Uhh....

Question's.....as simple as the topic, really. I want to build up a library of Godzilla films, and I'm curious about which ones are best.

    All of them.

But really, I like Gozilla vs Mothra the most as it was the first one I watched as a kid.

Yeah, that's my favorite so far as well. Fond childhood memories of it.

Destroy All Monsters is the best Godzilla movie ever, hands down. Godzilla 2000 actually wasn't too bad either.

Godzilla. The one with Jean Reno and Matthew Broderick.

Im serious, its not a 'godzilla' film in the way you are talking, but its still good. I like it. Its good disposable popcorn fun and a lot of people lack that in their DVD collections. I like to have plenty of those types of films for those times when you dont really want to watch Schindlers list or something emotionally taxing.

Try Godzilla: Final Wars too. It came out in 2004, but is virtually unknown. Bonus:
The real Godzilla beats the crap out of the Godzilla (renamed "Zilla" in this flick) from the 1998 American Godzilla movie.

Not only that, but it brings back a ton of the classic Toho monsters from past Godzilla movies.

I enjoy almost all of the Hensei (sp?) series, which started with Godzilla 1985 (Gojira 1984) and ended with Godzilla vs. Destroyah. These movies were unique in that they actually attempted to maintain continuity, and really weren't bad.

Well, it depends on which ones you are more keen to liking.

Do you enjoy the older ones, which were big on cheesey, and half the time had Godzilla playing the hero.
Are you more of a fan of the city destroying, kicking ass and taking names Godzilla of the late 80s, and early 90s? I'd include the origional Godzilla and maybe Godzilla raids again, (haven't seen it, so not sure), into this group.
Or are you more of a fan that leads more towards the 2000 series, with less cheese and more CGI?

If you narrow down which type you are more prone to liking, it is easier to suggest which ones to get first.
Though right now, I would recommend just looking for which ones you can find on DVD. There are quite a few that aren't on DVD, or aren't easy to find I believe.

I already have a bunch of Godzilla movies, actually:

    Original Era:
    # Godzilla, King of the Monsters
    # Godzilla vs. Mothra
    # Godzilla's Revenge
    # Terror of Mechagodzilla
    # Rodan
    # Destroy All Monsters

    From the 1990s:
    # Godzilla Vs. Destroyah
    # Godzilla Vs. Space Godzilla
    # Godzilla 2000

Mostly, I want to know which of the post-2000 films are best, as well as any big important ones I may be missing.

Also, could someone explain the continuity of the 90s films to me, and what order they're supposed to be in?

    Godzilla 1985
    Godzilla Vs. Biollante

Those are connected to the 90s movies, *edit* and are directly connect now that I started watching the 90s ones again.

Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah (Where godzilla gets "revamped" I guess, reborn with modern nuclear power)
Godzilla & Mothra: The Battle for Earth (Actually, no major plot points that connect it that I can think of, only minor stuff)
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla 2 (dubbed 2 I think just so people wouldn't get confused. Where the baby is first introduced, and godzilla gains more power)
Godzilla Vs. Space Godzilla (First show of godzilla's power getting even stronger, baby grows, yada yada)
Godzilla Vs. Destroyah (Godzilla's body falls apart from growing power, baby fully grows.)

I think this is supposed to lead into 2000, with the baby godzilla in the 90s being the new godzilla.

As for which ones to get, I would say either get them in order. Megagurius, Vs. Mechagodzilla, Toyko S.O.S. and than Final Wars. Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah doesn't fit into this series.
Or, I would say get Final Wars and Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. I think final wars has about the coolest monster in any godzilla movie, (when mothra fights gigan).

Negative. Godzilla 2000 was yet another reboot of the series. Godzilla 1985 was the first major reboot to the series where it and the rest of the Hensei series disregarded all the previous movies except for the first Godzilla. This series ended with Godzilla vs. Destroyah which was the last movie before the Sony version of Godzilla. Godzilla 2000 was Toho's attempt to take the character back and was another reboot for the series, marking the beginning of the series, which has pretty much no continuity and most of the movies are independent of each other (except for Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo S.O.S.).

And Godzilla vs. Mothra: Battle for Earth is very loosely important/related to Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla.
