So one of the models for Sandy has it coming up the coast and hitting Vermont just like Irene did, which is very concerning for my neighbors and I. I mention it here because I also saw it would be bringing Nor'Easter conditions to western New York. Have fun with that, I guess. ;-)

Wasnt the issue that there was barely any precipitation last year?

Woo! Already snow on the ground in some parts of Ontario. I'm hopeful for a snowy winter season this year. Hopefully we don't get the drought we had from February onwards again this year.

I went to Whistler last year in Feb. and they hadn't had any snow in two weeks. I came all the way across the country to get away from bullshit fake snow and the mountain was hard packed snow :( January had some record snowfalls last year so I missed out on all the powder. It was very disappointing.

I really want to experience a full powder run. If we get good snow this year, I'm considering going back to BC again. Tremblant if not!

Timberline and some other Hood lodges should be opening soon. I see snow on the mountain fuckers, it's time to ski (they may already be open and I missed it).

Mountains, to god-damned hell with mountains! We have no mountains. In fact, we don't need mountains, you god-damned cabrón and chinga tu madre!

    I may enjoy nordic skiing.

Probably two to three hours. It's out by Enumclaw, so I'd have to go up I-5, and then east.

Also, I don't own a car, so unless there is Portland -> Crystal transport (which there probably is), I'd be out of luck. I take a banga bus up to Hood a couple of times a year, with a bunch of other snowboard jerks like me. Costs me like 15 bucks round trip.

Man the bus trips up to hood can get WILD when it's just us snowboarders. Brews being busted out mid trip is not entirely uncommon. It's only 45 minutes, but it has gotten pretty rowdy before. We tend to keep it more tame when we have a bunch of skiing families on the bus and stuff with us.

45 minutes is just ridiculous (ly awesome). I got a season pass to stevens this year and thats an hour and a half without traffic. I refuse to go to snoqualamie because the elevation is lower and it doesnt have as many blue runs. How often do you go up? This will be my second year and I'm planing on once a week for 4 months.

Usually two to three times a year. I have a kid which I have most weekends, and work five days a week, so I either have to take time off, or go on weekends when I don't have the munchkin....at least until she's six or seven, then she's going with me and falling on her ass until it's black and blue, just like I did to learn how to board.

And yes, I have my own board. I have a Burton Baracuda All-Mountain board, with Burton Mission Re:Flex bindings.

Not the best board in the world, but it's a great all arounder, and I got it at a decent price. I like that I can do some freestyle and downhill with it, it's got a nice camber and is good for the snow pack around here, which tends to be wet.

I have an Arbor Formula board but it's my first one so I dont really know how it compares to others. I'm still in the "might fall once or twice per run" phase on blue runs. It's funny how people talk about the expense of snowboarding but I got everything for about 1200 bucks and it's gonna last a while and it's the most fun you can have with gambling like adrenaline pump without gambling.

Yeah, my board, bindings, boots, parka, parka pants, goggles and helmet ran me right at 1400 or so?

And yes, with proper maintenance, a snow board will last for years. I have mine professionally stripped and rewaxed usually every other year.

As far as skill level, I'm at the point where I rarely fall down, and I can do 360's and stuff off the freestyle ramp. No flips or anything crazy.

I kind of want to try the park but I am also kind of adverse to people who aren't old enough to drink. And wear oversized basketball jerseys on the mountain.

It's not that bad, I'm an old fogey comparatively (33), and they don't bother me. Sometimes there is some friendly "get off my lawn youngins" ribbing, but that's no big deal. They are surprisingly respectful here, and really aren't trying to be crazy or hurt anyone.

Oh, and they are building a foam pit at Timberlines park, or so the rumor goes! I am stoked for that. I'll actually try some really crazy stuff in to a pit, like 720's and flips.

I'll have to give it a shot later this season after I'm in better shape and have my snow legs about me. I used to skateboard so some of that might come in handy...

  • GnomeTankGnomeTank What the what? Portland, OregonRegistered User regular
It will to a point. Obviously the very basic olley, kickflip moves of a skateboard won't help...but the ability to move your body in the air will, and if you ever learned to grind, that will help as the principle is much the same when grinding.

Just remember this when leaving the ground on a snowboard: Unlike a skateboard, if you hammer, the board doesn't just roll away...it's attached to you. You're bindings should break away, but possibly not before you have a broken ankle.

Silly knuckledraggers. Us skiers can drink too (though I do both, to be honest).

Last year in Tahoe we basically get 3 storms the whole year and it rained the week after each one. Mix that with constantly high temps and many sadfaces were had. Only one powday, despite notching 25+ days on the mountain.

Yeah, a buddy of mine was really disappointed last year, mostly because the precipitation was not there. He goes to kirkwood and they have 1000+ foot elevation over Northstar so there might have been more snow if it actually had any precipitation.

I'm also a kirkwood skier. It was depressing to see, as there were guys weedwhacking the ski slopes in January. Let us not speak of that though, and post stoke instead.

This was the one good day I skied last year:

Looks beautiful. One of my goals is to take more pics and videos if possible this year, especially when on the backside of Steven's. One of the mixed bags of Steven's Pass backside is that it has 2 lifts and pretty nice blue and black runs...but but the weather is fucking psychotic. like 20 mile an hour wind and freezing fog. It also gets sun on a bluebird day so it winds up turning to ice and being skiied off by mid day. Front side will be nice and calm and lightly snowing, backside will be white out.

oh hello thread i did not know you existed

i need to get better at snowboarding, though last year was pretty good for me, i did my first few days of dense glade riding at jay peak which was awesome

(2 years before that i f'd up my knee on one of those giant stunt air bag jump things so i took the '10-'11 season off, ugh, stupid knee)

i got a new board last year, but i still have been too lazy to fix the bindings with the replacement part they sent me, since a piece broke off on the last day of the season, prolly from grazing a tree... and i didn't wax the board an extra time at the end of the season out of laziness so i hope the base didnt dry out too much

There's snow on my balcony. But there's nobody to tell about it this year.

If anyone is looking into getting a new board this year, I highly recommend reverse camber.

Since I'm not huge into jumps anymore (hurt myself one too many times, hardpacked snow is unforgiving) I really enjoy doing manual tricks like tail/nose riding and 360's on flat ground. The flexibility and U-Shape makes doing those tricks A LOT easier since you're way less likely to catch an edge.

They're very floaty and will scare you at first if you're used to regular camber, but once you get used to it they're such a smooth ride. Going edge to edge feels like a dream. I've never enjoyed snowboarding more than when I got my '11 TWC Shaun White 154 and I've been at it for 15 years now.

I have an Arbor Formula board which has been a great entry level piece.

I got PTO for this Friday so I'm leaving at 6:00 AM to get on a bus for an hour, then hop in a car pool for another hour or so. So worth it for December snow.

Huh, seattle, portland, and kirkwood...I should have come over here sooner...

To anyone who was interested, Crystal claims to run a Portland shuttle bus along with the Seattle ones.

Was up there last weekend, and it was OK up top, but don't try to ride all the way in to the lodge because the bottom of the hill is dry.

I got an even better ride situation now. I'll be taking a bunch of pics on my phone because honestly I'll be exhausted by 2:30 and sitting on my butt.

Yeah, I was talking with Gnome about doing a Seattle Portland meetup of PA snow afficianados. Even though I have a season pass to Steven's I'd be more than happy to take a day at Crystal, especially mid season.
