Hey - so as the years have gone by my circle have friends have become more and more physically inactive. Now I'm pretty nerdy and love playing video games/card games as much as the next person, but I really want to find good tennis partners, play ultimate frisbee again, and learn how to dance etc.
So basically I yearn to do more physical activities aside from the daily exercise I'm already doing.
With that in mind - I'm aware of stuff like meetup.com and learned about http://www.kickball.com/ which I thought was really awesome. Are there other websites dedicated to meeting up with people with similar interests in activities? For reference I'm in CT.
Local papers tend to cover per-exisintg stuff that you can join. We had a dodgeball league one summer that our local paper heard about and we got some new players through that.
Damn, meetup worked great for me, but I hear it varies per city.
Do you have a rock climbing gym nearby? I found most people there to be really friendly. All the gyms in my are area offer some sort beginner class, so that would be a good way to met people. Also rock climbing is fantastic activity.
I'll check out the local papers and see if I can find anything - I'm in a pretty small town near New Haven though.
@Barth: Seriously! So hard to meet new people in adulthood compared to college!
@Jefe - it's always really hard starting something like that because people are in their mid 30's where I work, so many of them have families. I know they used to do a softball league before things got really busy for many people and their families.
@kyougu - that actually sounds like a really good idea. Would be a really good way of getting rid of some pent up energy and building my upper body strength - I used to climb trees in my free time, but being near the city doesn't give me a whole lot of tree climbing options (unless I want to get arrested haha).
Thanks for the suggestions guys - helps give me ideas. If anyone has any additional ones feel free to post.
Dude, you're near New Haven and you can't find anything? Have you even bothered to look around the campus?
Well - I thought that most of the events and activities that happened at Yale were for Yale/Southern students only - isn't that the case? Didn't think the general population was allowed to participate. Been driving to stamford for dance lessons :P
Oh, that reminds me, look for swing dancing spots.
Tons of fun, good way to meet people. Again, they'll have a beginner night where you switch multiple partners for like an hour before they actually open up the dance floor.

My buddy plays rugby near you if you want to get into something like that. All said and done though, while there may be student only things through the University, there are going to be a number of just open social things happening that people who also happen to be students organize.
