I haven't played one since the original Red Baron. Is there anything out there currently that's worth looking into that has the same depth as that classic?

Red Baron 3D, and if you want some really nifty graphics, the Full Canvas Jacket fan mod. It's not free, but it's worth buying.

There's really nothing else out there. Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is a fun arcade type game, but is far less imbued with the sense of the Great War than Snoopy's appearances as the WWI Flying Ace in old Peanuts strips. There's no "Curse you, Red Baron!," no mad dash across no man's land, crawling under barbed wire while shells burst overhead and machinegun fire rips through the air, no Root Beer Hall, no French lasses, no "Ugh, I've been kissed by a dog! Get me iodine, get me penicillin!" smooches. Fun game, but it disappointed both the WWI aviation buff and the Snoopy fan in me.

Yeah, Red Baron 3d. Which has to be said, is actually Red Barron 2 with 3d Acceleration.

The dynamic campeign is great, once you realise that not every mission in real life ends with a 40 plane dog fight, but when they happen it's great.

Normally you'll do a patrol and if you run into annother german patrol you "have at it" and it's quite possible more machines will join the fray until it's and epic dog fight.

And kudos to shitty flight mechanics where you can fly with only one wing ;)

I just read up on the Red Baron 3D mods that are out there. They look pretty nice. I may have to track down a copy. Thanks!

I haven't tried it, but I saw a Flyboys game the other day in Gamestop. Apparently, it has a single player campaign and online play that's MMO. I don't know anything else about it, however.

Edit: I found a review and here's the conclusion: "The overall gaming experience with Flyboys Squadron and the TotalSims games is outstanding. The single player game is great fun with lots of missions and player options. The on-line play is lag free and the games run very smooth on the majority of mid to high-end computes. I highly suggest joining the TotalSims on-line community and seeing how much fun massive multiplayer air war can be."

Gamespot gave it a 3.5 out of 10. They also noted there are only 9 single player missions and the online component is practically deserted.

Isn't some Russian company doing a WW1 sim built on the IL-2 engine? I think i recall that anyway. I'd buy that.

Sweet! If there are a lot of flyable planes, a good flight model (should be... IL-2 kicked my ass), and some brilliant sound effects for gunfire, creaking wood, fuel-starved rotary engines, and rushing wind, I am SO there!
