Unknown car trouble.

My wife and I have a 2004 Focus ZX5 that has been giving us an issue recently.
Our commute is roughly 80 minutes one way to work each day and another 80 back (depending on traffic).
When we get home and kill the car all is well. If we need to go back out quickly the car turns over, revs to about 750 RPM and then stalls.
If the gas pedal is depressed the car stays running provided the RPM's stay about 1000.
If the car sits for an hour or so it turns over without a hitch.

Automatic transmission. Full tune up done in the last 3 months. 143000 k on it.

I can't think of anything clever.

Are any of your gauges indicating anything out of "normal" ? (hint, if the indicator arm is pointing toward anything red, that's bad)

Nothing like that thankfully. I considered that it's overheating but the temp gauge hovers right around (or just under) half.

Idle control valve might not be resetting right. Let the car idle for 2-3 minutes before shutting it off when you get home and see if that fixes it.

Check oil and water just to be safe - it does happen that sensors or dials get sort of stuck and won't show values out of the ordinary.

I would get your fuel pump checked. The focus has had a lot of problems with fuel pumps over the years, and this sounds like one symptom of it.
