I has Dog.
I capitalize Dog because Dogs have earned my respect for they love man, no matter how bad we treat them in return. This thread is for them, but you can talk about other pets.... if you have to. (You really shouldn't because it's disrespectful to real pet owners. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR STUPID HERMIT CRAB OK?)

My new puppy (Eli) is an 8 week old Black Labrador Retriever and he is something INSANE. He is awesome and his energy is already helpful in keeping me moving and motivated, the downside is he doesn't like my job (which is programming) and so he chews on me alot, lol.

This is my first puppy and I really want to make sure he is well. I've looked into training and it seems like the big deal now-a-days is this "Click-Treat" training which apparently works really well on dogs, especially labs.

POTTY TRAINING
Right now the method is that we had puppy pads but the sliding glass door, whenever he wants to go out he goes there and slowly we are making the pads smaller and he's getting better at going to the door now - the only issue is he won't TELL us. I can't figure it out except to ask him, but since he always wants to go out and play I feel like I am reinforcing the wrong thing, so we still have accidents, but I am sure he is getting the idea.

I want to hook a bell up by the door so he will push it when he wants to potty, hoping he catches on to that because that would be AWESOME.

OBEDIENCE/TRICK TRAINING
So right now he knows how to Sit, Down, and Bark randomly which... isn't really a trick. He's not bad about it, but were into week two of having him with more and more training and he just cycles through it. He won't DO it because he has to, he's just going through the motions. That's when I researched Click Training and I am going to start that here tonight and give him a few weeks with it to see how he responds.

SOCIAL TRAINING
Eh, not much yet but... when I move back to Portland next year there will be plenty of interaction for him. I don't even know what to expect. Any advice or stories about dogs in public and being managed would be awesome.

TL:DR; Training a dog is hard and fun and confusing and makes you learn about your own patience and understanding! Talk about your training methods or how if you put peanut butter on your balls it's o.k. if your dog licks it....

....because it's YOUR dog.
