Decorative Model Airplanes (specifically a Cirrus SR22?)
Hey all, I haven't been on the forums in quite a few months now but I've got a few things I think I'll be posting in H&A in the next few days! This is one of them.
I'm looking for a gift for a friend of mine and I'd like a model of a Cirrus SR22 - one for display only. I'm looking for something small and, I guess, die-cast metal. All my google searches so far have either given me model R/C airplanes, or stand-mounted decorative models that are made of handcrafted wood and start at minimum $150. I would gladly drop that sort of money on this girl but I'd rather start off with something simpler and cheaper. I don't mind going all out but that's not my intention here. I'd love any suggestions, stand or no stand, wood, metal, decent plastic, whatever.
When I was a kid I had a model of a Swissair MD-11 (ominous, I know) that was about two inches long and made of fairly good quality die cast metal. That's extraordinarily simple but not out of the question. If anyone has any idea of some place online that sells what I'm trying to describe, I'd like to hear.
I've had a much easier time finding classic aircraft and airline-related models in the past. I know exactly the sort you're searching for, though. I'll start looking to see what I can find.
Damn, I poked around and about all I could find were 1:27 - 1:32 scale wood or resin desktop models that run between $130 and $300. The cheapest ones I found were at ModelBuffs.com at $130 plus another $50 for S&H. Ouch! Like I said before, with such a specific manufacturer and model, you may be limited to the higher-end types of models.
If you were looking for something from Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Douglas, Lockheed...even Tupolev, British Aerospace, Fokker...I could point you to some nice die-cast or resin models.
They have a custom option, which makes me think you could get that specific model, and even have it specific to the aircraft you're modeling. It is certainly not cheap though.
Alright guys, I appreciate the help. Ended up buying one on ebay ("used", from Pacific Aircraft, officially licensed) from a very reputable seller. Looking forward to getting it in the mail.

How about a sweet-ass P-51B Mustang?!

We'll save her custom one for another Christmas
Thanks!
