"Wing Commander Arena will feature four styles of play: single player, multi-team, multi-player free for all and multi-player duel. Within the game there are eight game maps that include team maps, free for all maps and dueling maps, so Wing Commander Arena offers a gameplay experience for every Arcade gamer, whether they want a quick ten minutes of action or a longer more immersive game."
I love me some arcade games, but I kind of question the wisdom of online MP focusses arcade game. Most Arcade games haven't really been able to sustain a decent community for very long, and your going against Halo 3, Shadowrun, Graw 2, R:6 vegas and gears for peoples online time.
This could be cool, but just as Shadowrun has banked a wholly unrelated product on an established name, this looks to shoehorn gameplay that could just as easily be called Generic Space Assault 12, and slaps it with a name with some nostalgic appeal. And like Shadowrun, it could still be fun, but it's not Wing Commander.
Did you guys actually play through WC1 & 2? Those games were hardly 'sims' by the standards you guys are thinking of. They were very arcadey in terms of gameplay. And awesome because of it (well, and the absolutely amazing writing and quite good voice acting for wc2).
I think this will rock. Used to play a lot of dogfights with a friend when Armada came out.
I thought the whole point of Wing Commander was that it was a space shooter sim with a heavy emphasis on plot complete with multiple storyline paths. Making it an online deathmatch sort of affair seems to defeat the point.

It looks like they are trying to make an online dogfight-based game set in the Wing Commander universe, which as someone pointed out above is practically the same as slapping a different coat of paint on an otherwise generic concept. I'm not saying it won't be fun, but you can count me among those in the "I wish they'd just bring back the actual Wing Commander games" club. I played the shit out of those games back in the day. It was also the first PC game that made me realize the PC speaker was no longer going to cut it as a sound device.
Is it really too much to ask for a modern old-school space dogfighting sim?
I swear, if adventure games can make a comeback, why the hell can't space sims and turn based strategy?
TBS doesn't need to make a comeback; it's going strong as we speak. Civ 4 is one of the best games ever, the Advance Wars series sells like hotcakes, there's Front Missions and Fire Emblems and NIS games and Yggdra Unions and all kinds of shit coming out all the time.
As far as space sims... yeah, you're right. I wish they would come back too.

So, storyline?
I've always played the WC games for story, so without that...
Still good news though. I haven't played a WC in a while, and Prophecy kind of has me on the bridge.

True the original games were kind of arcadey, but I don't see any screenshots with cockpit view.... IMO it ain't wing commander if it doesn't play like that
It's cool to see this series coming back, but like others I'm a little skeptical of it being just a multiplayer game. Maybe this will pave the way for a new single and multi player WC game?
Also, does the Wing Commander name have the clout it used to have? I'm not knocking it at all. I love the series and I own all of the old titles, but still, I wonder if due to the length of time it has been since the last title whether or not the series means anything to the average gamer these days. Too bad that might help them to get away with a poor "Re-imagining."

There are two types of Wing Commander games I'd like to see...
1) An updated (meaning graphics and some gameplay touches to make sure it surpasses Freespace 2) version of the original. Maybe set earlier in the war. For instance, following the events culminating in Custer's Carnival.
2) An MMO sort of like Armada, but with groups of players setting off in carriers, maybe with attached (NPC) Exeters/Draymans/etc. (or Kilrathi equivalents) to go capture installations and planets like a space-combat equivalent of Planetside. Ground combat would not be modeled, you'd just keep your transports alive and get them to the installation/planetary orbit intact to deliver their complement of special forces. So, your escort missions would actually serve a purpose.
Of course, developing the Kilrathi to the extent required to sustain interest in them as an MMO race might get somebody sued by Larry Niven. :-P

There's still a large fan community around it, so I'm sure it has enough left to keep them from trying to make a "WC 1 OMGEXTREME DIRECTOR'S CUT".
All they need to do is take the original game (or 2), add co-op for the campaign and a mulitplayer team deatchmatch, and poof everybody would be happy.
Don't even bother updating the graphics. it doesn't need it.
Jesus, why do all my favourite franchises end up sodomized and consoleified..
While generally pessimistic about this release (I would much rather have the Prophesy storyline finished), it's not like this is the first odd turn the franchise has taken. Wing Commander Armada and Academy weren't exactly the most traditional Wing Commander games either, but they succeded in being fun, if not traditional WC games too.

HEY HEY HEY!
Wing Commander 1 on the SNES was fucking AWESOME.
Yeah, especially when you were used to the PC version, trying to figure out how to do certain things when you were short about 50 buttons.
The Sega CD version was the same way. Good lord the button combinations you had to learn to do everything were crazy. Once you did though, it was rather fun. I heard the Wing Commander adaptation they did for the 3DO was excellent too.
Even if Arena itself is not very interesting for all of us old Wing Commander fanatics, it is a good way for EA to bring the franchise back.
First because it's a quick and cheap way to introduce the new, console-centric audience to the brand and the franchise.
And second because it is a low risk way to measure the reaction of the console crowd to the brand and franchise.
If they made a huge Wing Commander 6 game for the PC and it flopped, it would have been the final nail in the coffin. As we all know, Space sims and PC games are not the hottest places in the industry right now.
Of course, probably more than anyone else here, I'd love to see that huge, PC Wing Commander 6. And that's why I think that Wing Commander Arena is the right step into actually getting that game.
BTW: WC1 on the SNES might be cool, but it's got nothing on the PC version

If you really think that a arcadey shooter has the chance to give us a proper Wing Commander 6, then you truly are a more positive thinker than I am.
EDIT:As several of you have said, the WC games may not have been the pinnacle of "advanced" game mechanics but they sure were fun space shooters with a decent (and sometimes great) cinematic space opera plot. This new WC game looks pretty much like a simple shooter that some friends made as their computer science project. Maybe I'm a bit too critical this early in development but it'll take a lot to convince me that this is a game worthy the WC franchise.

I don't think they'd be using the license if they didn't think they could get some mileage out of it.
And, off-topic, if there's anywhere that a space-sim revival could happen, it's on the consoles. God knows that buying a joystick is a death-sentence for any PC game.

It looks pretty "arcadey" if you ask me...
not what i was hoping for... it could still turn out good but why f with the greatness of the first couple games?

Origin needs to do a remake of the original for the Wii.
Origin... Isn't going to be doing much of anything.
Ok, their corporate masters at EA. :P
Yeah the wiimote would make a pretty mean cockpit control stick...

without the anchor you have little to no frame of the degree of motion you need.
if you have a joystick, pick it up in midair and move it, and feel how awkward it is.
without the anchor i also assume you'd feel little to no "attachment" to your airplane.
someone could make it work i guess though, since its not like excite truck = car driving.
i just know i'm picky enough that I would want the Wii mote anchored.

I mostly was talking about X-Com and JA style games, so I should have put "squad based" somewhere in there.

and maybe I'm being cynical but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Arena will not measure up. I agree with the earlier diagnosis:

Granted, the last time I played WC1 was like 4 years ago, and the SNES version even longer. But WC1 wasn't a particularly complicated game.
