This weekend I might be picking up a new system, it's specs are as follows:
Tyan Thunder K8S S2880
Dual AMD Opteron 246 CPUs
@2Ghz (not a Dual Core Opteron, dual Opteron
s)
2GB Corsair DDR RAM (the mobo supports up to 12GB)
RocketRaid 1820A SATA PCI-X Raid controller
Cooler Master CMSTACKER tower
460 Watt power supply
and a CDR/DVD and floppy drive to round everything out.
There are no hard drives included, but there is a COA for Windows Small Business Server 2003 and Outlook 2003 on the case. Pricetag is $50.
So this system is interesting to me for a few reasons, mainly because I've always been interested in checking out dual CPU systems, and I've never had the chance to play around with a RAID setup (most of my gear is pretty old) before. Plus, as a side bonus, this bitch has
ten USB ports.
I might be doing some lightweight video editing in the future, and I've been thinking of getting back into Source Engine mapping, so it would be nice to have a machine I could use to offload compiling tasks on. That, and there are the side benefits with having a spare system - media server, firewall, dicking around with alternative OSes, distributed computing, etc.
Obviously there are some downsides, mainly it only has PCI and PCI-X (not PCI-E) slots, the mobo is socket 940 (which means if I ever need to replace a CPU I'll have to call the Smithsonian rather than Newegg), and since it's an old server it's likely had an absolute metric shitload of uptime over the years.
So the reason I'm making this thread is because I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for other uses I could get out of this box, and also (mainly) if there is anything I'll need to know in terms of moving from building, maintaining, and troubleshooting standard desktop PCs to doing the same for a server with unusual hardware such as this one.

This was brought up just a few days ago on lifehacker.
My suggestion would be your choice of game servers (minecraft being my current favorite).
You could do the noble thing and have it running 24/7 for a distributed computing project like SETI or Folding@Home.

Might be time to see if I still have all of those old Quake II maps I collected over the years.
