Looks like Tahoe gets a real winter this year *fingers crossed*
I went to Whistler last year in Feb. and they hadn't had any snow in two weeks. I came all the way across the country to get away from bullshit fake snow and the mountain was hard packed snow January had some record snowfalls last year so I missed out on all the powder. It was very disappointing.
I really want to experience a full powder run. If we get good snow this year, I'm considering going back to BC again. Tremblant if not!
Mountains, to god-damned hell with mountains! We have no mountains. In fact, we don't need mountains, you god-damned cabrón and chinga tu madre!
I may enjoy nordic skiing.
Probably two to three hours. It's out by Enumclaw, so I'd have to go up I-5, and then east.
Also, I don't own a car, so unless there is Portland -> Crystal transport (which there probably is), I'd be out of luck. I take a banga bus up to Hood a couple of times a year, with a bunch of other snowboard jerks like me. Costs me like 15 bucks round trip.
EEEEEEEEEH!
oh yeah here is a sea to summit bus to crystal

Not the best board in the world, but it's a great all arounder, and I got it at a decent price. I like that I can do some freestyle and downhill with it, it's got a nice camber and is good for the snow pack around here, which tends to be wet.
And yes, with proper maintenance, a snow board will last for years. I have mine professionally stripped and rewaxed usually every other year.
As far as skill level, I'm at the point where I rarely fall down, and I can do 360's and stuff off the freestyle ramp. No flips or anything crazy.
Just remember this when leaving the ground on a snowboard: Unlike a skateboard, if you hammer, the board doesn't just roll away...it's attached to you. You're bindings should break away, but possibly not before you have a broken ankle.
"There are two positions in snowboarding... looking cool...and DEAD".
Last year in Tahoe we basically get 3 storms the whole year and it rained the week after each one. Mix that with constantly high temps and many sadfaces were had. Only one powday, despite notching 25+ days on the mountain.
Yeah, a buddy of mine was really disappointed last year, mostly because the precipitation was not there. He goes to kirkwood and they have 1000+ foot elevation over Northstar so there might have been more snow if it actually had any precipitation.
I'm also a kirkwood skier. It was depressing to see, as there were guys weedwhacking the ski slopes in January. Let us not speak of that though, and post stoke instead.
This was the one good day I skied last year:

i need to get better at snowboarding, though last year was pretty good for me, i did my first few days of dense glade riding at jay peak which was awesome
(2 years before that i f'd up my knee on one of those giant stunt air bag jump things so i took the '10-'11 season off, ugh, stupid knee)
i got a new board last year, but i still have been too lazy to fix the bindings with the replacement part they sent me, since a piece broke off on the last day of the season, prolly from grazing a tree... and i didn't wax the board an extra time at the end of the season out of laziness so i hope the base didnt dry out too much
I'm looking to go up this weekend. We're supposed to get 2 feet in the next few days.
Since I'm not huge into jumps anymore (hurt myself one too many times, hardpacked snow is unforgiving) I really enjoy doing manual tricks like tail/nose riding and 360's on flat ground. The flexibility and U-Shape makes doing those tricks A LOT easier since you're way less likely to catch an edge.
They're very floaty and will scare you at first if you're used to regular camber, but once you get used to it they're such a smooth ride. Going edge to edge feels like a dream. I've never enjoyed snowboarding more than when I got my '11 TWC Shaun White 154 and I've been at it for 15 years now.

I got PTO for this Friday so I'm leaving at 6:00 AM to get on a bus for an hour, then hop in a car pool for another hour or so. So worth it for December snow.
To anyone who was interested, Crystal claims to run a Portland shuttle bus along with the Seattle ones.
Was up there last weekend, and it was OK up top, but don't try to ride all the way in to the lodge because the bottom of the hill is dry.
Yeah, I was talking with Gnome about doing a Seattle Portland meetup of PA snow afficianados. Even though I have a season pass to Steven's I'd be more than happy to take a day at Crystal, especially mid season.
