[Dead or Alive 5] online might be ok, but an online pass is not

Tag battle finally revealed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeWPv3vhlLk&feature=player_embedded
Tag power blows are surprisingly boring. Just a free character switch. Nice to know that the VF characters will get some unique tag throws (even if they're just replacing a partner for an already existing tag throw).
Also no surprise that the flat stages weren't introduced to appease any competitive players (since there was no real outcry from the tiny DOA competitive community), but are just there for tag battles. Seems ram limitations have struck again.
Team Ninja is also saying that they've further improved training mode with better AI options, specifically settings for them to struggle out of staggers and stuns. This is very nice.
They're also saying that the tutorials packed into the story mode will mostly be optional stages. Also very nice.

New official trailer is out:

Characters shown for the first time are Helena, Brad, Eliot, Gen Fu, and good old Alpha-152. Also a few new stages and costumes.

Is she OP? I ask because I seem to do very well with her... and usually something is afoot if I am doing well in fighting game.
I also did not know that DoA5 was going to include VF characters... that's pretty rad.
If i am not mistaken she's horrendously overpowered.
Also yeah, no real upgrade because honestly the new guy is trying to get his footing with the series since, especially with DOA, Itagaki was so involved with the series.
My hype meter is a cool medium for this, mostly due to "yeah, i am going to take less of an emphasis on tits and ass, by the way, here's a shitton of tits and ass."
Pretty much fine with it being a very fanservicey game. Of course, it seems every fighting game under the sun is now filled with cheesecake these days, so it gets a little grating.
Surprisingly...I just happen to think its a fun game.
Its the "no im not doing this, but actually im totally doing this because i am caving to managment"
The one thing i appreciated about Itagaki was that even
though he was an asshole, he did exactly what he wanted to do and had a clear vision
about what he wanted to do. Hyashi, i think, is very clearly getting run over on some of his creative decisions(admittidly most of them are terrible).

She is (or was) a boss character. Of course she's terribly overpowered. Sometimes, beating seemed to involve way more luck than skill. Though that could've just been my impression since I'm not very skilled.
So the cat is just about out of the bag for the rest of the characters, though Team Ninja says there's some surprises still. I am considering NEC again this year, even though I don't know what I would play. If doa5 is fun enough it will up my chances of going, though.

Oh, and that Spartan.
So, basically, fuck Team Ninja all over again. I don't even want to buy it anymore.

Also, Mortal Kombat 9 had them, so DOA5 isn't the first. I also bought MK9, but that was before I knew about online passes.
Ah, well, whatever floats your boat.

Should've sprung for the Collector's Edition.
It's like you think online passes are a thing that exists for no reason instead of a reaction to the market.
Online passes are a thing because of lots of people not buying games new, so companies do it to try and make up some of that lost revenue by either making the choice to go used over new harder, or getting some later income from used buyers getting a pass.
It's "pure greed" in the same way putting out a product to make money to begin with is "pure greed". It is not this horrible immoral thing you are making it out to be. Their actual customers are not effected, and the people that aren't their customers will either become one by buying a pass or not have as good of a product as their customers.
Like, dude, you are getting bent out of shape over a company trying to make money off of their product. If "pure greed" is such an awful thing than you might as well stop buying any games.
So basically you'll pirate the game because you got upset over a slip of paper.
They're not losing money on this, they're just not getting all the money they want. abloobloo

And after hearing this talked about on the Bombcast this week, I am kind of interested in trying it out even though I've never really given DOA a shot before
And saying that "adding value" is the solution is silly as hell. Just a totally nebulous suggestion that doesn't really mean anything and suggests that any game that loses sales to the used market doesn't have "enough value"...whatever the fuck that even means.

They're making way more money off of people that don't have foolish pride about things that are literally meaningless to them than they would have if they didn't put out an online pass. Making any money off of it makes it instantly not-pointless.
Like me, for example
I wanna try DOA, but I'm sure as shit not gonna spend $60 to try it
But at a reduced price like $30 or something used, sure, maybe
And if I like it, I may just pay that $10 to pay online and now Tecmo gets theirs instead of GameStop getting all of it
Hell, odds are you'll be able to get this new for thirty or even less between now and the end of the year, thanks to the one-two punch of Black Friday and Christmas. Ditto for nearly every other major release this year.

Oh noes! A company giving their paying customers the same thing they've always got and then doing something that will maybe make them profit a little off of used sales! How scandalous!
Dude. The online pass is only something you buy if you buy it used. The devs get no money whatsoever from used game sales, that is why online passes exist. I have no problem with this and I shall be buying the game anyway, because I don't even have XBL. The DOA series has always been games designed for you to have fun with friends. And that's exactly why I'll buy this one.
'Course, I don't play online, so online passes are of no value to me anyway.
