NA PSP version of Peace Walker will be compatible with the Vita after the PSN update later today.

Finally. Though I've already downloaded it through my PS3 months ago.

Does this include the fancy controls and graphics upgrade the PS3 version has? Or just the bog standard PSP version.

Because I can't in good conscience recommend that version with the horribly dumpy controls. I think I have PTSD from those controls...

It's the PSP version, but you can remap some of the controls.

So, I currently have Metal Gear Solid on PSN, HD Collection and Metal Gear Solid 4.
I can't decide if I want to play them in release order, or chronological order. :P

I grew up watching my Dad play the first 2 Metal Gear Solids, and caught glimpses of my younger brother doing his run through of 3, so I had a pretty good handle on what was going on during my playthrough of MGS4, but still, goddamn. Where have these games been my whole life?

I have a rager for stealth games, as well as third person shooters, and it's safe to say I'm in love. I just beat
    Crying Wolf in Shadow Moses
and the flashbacks brought back nostalgic memories to both Old Snake and myself.

Kojima is a master of atmosphere.

    Manly tears were shed.

    That is all.

Just had a weird codec with Wolf
Raiden asked him if he'd heard of "Gubayama" and Wolf said it might mean mountain or a sumo wrestler. Raiden had heard it "from an AI"

    What's he talking about?

This is a reference to MGS2, towards the end of the game.

    It is?
    (wait DarkRavenX don't read this)
I just assumed it was because apparently Armstrong was trained in sumo wrestling (taking the sumo stomp pose before the fight and everything), and "Governor-yama" would be shortened to "Gov-yama," then corrupted to "Gubayama" because the v sound doesn't exist in Japanese. But then, that's the kind of crap I deal with all day, so I'd expect things to chain together like that.

    It is.
Raiden makes reference to "The Colonel". There has only ever been one instance in which "The Colonel" "AI" "Gubayama" and "Shibomnigee" ever come together.

That's crazy. Was that a Japanese only codec call in MGS2? I don't remember it at all.

I posted the exact quote just after him, if you are interested. A few posts up.

I have bought two PSPs because of Metal Gear games. I have also sold two PSPs because, oh my God my hands

Thank goodness for the PS3 HD version of Peace Walker. Though I honestly wonder what kind of lunatic would trudge through that infinite slog of bullet sponge bosses. For a series that has always had such great, defining encounters... What the fucking fuck is this? Maybe there's some magic gun someplace that solves all my problems, or maybe they expect you to get online to accomplish anything with any efficiency.

Game is aces other than that, though.

    Just finished the game. (Rising)

I don't know why I torture myself by always picking hard mode in slasher/action games. That final boss fight was beyond brutal.

I think I need a cold shower. Awesome game, though.

Weird request here: wanting to confirm that I didn't pick up a bootleg copy of MGS4.

    So, after completing Revengeance, I decided to finally pick up the rest of the series so I ordered the cheapest, new copy on the amazon.co.uk marketplace. While I was hoping for a first edition PAL copy, I received what I assume to be a Canadian Greatest Hits copy (even though Metal Gear Online has long been retired, I didn't like the idea of picking up a later printing it was completely excised from; I'm weird, I know). What was kinda weird was that the latest patch already seemed to be on the disc (despite being printed ostensibly before last year's 2.0 patch);

Being unfamiliar with PS3 games in general, never mind foreign copies, I'm keen on confirmation that my game's legit. Pictures are provided below. Note the multi-language packaging on the back; also, the multi-language manual only dedicates 13 pages of black-and-white pages to each language.

Unless I'm totally wrong, I don't think you can even bootleg a PS3 disc. All jokes aside with their security issues in the past, the PS3 is still a pretty secure machine if you got the latest firmware on it. That said, a definitive way to check is to flip the disc over and make sure the inner ring is embossed with the PS3 logo.

If they're still printing brand new copies, it makes sense to update the disc and packaging. Being a Canadian copy I found the Spanish translation on the box initially odd, but a quick check of my MGS HD box has Spanish on it too, so I guess it's a thing Konami is doing.

Otherwise, looks completely fine to me.

Yeah, all the serials/barcodes/logos are present on the inner ring of the back of the disc. And it boots/installs and plays just fine. Guess my paranoia's getting the better of me.

Playing through MGS1 that I downloaded from PSN, I actually freaked out when Psycho Mantis told me I liked Castlevania because I had totally forgotten about my Symphony of the Night save on my virtual memory card from where I downloaded it from PSN years ago.

I've never played 3 or the PSP games, or 4. Because I don't really care about Big Boss, and I don't like what happened to Snake in 4, but I'm thinking of going ahead and at least playing 4. Because, why not.

  • TransporterTransporter Registered User regular
Play 3 for the love of god.

They didn't make 3 because it was Big Boss fanservice, it's HILARIOUSLY integral, and MGS 4 makes about 75% less sense without it.

  • skeldareskeldare Gresham, ORRegistered User regular
Seriously. Since you can find MGS3 on just about every modern console/handheld there's no excuse.

MGS 1 and MGS 3 are the best standalone games in this series. You can play and enjoy either of them without needing to know anything else because it's all explained within the game itself. You are doing yourself a disservice by skipping 3.

MGS3 is a great game, not just a great Metal Gear game.

I've recommended it to several people who expressed an interest in MGS and had never played any of them.

MGS3 is quite possibly easily one of the best games ever made. Don't skip it.

For real, son! Get on that!

GameInformer had a good write up once about most important characters of the decade. The Boss made the list, and they made a good arguement that even though she was introduced late in the series, she is the single most important character in the whole series. The keystone the ties the foundation of the story together.

Also, MGS3 is just flat out one of the best games ever made.

I will cop to not giving much of a shit about MGS3 leading up to it's release. I wasn't too enthusiastic about the setting or Naked Snake as a character.

I was into it by the end of Virtuous Mission, and at the end of the game I was ready to call it the best of the series.

    And then I played MGS4!

    Oh brilliant

    I would agree with that.

The Boss is easily the most important character that ever appeared in an "off main series" installment of a vidja game franchise. If this was an RPG people would use the word "World Building".

Well she builds all of it. The whole thing. The whole fucking world.

God dammit. I need to go buy the HD collection. Quick, PS3 or 360? Is there a reason to get one and not the other? I guarantee it's been discussed in here already, but lolsearching.

The only difference is the pressure sensitive face buttons on the controllers. I think, anyway.

PS3 for pressure sensitive buttons in MGS2&3, definitely.

I can attest to the games playing just fine on a 360 controller. It's just a matter of preference. Like, if you want to experience the games exactly like you did on PS2, I'd go PS3.

Thanks, that's actually exactly what I was looking for. I completely forgot about the pressure-sensitive controls. PS3 it is. I'll be picking that up this weekend (if I can find a copy).

Blah. Drive ten miles away to a store I'm not familiar with to use my gift card at GameStop and get it for cheap or drop $30 for it at Target on my way home from work tomorrow when I get paid? Oh, the things I'll do for games I've already played (except Peace Walker and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake).

Ignoring the fact that 3 is a bloody awesome game in its own right, MGS4 is very much a sequel to it in every way. Not playing 3 will seriously have you confused as fuck during large parts of 4.

At the very least watch a Let's Play of it. But playing it is much better. :)

I very much doubt Ocelot knew who the Boss was to him.

As for the Boss knowing who Ocelot was... my gut reaction is to say "no". But it could go either way with how it's played.

Boss knows he's her kid. Hence the slap down for acting like a dick. I don't think it's ever explicitly stated Ocelot knows Boss is his mother though.
