Man, am I excited about this release! Especially since the original MSX games are getting included. I've got my Amazon preorder squared away, though I admit I'm sad they're not doing a release-day delivery. It probably won't get to me until the 15th, according to them. Oh well.

I'm hoping this finally inspires me to finish Peace Walker. For some reason I got about waist-deep into that game, and then just didn't want to turn on my PSP anymore. I heard a rumor that there would be a way to import Peace Walker saves from the PSP to the PS3, and perhaps even export the PS3 save data to the PSP. Is such a thing true? Or will I need to start the campaign over from the beginning?

Peace Walker beats all of your numbered games because they all lack the Human Slingshot. :P

Kidding aside, I'm kind of torn about PW. I have a rocking save already, but if I really want to get all the achievements and stuff I'll have to start over. I mean, it's a fun game and all and I probably won't mind doing it again, but having to rebuild my army is going to be kind of lame, especially with all the excellent troops I've found.

I just realized that too, that it says the shipping date isn't release day. :(

Yeah, I guess MGS HD wasn't popular enough to get release date delivery. I view this as a good thing though...

I've got Skyrim, CoD and Saints Row all within a week!

Transfarring. I think if you want to unlock all the trophies, you'll have to start a new save. If you don't care about that, I guess you could run with your existing save. But no retroactive trophy unlocks, I believe.

But yeah, basically you transfar (ugh) your data from one system to the other, then you can continue to play/unlock trophies then transfar back to the other system. I guess that's one bonus to having a PSP; you can still do troop recruitment while you're out and about, and maybe net some cooler soldiers faster that way.

Unfathomably awful work hours combined with too much goddamned snow for me. Going to the store is both a pain, and freaking scary lately. I'll let the mailman be the brave one.

I never did get to see the Document, I'd love if that were included (sigh)

However I never got to do the Snake Tales or Alternative Missions (what are Alternative Missions, exactly?)

No Secret Theater in MGS3 is a shame!

Picking this up tomorrow from GameStop, but probably won't even get a chance to play it until Thursday or Friday

The alternative missions are basically a bunch of VR missions that take place within the tanker or big shell, instead of in VR-land. There's a bunch of them, and they can be pretty great.

You play as different characters for different missions, and the missions range from stuff like freezing bombs to holding up guards to taking pictures. There are some good challenges in there, and (iirc) everything has time limits with Gold/Silver/Bronze rankings.

Alternative Missions are basically weird VR Missions that take place in the normal game environments instead of the VR ones.

If I remember correctly, there's Hold Up mode, where you have to hold up every guard in the area, Photo Mode, where you have to take photos of specific things, and Bomb Disposal mode, where you have to use the coolant spray to freeze bombs.

    They're pretty great.

    They tried that

It didn't work out too well

i kinda would just like twin snakes except with the original voice acting/cutscenes bumped up to the new textures

don't mind too much that the MGS2 controls/camera made it a bit too easy, just prefer the more grounded storytelling and original VA*
even though some of the rerecorded dialog is much better, figure i'd rather just have the original voice to go with the original storyboards

Japan didn't have Transfarring in the collection because Peace Walker wasn't included. Peace Walker itself got Transfarring. Since we get PW in the Collection, we get transfarring too..... I think?

Shoot, now lemme go look this up to make sure.

edit: Yeah, there's mention on their Facebook page about transfarring Peace Walker, so I guess it's in.

I love me some MGS2 but it is definitely the worst in the series

MGS1/3 Have a much stronger narrative

    MGS4 has much better gameplay

    MGS3 has better characters

    MGS1 has a better setting

The only thing I feel MGS2 has to offer above the others is that fucking kick-ass soundtrack and the best intro area of the bunch

The tanker section is fucking sublime and I will fight anyone who says otherwise

I just recently played MGS4 and I didn't really like it... at all.

MGS3 will always be the pinnacle of the series.

I agree with you about the tanker, Tasteticle. It's unbelievable how perfect it is.

So like, is there actual hands-on proof that Peace Walker controls right and proper now? At best like 4 and at worst like 3? That old cynicism nerve is acting up, wondering if they didn't bother remapping the controls. I'd be right and utter pissed if I bought the game and found out they did that.

    Yeah

I don't know what this "improved gameplay" people tout is all about

It plays like a shittily-handling third-person shooter. The options for stealth felt like such afterthoughts that I can't believe they put an in-game reward in for doing no-alert runs

A lot of this may be to blame on the 3D Subsistence camera (which sucks and should burn in Hell)

    My thoughts as well.

MGS4 had solid gameplay (for the first two acts) and a large selection of weapons...but the entire game just started to fall apart for me after a while.

I haven't played PW despite having a PSP. I'm glad I waited since I thought it would've been better on a console.

    Bull hockey.

I'd prefer they just remake MGS2, maybe to cut down on Raiden's whining a bit.

This is the quote in question:

“However, as you know, Metal Gear Solid 1 was for the PSone. It has a very, very low polygon count. While at the time the game was something new and refreshing, just bringing it as is into HD probably wouldn’t have that much meaning to us.

“We’re doing two and three with a certain work flow where the goal is to take that game, preserve it and introduce it to a new generation. We can’t really take that approach with Metal Gear Solid 1 because it’s very dated at this point.”

So instead of just updating the resolution of the PSone classic -- which, let’s be honest, wouldn’t really improve the graphics at all -- Kojima Productions is looking into doing a fully-fledged remake, complete with updated gameplay and tweaked story beats. Matsuhana says it would be different enough to be considered a re-imagining instead of a remastering.

“If we were going to do Metal Gear Solid 1 we’d want to take more time with it. Not just up-res the textures, not just make things look pretty and polished, but go back and tweak some of the gameplay, tweak the story to update things and do it properly,” explained Matsuhana. “Not just a re-master but a re-imagining almost.”

Let us not forget that this was practically done back in 2004 when Konami released Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes on the Nintendo Gamecube. The game was an updated take on the original MGS story, full of cutscenes making excessive use of bullet time. However, it’s worth noting that Twin Snakes was not handled by Kojima Productions, but was instead developed by Silicon Knights. Maybe this latest MGS re-imagining is Kojima Productions’ way of reclaiming their baby, sprucing it up, and delivering it to the world the way they originally envisioned."

Seems more likely than an FFVII remake at any rate.

    VR Missions
    Snake Tales
    Alternative Missions
    Casting Theater

    Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance

    3D Camera
    Metal Gear
    Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

    Missing Features

    Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

    Skateboarding

The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 (Although a separate title, it was with Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance in Europe)

    Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance

    Metal Gear Online (MGS3)
    Snake vs Monkey
    Secret Theater
