Putting PS3 guts into a PC case?
Descendant XSkyrim is my god now.Outpost 31Registered Userregular
So, my fucking PS3 decided to YLOD again. I'm out of warranty and don't have $160 to spend on a repair, so I'm think that I'd like to try to fix it myself and putting the guts into a PC case to improve cooling.
The problem is that I have no idea how to do this.
The 360/PS3 in a PC case mod gave me some great ideas, but I'm wondering if any of you can give me any pointers?

I like that idea, but if I had that much money I'd just go buy myself a new Slim PS3. The idea it to fit the whole works into a PC case, preferably one that costs less than $80.

Well do what he did, but without the watercooling business. And try to make it a little less fucking hideous.

I see what you're saying.
I'll be going to my local computer store tomorrow to take a look at HTPC cases...

Kep in mind the PS# mobo is about ATX sized, and needs space below it for that shitty, shitty fan.

If worst comes to worst, and you are a do it your self kind of person, you can make a blu-ray lazer pointer out of the leftover ps3 componets. It can burn things.
If the answer is something along the lines of "inside a cramped entertainment center behind a glass door sitting right on top of my DVR" than an HTPC case might not help you.
Also, keep in mind, while not as pretty, you could literally take it out of the PS3 case, put it in a card board box with some elevating screws and put fans into the cardboard box. Not that I'm saying doing this, just saying that you can go as big or small as you want.

I made that mistake the first time. Now it's sitting on top of the entertainment centre in the open. The sad thing was that it wasn't even behind a glass door the first time it went, it was in a sort of alcove under the TV. There just wasn't enough airflow.

Descendant X, you've basically described my nightmare scenario...though it's a bit less nightmarish, since I play fewer PS2 games today.
Glad to be of service.
I totaled up what I would get if I just traded the whole works in for some 3DS games or maybe a PC game they have lying around at EBGames and the total didn't even crack $100. I was told yesterday that I would only get $40 for my PS3, and I would have to lie about it working. That's just bloody depressing.
Looks like I'ma try the old reflow fix this weekend.

This is a really bad idea. If you do decide to go with it, make sure you get some appropriate eye protection. I'd imagine accidentally blinding yourself isn't fun.

Whelp, I'm thinking that it's the power supply. I'm going to take a look and see if I can find a guide that tells me how to hook up an ATX power supply to a PS3.
Or look for a used power supply...

Which makes it a great idea.
