While it's true that many of us here are eagerly anticipating EA and Pandemic's upcoming Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for the PS3, both companies today confirmed that the game is in development for other platforms as well, including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PC. Even better yet, all of these versions will ship concurrently this holiday season.
“Mercenaries 2: World in Flames delivers the next evolution in explosive open world gameplay - regardless of the system you play it on,†said Pandemic Studios CEO Andrew Goldman. “All four platforms are incredible gaming machines, and from the beginning we designed an experience that accentuates their individual strengths and delivers the interactive freedom and explosive action Mercenaries fans demand.â€
“All four platforms are incredible gaming machines, and from the beginning we designed an experience that accentuates their individual strengths..."
So uh, what are the strengths of the PS2 compared to the other three platforms? What does it have that they don't, beside the massive-hueg install base that is.

Fantastic news. I loved the original, but there was no way in hell I was going to buy a PS3 to play the sequel. I hope I get to shoot Hugo Chavez (or some facsimile of Chavez) in the face.
EA? Great. I can't wait to play the 360 version that only has one playable character instead of three and half the weapons available on the PS2 version. But wait I can buy new hairstyles for only $1 each.

Ive been waiting for this to get officially announced for so long, I loved the first one and didnt want to buy a PS3 for the sequel. Now all we need is Lair to lose exclusivity and I can forget the PS3 even exists at all.

1 character instead of 4, actually. There's a new female character.

Heh, I almost put instead of five in reference to Han Solo and Indiana Jones skins being in the original. :P

EA is just publishing it. Pandemic had control of the IP, and I don't think they are interested in doing stupid shit like that. The guy specifically said he wants all the versions to be exactly the same (other than the ps2 not having co-op and decent graphics)

I need a quote on this co-op thing. Are we talking about online co-op? I needs to know, man!

Oh thank God.
But wait. No co-op on the PS2 version? God damn it.
Pandemic confirmed that split-screen co-op is presently the focus of Mercenaries 2's multiplayer offering, but admitted that an online option is being investigated.
This was from E3 last year, so with any luck they will have both online and split-screen. I would be as giddy as a schoolgirl if that happened.
IGN's long interview specifically discusses online co-op.
Ah, you are correct. But they never mentioned split-screen co-op. I hope that means it's a "goes without saying" sort of situation.
Pretty sure it means they aren't doing it at all. They're thinking about system link. Really doubt they'll do split screen, for the same reasons Crackdown didn't. The systems (PS3, 360) are literally incapable of pulling it off.

On the FAQ on the Mercs 2 forums...
Will the game feature Online Co-op?
Currently we have only talked about and demonstrated our split-screen cooperative play. Online co-op is certainly within the realm of possibilities for the final game.
Do both players have to stay near one another in Co-op?
Each player can travel about the entirety of the game world, take jobs and engage in game play independent of the other player.

I tried playing Mercenaries on the PS2 today, after not having played it for a year or so. I never played it very far and now I remember why:
I can't play this game running at a MAX of 15 frames. I mean, I can't even aim properly if the game just bounces between 2 frames and 10 frames in firefights.
It's atrocious! And since the game isn't BC compatible on the 360, I can't even get the xbox version!
Wow, I never heard of it being that bad on the PS2, but I dont blame you for disliking it under those circumstances. And they really do need to get the Xbox version the 360 BC list. It would give me a chance to play the game again and see its wonderful explosions on my LCD monitor via the VGA adapter.

No, I think that's exactly it.
I mean, maybe no wii version is better than PS2 version ported over with bad controls, but it still seems odd to me.
EA? Double boo.
What is Pandemic doing...?
Anybody know if the 1st one is BC for the 360 yet save me a google?
It's not.

Maybe they will have another company do the crappy port.
Curses!
Ah well, roll on the sequal then!

But wait, also for PC? Thank you Jesus!

this also means that the first one will be set up for the BC list hopefully sooner rather than later.

However... holidays, again?! Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, probably Smash Bros, Metroid, and Galaxy all competing for my wallet.
I hate the holiday season...
I had enough fun with the first game to get excited over this.
