I've been thinking about upgrading the router in my house for a bit now. The Cisco cheapo model I currently have drops signal constantly (compared to my old linksys that crapped out), and I have 3 other roommates that are now all starting to use their laptop's/Xbox's/other stuff. What do I need to look for in a router? Is there something off newegg that's a good deal? I might also be able to split the cost, so money shouldn't be much of an issue.
I am in a similar boat as well. I have a Cisco E3000 and loathe this piece of crap as much as it is possible to loathe a thing. I'd take a sledge to it for some emotional gratification but right now it is the only thing I have to network my house together.
To the point, I am also looking for a good Wireless N router that won't cause me as many headaches as the one I have now.

New model airport extreme from apple is pretty kickass.
It's expensive, but what you get is an easy to configure, crazy reliable box that will never drop signal on you.
And you do not need to be an apple house to make use of it. It is fantastic at handling my 360, my AppleTV, an iPad, two phones and a standalone computer all doing stuff at once, and no hiccups.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
The Netgear WNDR series are all pretty great. I believe the newest flagship model is the WNDR4500 (review). I've got the slightly older WNDR3700 and couldn't be much happier. It's rock solid performance wise* and the management interface is pretty nice without having to tweak anything.
*I do things like stream 1080i raw TV recordings over wireless to other computers. They clock in at 3GB/30 minutes of video. No stuttering in the playback at all.
I'm in the same boat but with another consideration: my current router is entirely fine except I am having range problems with my new apartment. I need to keep the router in the basement because that's where the cable modem is, and the bedroom is on the second floor and coverage is spotty. It's there most of the time but it breaks connection just enough to be annoying. What's a good, modern, ddwrt-compatable router that has good enough range?
