I drive a Nissa Xterra and would use this as a combo car/bike commute, so I fancy the idea of a more permanent rack that I can leave on pretty much all the time.
It doesn't really fit without removing a wheel and putting the seats down, and even then its a pain in the ass. I really hate the storage design of my car.

yea hitch is way sturdier. unless you have a spare tire you could mount it too as well. also depends on how nice a bike you are toting around. if it was high end i would look into a roof mounted system personally
Any thought into roof top style racks? Might be a little high on an Xtera, but if you're tall it's not a big deal.
Between the hitch and trunk type, definitely get the hitch. I have yet to use a trunk one that hasn't been a huge pain in the ass or hasn't ruined some of my paint.
Seriously consider a roof rack if you've got a high end bike. Any kind of fender bender is going to annihilate your bike, and that's going to seriously sting if you've sunk several grand into the bike.
My bike was about 400, its a pretty basic hybrid. Roof would be nice, but the Xterra is a tall mothergoosin truck. There is no way a roof rack is going to happen.
Hitch type it is!
Would insurance coer a bike damaged in a rear end collision?
Would insurance cover a bike damaged in a rear end collision?
I'm thinking it would fall under the realm of property damage.
If your car insurance doesn't cover it, chances are your home owners/renters will. Double check with the insurance rep, obviously. But if my cell phone or laptop was stolen or damaged in my car, my renters would cover it and often has a lower deductible.
not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

What I meant by property damage was like how when someone crashes into and their insurance has to replace any cds or whatever that got broken inside your car as a result of the accident. I'd assume that a bike in a bike rack would be covered under the same principle.

if not, here's a few recommendations from my car forum (Honda Element):
