The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So with the DC reboot I thought it was an excellent time to get back into everything. I'm more of a Marvel guy (That, and Ninja Turtles), but I have NO clue what's going on there anymore. I'm just gonna start out with a couple issues a month, using pocket money mostly-can't really spare anymore, and I need suggestions. How is the Batman: Dark Knight new No. 1? And should I go with Green Latern, or Green Latern Corp? Feel free to suggest others...
It's only two issues in so far, but yeah I like it. They're setting up the world while telling the turtles origins alongside the likes of April and Casey right now.
Nice, maybe we'll get another awesome Shredder decapitation. And this time make the best turtle do it... Raph. I'm not exactly sure how you cut someone's head off with sai though...
If you like Marvel, Mark Waid just started a new Daredevil series that is pretty great, and the X-books are just starting an event called Schism that is pretty good.
For DC yeah, you're going to want Batman and Action Comics if you like Superman at all.
On the DC side
-Batman - good first issue that looks to be basic batman fun all around
-Justice League - sets up the new universe, and I've got a good feeling about future stories
-Demon Knights or Frankenstein - if you want some fantasy violence instead of capes and tights
And I've always prefered Green Lantern to GL Corps. But GL is one of the two characters to really carry over the recent events, so GLCorps may be more you if you don't know exactly what has happened recently.
On Marvel
-Fear Itself is the current event, and I can take it or leave it. But it'll be ending soon and series can begin to focus on themselves again mostly. And on that note
-Avengers - is pretty great and looks like it'll be starting a big story after Fear Itself wraps up
-Uncanny X-Force - if you feel like looking up backstory and maybe getting a few backissues, this is one X-Fans seem to swear by these days. It is good.
But yeah, the DC thread has a bunch of recent recommendarion posts.
Practice Round, my blog where I talk (mostly) about comics.
Hm, Animal Man looks interesting, can I get into that when I have no clue who this guy is? I think I'll check out Green Lantern Corps too. I've always prefered Guy to Hal. I followed the Lantern wars thing pretty loosely, so will I be confused if I pick up Red Latern Corps?
Regarding Marvel, pretty much anything by the "architects" is worth reading. That's Bendis, Fraction, Hickman, Brubaker, and Aaron. Remender is another fantastic writer for Marvel.
There have already been plenty of Marvel Point 1s, and most of the ones I've read have been pretty decent. Actually, I didn't know there were more coming.

Red Lanterns had a good first issue and I hope it gets more awesome. If you know about Blackest Night and the different lantern corps then go for it. War of the Green Lanterns doesn't really play into it.

Animal Man is really cool, and you don't really need any setup going into it. I only knew what his powers were beforehand, and I loved the first issue.
Spider-Island has been super fun, even without it having a conclusion I still recommend it and it's sidestories.
( This better not cause an ending I hate, cause I'll blame myself, then you, then THE WORLD!)

Seconded. Add to that list Superman (not bad but there will be a change in writer/artist with issue #7 so might be worth it after that point).
edit: Superboy is very good. And his new costume is great.
Although they are also all $3.99, not so good if just going in with pocket change.

That's a good idea. I think the first 10 or so have been collected in an over-sized trade by now.
