I got a great deal on a 1gig micro thumbdrive, only $20. Unfortunately, I didn't look it over too hard because it is U3 enabled. Everytime I plug it into my computer, it tries to install the U3 software and freezes my computer. If I hit shift and disable autorun it works fine, but that is not a working solution. If I forget to hold down the shift key, my comp freezes and everything I'm doing is lost! Not to mention I don't want all the bullshit software it tries to stick on my comp.
Apparently U3 thumb drives are supposed to have an uninstaller on them to remove all the U3 components, but mine didn't. I tried erasing all of the files including hidden files and then formatting, but it still attempts to install the U3 software. Any advice? The drive currently shows that it has no files on it, if that is important in any way.
You need to remove the U3 shitware from the thumb drive. In the mean time, hold down SHIFT when you put in the drive to keep AutoPlay from reinstalling it.
The uninstaller froze my computer...and I was recording the Office
This is ridiculous, I'd return the damn drive but I don't have the receipt or box anymore. I didn't think a disk drive would be so difficult.
That uninstaller froze my computer also. My computer never freezes, it can go months without being shutdown. Screw it, I guess I'm out $20. Fuck U3.
U3's a odd feature... for me, I happen to actually like it, since it works well with managing thumbdrive applications like my Portable Opera and Trillian. But yeah, it isn't without its faults... At least it is cheap.

I have an ex-U3 thumbdrive, and had one hell of a time getting it uninstalled. It ended up my problem was Daemon Tools. Apparently U3 doesn't play well with virtual drive utilities, as it tries to install a virtual CD device itself. I ended up having to temporarily uninstall Daemon Tools to be able to run the uninstaller properly. So, if you've got anything like that installed, that might be your problem.

Do a google search for U3 Removal or something.
There you go.

Even if you don't have a Sandisk stick. Try it anyway.
