VPN recommendations?

My current VPN access is about to expire, and as such I've been looking for a new provider to subscribe to. Mostly I rely on VPN for security when I'm traveling. I sort of refuse to connect to an Airport / Starbucks / Hotel network, or use my laptop wireless, without turning on VPN first. I'm not entirely sure what's available out there, or what's best, because I've been using an academic VPN service that will no longer be available to me and haven't had to hunt around before. Of course, my top priority is security and anonymity, but it'd be nice if the service were at least reasonably fast, as well. I'm also uncertain as to which VPN providers are reliable, and which might be considered 'shadey'.

Essentially, since I've no experience selecting and subscribing to a VPN service, I'd really like to hear what anyone recommends, or at least what people consider critical to look for in a provider.

Thanks in advance!

These are the two I have used

https://overplay.net/ (Used this summer for a few months)

http://www.acevpn.com/ (Used during the Winter olympics in Vancouver)

More for international website access than for security, they did everything I needed.

Thanks kindly, Jezo. AceVPN looks like a solid choice. I'll do some more research, but it looks like a good way to go. What was the speed like when you were using it, if you don't mind my asking?

Fast enough to stream video. I never did any large file transfers so I never saw an actual figure but the streams never buffered so I figure it is fast enough for regular day to day usage.

Also it's only $5.95 for a single month's use, so you can try them out before spending more on a longer discounted rate.

For anonymity and security I love to use encrypted tunnels, works with any browser, easy to install to mask my online activities and it's free to try 1 week

I have been using Fast VPN for the last year or so and I have been really happy with the service:

If you're on a Mac, Cloak is pretty aces. Automatically detects when you're on an insecure network and turns itself on (or you can turn it on manually)

I use strongVPN and have done so for the last 3 years. It works very well for me. I can stream Netflix in HD with no issues as well. They are very reliable, and the customer service was great the one time I needed it.
