So I've made the plunge. Never played a elder scrolls game before, mostly cause by the time I had something that could run it I lost the lust for it. Dragons and a norther looking land has me sold so I preordered.
Thing is are there huge mechanic things and/or story/lore things that I should read about that would help immensly when starting/running into this thing blind?
And random question is there a way to make it so you get a email response if a thread you've posted in when someone else posts? Its been like 8 years since I've touched forums lol.

Do the skills in Skyrim do anything themselves? I know you need certain skill levels for perks and that advancing your skills levels makes you level up allowing you to choose a perk, but are they used in, say, damage calculation for their respective weapons like they were earlier?
I don't believe so. They're more or less for leveling and perk requirements.

Skyrim's RPG system is built around gradual choice. At the beginning you only select your race and appearance. Everything else can be done through doing whatever you like, so you shouldn't have any issues. As far as story goes, all the TES games are pretty much standalone, save for a few references here and there. If you want to read up on the lore, UESP is a good place to go, but it won't be required to work stuff out.
With prices like $40 I feel like a tool for essentially paying $20 more than I have to just for that gamestop exclusive cloth map. I hope it's cool. I'll take a picture of it with the Septim I got from the Oblivion CE for maximum Elder Scrolls nerd points.
Hate to break it to you, but if a Skyrim CE unboxing I saw is any indication it's one of those glossy paper maps.

I'm almost certain that they actually act like skills, perks acting like, well, perks.
That doesn't sound correct at all for skills to not have any effect beyond granting exp and opening up perk paths. That would mean a level 10 sneak is as bad as a level 80 sneak if you don't invest perks in it, which is pants-on-head stupid.
I'm far more inclined to believe that skill levels are used for under the hood calculations like damage, damage mitigation, success rates, etc., while the perks are true bonuses.

Exactly..I'd be really surprised if that wasn't the case.
Someone with an Archery skill of 90 should do loads of damage with a bow compared to someone with a skill of 20...the perks just offer additional specilization.

For the people who don't like essential NPC immortality, you could change that in Oblivion by editing a couple of lines in the ini file, so I wouldn't be surprised if the same applies to Skyrim. Can't remember exactly what you need to edit but it's easy to find on google. Unfortunately I doubt it would let you know the guy you'd just killed was important so fucking up your game would be a very real possible.
Having said that there was a mod for Oblivion that made it work like Morrowind and I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before someone makes one for Skyrim.
While it hasn't been confirmed for this game re: skills, I can't see why it'd change from previous games. In Oblivion (I don't recall Morrowind and earlier) if you had a steel sword (let's say) you saw completely different stats if you had 10 skill in it versus 100. Damage on weapons and defense on armor increased (with higher value stuff having much higher potential stats) as your skill in those items increased.

Yeah, every physical copy of the game comes with a glossy paper map, but in addition, as a pre-order bonus you also get a fancy cloth map.
I did skip the part of his LPs where he was doing main quests, and at the beginning of that specific video he did say that he was going to do sidequests..but then he walks up to the Companions, this really cool thing happens and I can't stop watching and then I see one of the dialogue options when he's talking to one of the Companions and I'm like
Still, it did seem like you find that out really early in their quest line so I guess it's not that bad..and I was never really interested in
Will a quad core be necessary for this game to run smoothly, I can't decided between xbox and pc?
My PC meets recommended specs except for the quad core. I currently run a 3.0 ghz dual core. I have been leaning more towards xbox, but after reading a bit about texture pop in I can't decide. It would almost certainly be a PC purchase if I knew for sure it wouldn't chug on my computer.
Don't think anyone besides Bethesda knows at this point.
I just hope I can get a halfway decent framerate on my laptop..and that said laptop doesn't overheat too quickly. Playing Skyrim in 45 minute bursts yaaaaaay!

No where does it say cloth map. Every first run copy of the game (not specific to Gamestop or anyone) comes with a Premium Physical Map.
Update: We’ve received plenty of questions about the map. So you know, it’s a high-grade material that has a feel similar to burlap, and will be available in North America and European territories. There will be a regular paper map included in all copies of the game, but if you want to get the premium map, we recommend pre-ordering the game.
So it sounds like it may be a high quality paper map that feels like burlap.
At the price of 34.99, I want to buy this. I want to believe in that intkey place. I should! I should. Because Paypal scam stuff has always been good to me.

I just checked on systemrequirementslab.com, and it seems that my computer passes even the recommended stuff.
Hopefully I can run this on wtfstupid settings. Check the "pretty mode" box for the first time.
So many mans will be deaded on friday.

Can you make paper feel like burlap? I had no idea.
Can you make paper feel like burlap? I had no idea.
I think the burlap comment is some marketing spin. If you watch some of the unboxings on youtube you'll see it described as textured paper by a couple of different people. So its not the cheap normal glossy paper map that rips down the seams easily but it also not cloth either.
They make it sound like you get two maps. One in the box and one premium one for being part of the preorder snazz. I'm going to guess it's cloth of some sort.
Chocobolicious is right. You get two maps if you preorder. One paper one that everyone gets that buys a hard copy of the game, and another "burlappy" one because you preordered.

After seeing those perk trees all drawn out....i think i spotted a little in my pants...
I want too many perks now. I think i'm going to try a stealthly thief/murder...until i can become a vampire. At which point more stealthly murder, less thiefing....yea, i have goals....kill everything NPC in the game, and either, leave them dead, or make them my bitch vampires, and rule the world....

There is a lot of misinformation out there about the map. You only get one map. All copies in the first production run have the premium map bundled inside them.

UESP wiki currently confirms my thoughts, and they're generally accurate.

I've just watched another random part of that Let's Play and got spoiled big on the Companions.
Apparently
Well he is going through the main quest and major side-quests, as well. Getting spoiled on something like that was inevitable.
I have an unhealthy addiction to click them when I know I don't want to see any spoilers.

Eh, it is not a big deal. I may stop watching before he gets too deep, though.

Same here. My second monitor will display a map, so I guess I'll be ok.

Also not having to leave the house. Also being able to preload. I'll be killing dragons by the time these lesser map owners get their box.
