Someone has bought me a present, but its basically money for a game off of steam.
Yes, its an unusualy present but Im not arguing.
Now the only steam games I have at the moment are CS:S, HL2 and Defcon.
I was thinking Psychonauts or Longest Journey. Basically, I would have gone to the Steam/source thread but thats all about upcoming games like Portal.
I need a quick decision here guys, just tell me which one is best of all the steam games, or a package of games I could get up to the cost of a full retail game (£40 or around $70-80) I already own Civ 4 but not via steam.
Am I right to lean for Psychonauts. Ive heard great things but know nothing about it. Same with Longest Journey. What about Dark MEssiah? Or Medieval TW 2. Ive got Rome Total war and that is amazing.
Already own. I kinda included that in HL2. It is pretty kick ass thats for true.

You are right to lean toward Psychonauts. If you like platformers, style, and fun, you can't go wrong there. Probably this would be my top recommendation.
If you've got a bit of money left over after that, and if you like strategy games, my opinion would be to get Defcon. It's simplistic on the surface, but tons of fun, and well worth the price. It's a little slow paced sometimes, but still worth the price of admission.
I also highly recommend Darwinia, if you're looking for an RTS.
I haven't played any of the other titles you listed as possible purchases, but I can say with total confidence: Psychonauts delivers, especially if you're looking for something quirky and unique.

I think Ill go wiht Psychonauts. What with Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid, and the new Sam and Max its a good time for me to get a plethora of cheap awesome games rather than another monolithic big game purchase (that said, Psychonauts is a full game, just dirt cheap)
Darwinia. Really the only RTS I've ever loved, it's soooo good. I just love being able to command units as well as direct their fire/gernades...it's a feature LONG over due to be standard in the genre.
Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast is a great arcadey racer, but its pretty much the same thing as Outrun 2, if youve played it.
Psychonauts is a great game but I'd reccomend using a controller. And be sure to collect a lot of crap in the beginning to avoid being forced to do it later.
I'm also going to throw in for Day of Defeat: Source. I play it several times a week and it's still fun.
There are a bunch of custom maps now that are just amazing. They make the official maps look like garbage sometimes.
If you can find a good server that has admins present, has FF on, and a good rotation of custom maps then it's an awesome experience. I like Mike's Marauders or the -Q- servers.
I've been spending money on steam lately, digital distribution rocks when you live over 400kms from a Futureshop/EB Games and your local selection depends on the ordering whims of one guy. How does Psychonauts play on a PC? Is this something I'd want to play with a gamepad or does it play equally well with a keyboard/mouse? I never came across it on the xbox and want to give it a try but haven't ever had a good gamepad setup for my PC yet either.
I think Ill go with a comination of psychonauts and darwinia. Have defcon, and uplink, loved both. And its 2 games for the price of 2. How can I go wrong.
I think Ill get Medieval 2 total war at retail. I just love the maps and the manuals that come with those games.
Thanks guys, I always knew psychonauts was good but only from heresay and reviews.
Am I the only person that thinks Psychonauts is over-rated? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad by any means... just not, well... superb like I expected it to be. I guess the whole Nickelodeon vibe kind of turned me off slightly. All that being said, it was still worth the $20 purchase (PS2).
Oh HELL no. They still haven't fixed it, which I discovered the hard way -- utterly buggy as shit (starting with a lovely finance bug that effectively gives you an "unlimited cash" cheat that you can't turn off), and Steam still refuses to acknowledge any responsibility. It took me a week of going back and forth between Steam and Strategy First to finally get my money back. (Accompanied by a sanctimonious "just so you know, we don't give refunds and we're making a special exception in this case" email from Steam. Yeah, tell it to the BBB, assholes.)

Steam has alot of nifty stuff that fell through the cracks on it now. it.

I'M A TWITTER SHITTER
A lot of the games you were mentioning have demos available on Steam or elsewhere. Why don't you try those out first?
Longets Journey ain't bad, but the excellent story is let down by the game design.
OH WAIT!
...fucking valve...
I hate that it's not that price for the 360 though. =.=

Really easy to see Tim Schaefer's input on the game.

JAGGED ALLIANCE 2!!!!
BUY IT NOW.
I've also been buying a lot of games on Steam.
Currently I have:
HL:S
HL2
HL2:DM
HL2:Lost Coast
HL2: EP1
CS:S
DoD:S
Painkiller Gold
Psychonauts
Jade Empire (Pre-load)
When Left4Dead is released I'll buy that, and the same goes for EP2/Portal/TF2.
I think Ill get Medieval 2 total war at retail. I just love the maps and the manuals that come with those games.
