...because damn, does that program suck. Free would be nice, but if I have to pay for a really nice video editor that is fine.

    Adobe makes a version of its Premier software at a consumer price point. I haven't used this one personally, but I used the professional version many years ago and it was great. Their consumer version of Photoshop is very full featured so I'd assume Premier would be similar.

    Depending on how much editing you need to do, VirtualDub might work fine.
