/17/the-price-of-free.

Also, today's comic "The Eastern Front" links to http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/08/19, which is "Territory" from last Friday.

    OP updated with new URL.

  • antheremantherem Registered User regular
Also, it seems like whenever there's a news post, I'm getting the entire RSS feed as new articles again, instead of just the news post.

  • agilemaniaagilemania Lyon EstatesRegistered User regular
I'm seeing the same thing. After the articles updated again (all 8 of them), the 5 news post articles still linked to the current front page. The 3 comic articles had changed so that they all pointed to today's comic (2011-08-22) instead of Friday's (2011-08-19).

This appears to be an issue with the feed itself. The date values show as the wrong format and GUID values are non-unique: http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http://www.penny-arcade.com/feed

  • bobrobertbobbobrobertbob Registered User new member
This is still broken, whatever is generating the feed need some attention. Previous items become 'new' with every update.

The rest of the site is slick though, so nice work on that.

Even when NOTHING changes you still get like 10 updates from the Penny Arcade RSS feed. Please fix it, it's so annoying I'm contemplating just removing the feed.

  • stereoworldstereoworld Registered User new member
Yup same here. I use Google Reader.

I click on "Comic: Fix Your Shit" and that takes me right to the latest comic.

Also, the GUID of _every_ entry in the feed is prefixed by "/2011/08/29/", even though their actual dates range from the 24th to the 30th. I'd speculate that this prefix is being scraped out of whatever post happens to be at the top of the front page, which is currently "Contingencies". This is causing every post in the feed to reappear as a "new" post every time the prefix changes.

See here: http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/feed/http://penny-arcade.com/feed?n=99 , paying attention to the "original-id" fields.

The whole feed refreshed again this morning but now the links actually go to their respective comics/newsposts. We'll see what happens over the next couple days but it looks to me like it might be fixed.

  • z3r0w1n9z3r0w1n9 Registered User new member
Still appears busted for me (reading feed http://penny-arcade.com/feed with Netvibes). One of the Comic links (ironically, "Fix your Shit") works fine, linking to "http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/08/26", but all of the news articles link to "http://penny-arcade.com/news/<article title>" when they should link to "http://penny-arcade.com/<year>/<month>/<day>/<article title>" (if they're gonna work, anyway ... that or change the way the site refers to articles). Hope to see this fixed soon so I can keep reading in relative ease (and not have to work for it, however slight).

    - Zero

  • agilemaniaagilemania Lyon EstatesRegistered User regular
@Zero That's what I used to see until today. It works for me now in Google Reader and according to the feed's source code there are no longer any links with the broken "news" directory in the URL. Maybe the feed is cached somehow in Netvibes?

  • smythsmyth Registered User new member
Another spammy reappearance of the last 8 posts today. Sadly, the comic "Fix Your Shit" is no longer included.

  • WoganWogan Registered User, ClubPA regular
This is pretty annoying, I agree.

Also the lack of a PATV feed makes me

  • antifuseantifuse Registered User new member
Yup! The new site design definitely has some bugs in the RSS feed.

  • BodifBodif Registered User new member
Any chance someone is looking at fixing the RSS feed? It's irritating sorting through a flood of "new" items you've already seen every Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

  • KethennKethenn Registered User staff
    Hey guys,

I put in a fix for RSS last night. The issue was that the guids for each post weren't being generated properly (generated based on current date, not post's date) so old posts were constantly seen as "new". After today this should no longer be an issue - I'm sure I'll hear about it on Friday if that's not the case >_>

  • agilemaniaagilemania Lyon EstatesRegistered User regular
Thanks @Kethenn! Any update on feeds for PATV and/or individual shows?

  • smythsmyth Registered User new member
    Thanks!

  • agilemaniaagilemania Lyon EstatesRegistered User regular
Looks like there's a PATV RSS feed now. Huzzah!

    hi,
i just wanted to shout out a big THANK YOU for the individual RSS-Feeds!!!

you might consider to increase the limit inside the feeds from 10 to 50 (or even 100) notices/items.
i personally just watch extra credits and can't wait for the new episode every wednesday, so for me 1 item per feed would be enough but i'm not that egoistical to think only about me. there might be some people who only visit once a month or even once a year. yes its unlikely since you have such a good site ...

  • HansMaulwurfHansMaulwurf Registered User regular
    well
seems like the RSS feeds for extra credits are down... if you click on in it shows "Show Fucker 6000" ??? WTF?
it's like the only show i follow here so i'm wondering why extra credits is down but everything else is still running?
hope it will be fixed soon.

  • agilemaniaagilemania Lyon EstatesRegistered User regular
Looks like some kind of syntax error with the most recent EC episode. The feed for all of PATV is also somewhat broken (no shows after the last EC episode show up).

It's probably either the break tags in the description or the query string in the link to the external Extra Credits forum not being escaped correctly.

I believe that Show Fucker 6000 is the name of PA's internal RSS feed generator for PATV. I assume this because the description on the main site (comic/news) feed is News Fucker 6000.

    Can a mod/administrator forward this to @Kethenn?

Fixed (for this one anyway, there's a dumb encoding issue I have to settle). Thanks!
