Occupy movement thread that is not a joke title because it's getting confusing

Today is November 17th, or N17, aka The Occupy movement tries to step it up a notch with coordinated marches & rallies.

People were being checked for work IDs to be allowed into the subways, and press passes were still being turned away from Zuccotti Park due to police declaring it a "frozen zone". Worst injury so far, a kid was either kicking or moving a barricade, so he caught some club action to the head. I'd post a pic, but it's super bloody. As of 12:40pm (I'm guessing Eastern time) estimate was 200+ already arrested.

A former Philadelphia police captain who traveled up to support the protest was arrested today as well.

Some good video coverage here.
http://rt.com/news/ows-police-sound-canons-603/

In Portland, protesters traveled from bank to bank.
As many as 10 arrests were made when N17 protesters went inside a Wells Fargo bank building in downtown Portland today as part of Occupy Portland and N17 demonstrations.

Protesters were seen lowering an American flag and then raising it upside down. They also raised an Occupy the Banks flag. Once police made the arrests, the group marched on, and continued to other banks.

A sign at a nearby Bank of America branch says, "Due to circumstances out of our control, we are currently closed."

While the protesters have been disruptive, Portland police Lt. Robert King says there have been no acts of violence so far.

"We've been at this for a month and I think we've become increasingly proficient at managing these large-scale events," King says of the police bureau.

The march downtown followed a sit-in on the Steel Bridge during the morning rush hour where 25 people were arrested.

A rally in Seattle is blocking a major transit area, affecting several bus routes and with some worrying about a highway closure on the 520.
SEATTLE -- Occupy Seattle demonstrators expect to have 1,000 people march to the University Bridge Thursday afternoon as part of a national day of action demanding jobs, not cuts.

The protest will start with a rally at 3 p.m. in the plaza at the corner of Montlake Blvd NE & NE Pacific Street across from Husky Stadium. From there, protesters will march west on NE Pacific Street to the University Bridge.

The demonstrators are expected to block the bridge during the afternoon rush hour, likely causing traffic delays during the evening commute. There are also concerns they may block the Montlake Bridge.

In international news,
Syria is blowing the fuck up.
Army defectors in northwestern Syria -- armed with rocket-propelled grenades -- attacked a pro-government youth group office and clashed with Syrian security personnel Thursday, activist groups said.

Security forces also arrested dozens during raids in Harasta, the location of the air intelligence base outside Damascus that was attacked a day earlier by the Free Syrian Army, a band of military defectors confronting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The developments stoke fears that the violence will spread. The ongoing attacks on government buildings in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday, "look like a civil war."

someone on my facebook made the argument that OWS stopped reading the constitution after the first amendment (which they interpreted wrong) and then goes on to implore the NYPD to use excessive force

Well there ya go, it looks like a model 500X-RE, even.

    http://www.lradx.com/site/content/view/2054/110/

edit: Not sure if it is worth noting, but the product description for that specific model doesn't say anything about "deterrent tones" or crowd-control like some of the others.

While the protesters have been disruptive, Portland police Lt. Robert King says there have been no acts of violence so far.

I want to make something very clear about this.

This is the exact proper attitude I would like to see the police have about the Occupy movement. I just hope this guy can keep his nose clean so that it sticks.

    Oh wait, there we go:
The deterrent tone can reach a maximum of 149 dB (at one meter) to influence behavior or determine intent.

    My bad.

It's a waterless pressure hose. I didn't call it an atrocity. It's just an escalation.

Yeah, I was just trying to figure out what it was, in depth.

Apparently, the Maxabeam addon is just a fancy name for a searchlight, and you can also get one with a "Green Laser Dazzler". That sounds ominous.

Step 3 – If directions/instructions are not taken, operator employs the LRAD deterrent tone towards people/persons creating the threatening situation

*LRAD creates increased standoff and safety zones, supports resolution of uncertain situations, and potentially prevents the use of harmful or deadly force
*LRAD is equipped with a volume control knob. Unlike tear gas, tasers, rubber bullets, pepper spray and other non-lethal and lethal responses, LRAD can be modulated in response to actions of the target threat

They don't appear to be doing too much. Temprorary shutdowns of some bank branches and my only public transit home.

NEW YORK — Thousands of protesters are gathering near Foley Square in lower Manhattan as today's Occupy Wall Street "International Day of Action" continues.

Al-Jazeera English reporter Cath Turner estimates the crowd has swelled to around 10,000 people.

Traffic in the area is at a standstill, and a massive police presence has arrived.

Organizers are calling for a general assembly at Zuccotti Park at 7:30 p.m.

Marchers are pouring in from all directions. Chants of "shut the city down" can be heard.

At least a dozen mounted police units are patrolling the crowd, which as of around 6 p.m. began walking toward Broadway. Barricades line the streets, and some sidewalks are closed.

The sound of labor union tuba players can be heard.

Check back for more details as they become available.
