Cheap printer with network connectivity?

Currently I have an HP Deskjet 842c hooked up to a machine running XP Pro shared over the network. Previously the machine was running Win2k and I had no issues with Windows Printer Sharing for the other 3 machines in the network (A desktop running linux, a desktop running XP Pro, and my MacBook). Ever since I put XP on that machine though it's been a nightmare. It can probably be configured to work reliably but frankly I'm sick of it and the printer is getting old anyway.

Preferably I'd like a printer that was independent of a computer, ala HP's JetDirect but I've only seen that on big laserjets and even then it was an added component. I'm wondering if there are any inkjet printers out there (or cheap laserjets that do color) that have something like JetDirect built into them. If not, could anyone point me at a cheap and reliable print server and a printer that would go well with it?

My router is D-Link so I'm thinking maybe I should get a D-Link print server if I go that route, but that shouldn't be a requirement if the print server is good.

Thanks, all advice much appreciated.

Also, I use this primarily for printing term papers and the like with some occasional printing that requires color but nothing photo quality.

tl;dr: Looking for a printer that isn't an expensive laserjet with built in network connection or a good (and cheap) print server device and printer to go with it.

Get a cheap laser printer. For $250-$350 you can get a nice color laser printer with network capabilities (even WiFi!) and you'll save enough on ink costs that it will make the extra cost a moot point. I picked up a KonicaMinolta 2340DL about 14 months ago for $350, and I'm still using the toner it came with; when I was on an inkjet I was dropping at least $40 a month on ink.

That sounds good but I can't seem to find it for sale online anywhere.

Tried eBay and Froogle which usually will yield at least one or two sources.

Don't know your definition of cheap, but I've been enjoying hot human-on-printer love with my HP 6980; it has built-in ethernet and Wi-Fi. $135 on sale right now.

You can get tiny little dedicated print servers that plug into the printer's parallel or USB port. Like this one:

if you already have the printer, this might be a better solution.

Edit: I should really read OPs in full before replying.

I use HP 3055 Multifunction printers for any branch too small to get a full sized copier.

Does the full Print/Copy/Fax from network, I think it requires a USB connection to scan though.

I saw that printer on NewEgg and it looks really good except for the fact that it's inkjet. I don't know if I want another inkjet, buying all those inkjet cartridges is getting old.

When I say "cheap" I mean somethign in the >$400 range.

This looks pretty good but there's two things about it. A) I didn't even know Samsung was making printers up until a few hours ago and B) There's only one customer review.

Only thing is that it does "SPL-C Host based printing" as opposed to something like PostScript which I know is compatible with everything.

I have this exact same model and I LOVE IT. I've had it for at least two years now and I still haven't had to change the original ink cartridge. Awesome stuff.
