Despite not being able to be useful in one, I like the jets. Mainly because it's awesome whenever one flies by just above you or crashes nearby.
I kinda wish wreckages wouldn't disappear while there are players close. Mainly because one time I was using a tank wreckage as cover when it suddenly disappeared and I got killed, but also because it looks weird when stuff suddenly disappears.
I can't get over how immersive the game is. The movement and animations just feel so RIGHT.
Really? The animations are buggy as hell. And I know..."beta, bro!" but still. The fact that people are dropping prone and clipping through walls is lame, even for beta. The way they've been pimping their animation and work they got from the FIFA guys, I'd expect basic clipping to be a thing.
Also, I cross my fingers for an auto-mantle feature while I'm sprinting. Seriously, sometimes I have to press space just to hop over a cinder block. Brink lives on, damnit!
The most immersive aspects of the games in my opinion are the graphics, and sound which are fantastic. The animations are rather mediocre, even with me ignoring the fact that they obviously didn't hire a competent consultant.
What, are you serious? I can't even think of another game that comes close to the realism and fluidity of BF3's animations. Certainly not another FPS.

Yeah I love flying the jets but I can never seem to do much with that puny chaingun. A 360 controller makes you basically untouchable in the sky though.
whats the point of the heavy barrel other than with a bipod? "increased accuracy" seems to be useless when combined with the increased vertical climb of your shots

I think the best use of the jets is close air support. Especially in a well organized group, it is tremendously satisfying to have one of your guys scream for backup over the mic and for you to be able to put some rounds on a building right as they're about to rush it.
Really, if you want to support your team in a plane rather than be the pointswhore or whatever, you should be circling the battlefield awaiting orders from a competent guy on the ground.
When this game launches I can see my enjoyment going up tenfold when I get back into clanmatches. Proper force deployment has been a staple of BF since 1942.

Maybe I just haven't gotten the hang of it but I am so bad at strafing ground targets. I wish the jet had dumbfire missiles like the chopper at least I can hit with those.

Makes your gun much more accurate in single shot mode. Slap it on an M16 with a foregrip and ACOG and go to town on snipers.

You really have to keep in mind that the jets are fairly realistically implemented. In that they are travelling at hundreds of kilometers per hour. You need to lead targets a huge amount, and give yourself an enormous run up. Those things are agile but can't turn on a dime. Oh, and if you don't kill people with a strafe, don't worry. The collateral shock and the environment destruction are still useful, and as long as you stay alive, you will always be another threat for the enemy to keep an eye on.
When you're not coming in for a run, or tackling enemy aircraft, you should be in the stratosphere, scraping the skybox. There is no reason to be lower, as you can hit the deck in five seconds with these planes whenever you are needed.
Strafing doesn't work very good. Choppers and jets have very very little splash damage, so you have to hit troops dead on to be anything effective. Might be fixed, I dunno.
Last night I was being chased by a chopper, he hit 4 missiles right next to me, no less than a foot away from me. Sure, my vision got all blurry and stuff, but I still had 100% health. It felt dumb really.

I'm also pretty sure that a jet gun firing close to infantry instantly suppresses them.
I find it hilarious that people still stand around waiting for jets to respawn. Not once have I jumped in a jet from the ground - spawning in one and leaving a squabbling cluster of fools in the dust never gets old.
I've had so much damn fun on Caspian Border. Sure, it's not the scale of some of the BF2 heavyweights, but the size feels good. I've spent countless rounds dedicated to different roles and areas on the map, and it's never felt stale or overly predictable. The perpetual dogfighting above the battlefield is just awesome.
I can look past the numerous glaring bugs when the combat handles, looks and sounds as good as this.

Sure, let's make animations take as long as it does in real life for a full laden soldier with a gun (And SMAW on his back!) to go from prone to standing to running, I bet it will be loads of fun!
It's called Arma.
And it actually is fun... once you learn to stop trying to circle strafe.

But you see, if the enemy were good, while your vision was blurry, or while you were looking up at the aircraft, or doing any number of other, distracting things like trying not to get crushed by a collapsing building - well that's the time when some guy runs up to you on the ground and blows you away. And if they were really good, it would be while five guys run up to you en route as a team to the objective.
The mistake everyone makes with Battlefield games, and have done since 1942, is thinking the armour and aircraft are the tip of the spear. Troops on the ground have been and still are utterly essential and should be augmented with supporting vehicles, not the other way around. It sounds like silly jingoistic posturing but that's simply how the game is balanced. Vehicles are fragile, ponderous and highly visible. Jets even more so. Troops aren't.
I can't get over how immersive the game is. The movement and animations just feel so RIGHT.

Which animations are realistic? The way most characters move from the third person perspective looks no different than most other FPSs of the past 5 years.
Most of the animations regarding players interacting with weapons are very inaccurate, but I've given up hope of ever playing a realistic FPS so it's a nonissue for me.
Sure, let's make animations take as long as it does in real life for a full laden soldier with a gun (And SMAW on his back!) to go from prone to standing to running, I bet it will be loads of fun!
The speed of those animations aren't as unrealistic as you might think.

So this excuses there being no animations for dropping to prone? I'm not asking for realism, I'm asking for something less jarring than people rotating 90 degrees in the blink of an eye. Someone asked why we didn't like the animations, there's our objection.
Edit: This video footage is what made me realize how piss-poor the animations are in the beta. They're animations of, well, BF3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXaFw7aC9GE
Skip to 1:40. The guy talks about how there's a sense of mass and momentum, you can really tell the way things are moving. All of that looks pretty different from what I see in the beta, which makes me think that either it's just "Beta, bro!" or "Singleplayer, man." In either case, after having them pimp that footage, I can't say I'm impressed with the animations in this game. It's still very pretty though, don't get me wrong.
That video's worth watching if you haven't already, and not just because of that really cute blonde.
Yeah, seriously, there is nothing special about the animations. For one thing I hate having to vault awkwardly over every little obstable rather than being able to just quickly hop.
Also, the collision detection is shit; like having to jump to go through already cut down wire panels or getting caught on small bits of rubble.
This issue also applied to BC2 at the start, so hopefully it'll get better.

Now don't you be telling ME that ARMA 2 is or isn't fun!!
I love ARMA 2, but not for everyone. If I want to be tactical sure, but sometimes I want simple fun, like in BF3.
I was really impressed by the animation the first time I saw a guy run around a sharp corner and slide into a spot next to me. The way he angled himself for balanced and then slid into place just looked very realistic to me. I like how they lean into turns a lot.
But yeah, there are a lot of issues with it as well. I'm not a fan of the clipping in this game. It's REALLY easy to get caught on the tiniest stuff. A tank should roll over a downed tree with no problem.
I think it's pretty stupid that you have to unlock countermeasures and missiles. I really need to jump into the game at release or I'll get raped every time I get into the air.
It also seems like the AA stationary miniguns are useless. By the time you start to get a bead on a plane the barrels overheat. Something I'm missing?

You have to figure out how far to lead them. But yeah, not really that useful given the very limited angles the stationary emplacements have.
If anyone has tried both and can comment, how do the jets compare to the planes in Battlefield 1943? I'm hoping similar.
Jets are faster, I also found the 1943 planes to be easier to control but thats probably because Im playing BF3 on PC.
Is it much harder to kill ground targets as a result? In 1943 a skilled pilot could really rack up the ground kills if allowed to go unmolested.
The jets have much, much more powerful weaponry. So it's actually a lot easier to kill troops on the ground (you'll basically one shot everything). Plus, you can destroy buildings and murder ten dudes at once. Don't forget that environment destruction is actually not just eye candy here, the planes wreck shit in BF3 and that can open up paths, block routes and hinder defences.
However, as was said, they are jets. They're much faster. More nimble and responsive, sure, but also supersonic. A moment's hesitation when lining up a shot can have you fly over the target and half a mile past them in the blink of an eye. What you need to do is enlarge everything by five or ten times. Turning circles need to be bigger, dips and drops need to be gauged because you can gently swoop over things in 1943 while in this you will plummet at a thousand feet a second and put a hole in the Earth in the same time. You need to be much higher most of the time, because the loops you are making are a mile high and the spins you are pulling and the twists you are making are huge, arcing paths hundreds of metres long.
Basically, everything is faster. Turning, flying; all at the very least twice as quick as 1943. But the maps are equally as enlarged, so you have plenty of space. But when attacking non-moving targets (like ground infantry, not other jets) you will scream past them in half the time. No more loopzooking or any of that. You need to give yourself half the map to line up a strafe, I'm not even kidding.
Of course, you can just use jets as anti-air and it's about as comparable. Everything else is moving quicker so relative differences are unchanged. Go spend an afternoon playing Ace Combat or Hawx and you've basically got it down.
The jets in BF3, or the ones I've played around with in the beta, are much different than the ones in previous BF titles. Which was annoying because I was really fucking good in BF2.
