Diagnosing a Slow POST

Hello,
It's been hard to google this since discussions seem to conflate a problem at the BIOS level with window's booting, calling both a "slow startup." It hangs, sometimes for several minutes, on "detecting USB controllers" and in detecting my hard drives. Sometimes it boots right away, no problem. The computer works fine when it has booted. So maybe the mobo is bad, but is there a setting i'm not thinking about? I already updated the BIOS and tried booting w/o any hard drives plugged in.
I have an ASUS M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3 .

Have you tried booting up without any USB devices plugged in?
