Disney cartoon thread.

I know there's already a Western Animation thread, but since these classic shorts are so rarely talked about, I thought them deserving of a thread of there own. In the last hundred years of American history, there has been two series that define classic animation, Looney Tunes, featuring WB's cast of hairballs, and these guys, the stars of Disney's various animated shorts and specials.

These is of course the legendary Mickey Mouse, along with his friends Goofy and Donald, his girl Minnie, and his dog Pluto. Along with perennial nemesis Pete (who started out as a cat, but was later changed into a dog).

One of my favorite types of Disney shorts was Goofy's "how-to" shorts. like this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwbE3bPvzr4

Another was the criminally underused and underappreciated Three Caballeros.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf2OYnxOeps

(by the way, when Panchito says "gay" he doesn't mean it that way)

What about you guys? What do you remember about these old cartoons?

EDIT: Also, it would be criminal of me to not show you guys this, The Lion King fans in the room should really like it.

Disney made another anti-nazi cartoon, though this one was more funny, than informative and shocking.

I keep forgetting I need to watch Duck Tales more often. Also, Darkwing Duck.

The Gaston song from Beauty and the Beast wins hands down for best Disney song.

The songs in the movies are more memorable than the plots because the songs are the plots.

YES! Those were always my favorite. The basketball and fishing ones, too. It's like there was some universe populated entirely by Goofies.

I love this music video. We played it at our wedding on the big screen, in between normal wedding party songs:

Edit: Or does this not count because it's not technically a cartoon?

A Goofy Movie is funny, moving and underrated. Giving Goofy a teenage son who is perpetually embarrassed by him was a brilliant move. The scene where they shout at each other as the car careens off a cliff and bounces down a series of rock-towers was fantastic.

I Wanna Be Like You is one of the best Disney songs. Or at least it would be if it wasn't so racist!

The Brave Little Toaster is trippy as hell, and a dry run for a lot of what later became Toy Story. I never saw it as a kid, but my 4yo loves it.

I dig the instrumentals in that Manson cover, but the guy himself sounds like he's trying way too hard. That's my problem with a lot of Manson, actually.

edit: While we're on the subject, I always thought The Nightmare Before Christmas got way more love and attention than it deserves. I love the world and the visuals they create, but the story doesn't really grab me at all and most of the lyrics strike me as pretty weak. Catchy, though.

The problem with Henry Selick's films is they don't have interesting characters. Jack, James, and Coraline are all bland and personality-less. The films' other characters, wacky though they may be, aren't really any better.

His films sure look cool though!

oh boy I've always wanted a nemesis!

I only read a little bit of Coraline: the book, but what struck me was that the titular character really felt like an actual 11 year old girl. When you read the book you're like “okay this is clearly written by somebody with daughters.” Movie-Coraline doesn't compare. There's this part in the book I liked where Coraline doesn't like what her father made for dinner, so she goes and pops a frozen dinner into the microwave. I don't mind that that specific moment wasn't in the film, the problem is there are no moments in the movie that feel that real.

To be clear I think Coraline and Nightmare Before Christmas are good films! They just aren't Pixar or classic-Disney quality.

(On the other hand, I rewatched James and The Giant Peach for the first time since I was a kid recently, and I don't think that one holds up. In large part because the songs suck. I like some of Randy Newman's work – I'll cut anyone that says You've Got a Friend in Me is a bad song. And his score for Toy Story 3 is really good! And so is the Monk theme! But he dropped the ball with James and the Giant Peach.)

See, again, I disagree. Coraline, like most of Gaiman's work, is just the barest sketch of a character. Most of his characters are, and that's fine within the confines of his stories, but she wasn't a real 11 year old, she wasn't a real anything. She was just a name. The movie Coraline was way more developed. She wasn't lovable perse, but she was feisty and interesting. Also, it's hard to like Jack in Nightmare because he's so obtuse. But it's easy to love Sally and really feel for her. There is a lot of emotion there.

Disney actually made a new Goofy "how-to" cartoon to warm up the animating staff before making Princess and the Frog.

Yes, it's every bit as awesome as the name implies. And yes, in the preview image he's using a chainsaw.
