(Reuters) - Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs on Wednesday resigned as chief executive of Apple Inc in a stunning move that ended his 14-year reign at the technology giant he co-founded in a garage.
Apple shares were suspended from trade before the announcement. They had gained 0.7 percent to close at $376.18.
The pancreatic cancer survivor and industry icon, who has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since January 17, will be replaced by COO and longtime heir apparent Tim Cook.
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," he said in a brief letter announcing his resignation.
The 55-year-old CEO had briefly emerged from his medical leave in March to unveil the latest version of the iPad and later to attend a dinner hosted by President Barack Obama for technology leaders in Silicon Valley.
Jobs' often-gaunt appearance has sparked questions about his health and his ability to continue at Apple.
"I will say to investors: don't panic and remain calm, it's the right thing to do. Steve will be chairman and Cook is CEO," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.
How much must it suck to build a company up out of nothing, become one of the premier brands in your field, make enough money to play poker with god, and then whoops you got cancer have fun in your misery.
I feel bad for all the people working at Apple that may lose their jobs at a particularly tough time because of dumb investor panic. Cook has been the COO of Apple for some time now. It's not like the guy is coming in not knowing his ass from a hole in the ground.

Apple's sitting on mountains of cash and they know that the reaction to this news is temporary, I doubt they'll be firing anyone because of it.
Sad about Steve though. He's done a great job taking Apple from niche market to the biggest company on the planet. I can't tell you how much time I've spent using my iphone.

it must suck infinitely less than anyone who gets cancer who isn't a billionaire

Yeah I was gonna say it sucks to have cancer but he can probably afford to buy the best health care money can buy.
yeah oh boy, having cancer sure must be fun if you're ultra wealthy
jobs is having a hell of a great time right now with his incurable degenerative illness
oh but he's wealthy so no sympathy for that guy
I don't think anybody is saying this though. So I don't know who you are making this argument against.
A few people are just saying it is probably better to have cancer if you have boatloads of money.
I'd imagine not being able to afford any doctors or medicine and bankrupting your family in the process sucks a bit more.
Yeah I think I just misinterpreted what langly said
