Star Control II - Tycho and Gabe, help influence getting a new SC developed!
Maybe I'm the only person that recognized the reference to Star Control II in Tycho's post on September 12th, but I about swallowed my tongue. Star Control II is my favorite game of all time, and still has quite the cult following. I'm hoping that some of you on the forum are also fans of the game (SC III excluded - I thought it was OK, but not nearly as good as the ones done by Toys For Bob).
Some time ago Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III (the original developers of SC II) started a petition to convince Activision to allow them to create a new Star Control game. I'm hoping that if we can get Tycho and Gabe to throw their weight into the push, or at least show support for a new SC in one of their posts that perhaps it'll gain enough attention to stand a serious shot at becoming reality.
Perhaps if enough of us email our beloved Penny Arcade authors then we can convince them to at least do a small blurb about the push for a new SC in one of their news posts, as I can't imagine that either one of them will end up reading my post.
I realize it's just a hope and a dream, but I for one would die of happiness if a modern Star Control were released.
Here's to hoping that we SC fans get some support,
I am obliged to post here and I do wish for another Star Control game. It was a perfect blend of action, RPG and strategy. There was in depth lore and the music was mindblowingly awesome. Seriously, just find a youtube video with a SCII theme.
However with the recent influx of remakes like Syndicate and X-Com, I fear the worst...
... not really because SCIII has already been made
Bits and pieces of Star Control I and II live on in modern games: The space exploration end game for Spore, resource hunting on planets in ME2, space ship dog fights in countless of flash games. Even though I miss the series, I think there are many games that fill the sci-fi RPG void.

I have fond memories of dicking around in SCII when I was young.
And by dicking around, I mean, my tiny self using trial and error (And repeated restarts.) to figure out how to get as far in the game as possible, racking up a casualty list that would make even the hardiest of Red Shirt hating captains weep in fear.
I'm pretty sure at some point in the game I screwed myself out of actually progressing, too.
That being said. Fuck the Spathi. For being cowards, their ships were intensely overpowered.

I would settle for a HD remake of SCII on XBL/PSN/Steam, but a new one would be pretty great.
I played the game for years before I finally broke down and said "fuck it" and got a walk through.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Looking back I can't believe that I actually completed the game on my own considering how old I was at the time. It was probably just randomly trying devices around places that got me to use the sun device on the CHMMR homeworld.
As for an HD remake, there are a couple of fan projects out there trying to do just that, but every fan project I've ever seen has grandiose ideas (whether just remaking a modern version of the game, or trying to create their own 'sequel') has always run out of steam. Understandable, considering the amount of hours required to do either task. Most of them seem to go somewhat strong for a few months and then team members gradually do less and less, and then finally drop off.
If only I could program better - and had any idea how to do anything 3D - I'd love to make just the melee portion of the game using 3D models and whatnot so that the ole ships could be fought with pretty lighting effects, etc.
On a completely unrelated note, I've been using the music from the game for the various races as ringtones on my phones for YEARS - even before .mp3s were routinely supported. I remember having this old Samsung phone (it had a color screen ZOMG!!) and I had to convert the midi files (or .mp3s, I forget) to this odd Qualcomm format in order to have the phone be able to play them.
I still use the game's music as ringtones for different friends to this day. My short, muscular and overly aggressive friend gets the Thraddash tone. My friend Bree always gets the Syreen, my sister gets the Spathi (she's goofy, but awesome), my text notification is the Druug Melee winning ditty, etc. I don't know that I could ever give them up.
