Help i was just scammed on Craigslist

So i went to buy an iPhone 4S or what i thought was a 4s and turned out to be a 4 jailbroken and modified to say 4S. I contacted the guy that sold it to me i am in Vancouver CAN. he is in Victoria i paid $650 and he said that he was sorry felt bad apologized. He also said he would come back to the Vancouver on the Nov 16; he said he didn't know what came over him and all this, I guilted him and now seems sincere and said he would call me and pay me back.

So should i believe this guy? I mean I want to believe him but the truth is there is nothing really that I can do but believe him. I have his number/email and thats about it.

How was it modified to say 4S? Was there no packaging? I think that would be a really obvious dupe. You are never hearing from this guy again, I can guarantee that. Call the police and give them all the information you have.

Well you probably paid retail value for what a new 4S would cost...that seems incredibly risky for a Craigslist thing. Just FYI for the future.

This is why you look carefully over what you buy. When I sold my 3GS, I made sure to open the box and show off the phone a bit. Mostly the casing and such to prove it was indeed a 3GS.

Each iteration of the iPhone has distinct features that you should always be looking for.

The 4s is the only one with a mic above the earpiece so you can use siri, it is a visual difference that is easy to identify.

You can also check the back of the phone for the model number.

I would be surprised if you got your money back honestly. And I hope this serves as a huge lesson when dealing with any form of online ads. You should file something with the police. This will help track things in case this guy done it before, or incase thsi dude decides to make a career out of it.

Hopefully it was iphone 4s 32gb you were trying to buy for $650, and not the 16gb...

For your information, you can physically tell the iPhone 4S apart from the iPhone 4. The 4S has two black bands on the antenna on the side with the sim card slot; there's one black band near the bottom and one near the top. The iPhone 4 (the GSM model sold in Canada) has only one black band below the sim card slot.
