I use the same software on my 2007-era iMac and it works fine for me. I had a bit of trouble getting it to speak to my PS3 but that's because I had the option switched off on my wireless server.
Check your server settings - hopefully there will be a sticker on your router that tells you how.

I don't have any experience with that software, but I used MediaLink. It's $20, but it always worked flawlessly for me.

I have a way way way way way less powerful mac than you and I stream with the same program perfectly fine on a wired connection, up to and including HD content without a single hiccup.

I stream full HD over my wireless G all the time to both a PS3 (also wireless) and Xbox using PS3 MS, as do most of my friends. I'm not ruling wireless out - he could have a shit network - but I wouldn't jump there yet.
I dunno if the network is the issue. Playing games online is always perfect, as is downloading and stuff like that. I just reset my modem and router to be sure tho. Guess I'll let you know if that changes anything, but I doubt it will.

I think wireless is your problem.
