Unpaid Betatesting II: This Time Its Final.
I can't even make it run in a full-screen mode, and the in-game options menu for graphics does not actually works.

Apparently for whatever reason (dunno if developer or valve's fault due to closed beta run on steam) a way older build than the release build was put up as the final version and a new version is being put up now.
it is bizarre how the in game graphics options don't work, but eh, I just bought it from greenman and it was only 32$ and they gave me the dlc despite not preordering it, so i can live with some launch bugs.

I hoped that was the case.

Yeah, for those who are thinking about turning on their PCs at home and downloading this, wait. The version online right now is almost completely unplayable. Well, I mean, you can play it and stuff happens but you'll have no idea what anything does or what you should do. The version they uploaded is clearly some 'barebones' internal beta with all flavor text and tooltips removed. I for example, can build a 'Camel' on one of my ships. I can select between 'Camel', 'Semper Fi', Sagitarius', and 'Reflux Generators' for the option for that slot. I went with Camel.

Apparently its 6 months old. Hopefully all that crunchtime working on it means that the actual release build is considerably better.

From a guy from the development team on the paradox forums:
People feared we would essentially be paying play a beta. Right now it looks like we paid to play what should have been an alpha while they work to bring us the "real" version.
Apparently Steam released the Initial Oct 14th beta build instead of the release build. per Sword of the Stars twitter they are in the process of correcting this. Steam should auto-update to the new version once the upload is done.

I'm playing with the old version as humans. I'm looking at the tech tree, then playing with the premade ship designs. Then I see that I can make a drone carrier. I start looking at other ship classes.
The first ship I see beyond cruisers is called a "torpedo node fighter." It's a tiny, sub-destroyer size ship, carrying a plasma torpedo launcher.
I'm in love.
Edit: I think it has in-system FTL as well!
Edit 2: the mission system is taking some getting used to, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I like how you can save build orders to a favorites list.

If that build is only two weeks old, I'm a long way from filled with confidence. I suspect that we're going to be subjected to a great deal more sighing and eye rolling on the part of the devs, to the effect that its some nerve for us to expect games to arrive on time and in a playable state, and anyway its not their fault its steams fault and don't you know how lucky we are, that people as smart as they are are willing to even let people like us look at their products.
But hey, by next spring, we might well have a playable, enjoyable product.

How about this.
The game is not done.
Would you look at that! Almost a shame, I was working on a pretty good rant.
Awesome.
Also everyone should get in the steam group chat right now.
You say this like it's a problem?

That and some people were claiming it had been pushed back 5 hours?

I can't even make it run in a full-screen mode, and the in-game options menu for graphics does not actually works.
The above post is one example why, especially when I read that the first game was full of bugs and issues when it first came out too.
I hoped that was the case.
"And we will call it... 'This Land'" achievement put a smile on my face
I considered the Reflux Generators, but decided I could generate additional reflux in the crew by feeding them only spicy foods right before bed.
Ha, one of the weapons I can choose from is "Protean_medium_B" fear my mighty placeholder names.
Oh, and building my science station is giving me +5 Ect per turn. Very useful indeed I feel.
The graphics are also confusingly weird, my Protean_medium_B fires a white puff of pixelated mess, conversely my green lasers fire a red beam.
Here's to hoping the update hits this week!

I guess I can like...start playing....yeah...

Not sure what to make of this.
just wtf is this game?
It looks like SOTS...but...it's...weird....

Question is how long is the upload gonna take.

Really, really neat!
This is keen!
Cause it feels like I just wasted my money...
The real version should be out in a few hours. It's a rocky start, but that isn't too much of a surprise really.
