Sadly she's not fluent. There's no translation of F.S.R. anywhere else, so I had to make do. Are you interested in helping to revise it?

"Not fluent" suggests a level of proficiency close to fluency, when it's pretty apparent that this is reaaaaaaaaaaaally not the case.

I'll see if I have time later.

Well, she was able to romanize and have some idea of what was being said, which is a heck of a lot better than I could do.

That's worrisome, since she's the person helping us translate Moonlight Syndrome.

What the fuck? They clearly haven't the slightest idea of how Japanese grammar works. I'm not talking about how proficient or fluent someone is here, I'm talking the sort of basic fucking grammar they teach you one week into a JLPT4 course.

Here's an example of the level of bullshit in there

    朱に染め癒す朝は涙の花園に挿す

    Let's break that down

    朱に染め癒す朝は
The morning stained red (because dawn)

    涙の花園に挿す
Shining into a garden of tears

THE LIGHT OF DAWN SHINES INTO A GARDEN OF TEARS
    Simple, right?

    >Recover from the vermilion disease for the day
    >The garden’s tears lingering

    What in the actual fuck

I'm not a translator so this of course sounds horrible; Only half a translator's job is figuring out what something means, the other half is figuring out how to convey what it means. I tend to suck at the latter, in both directions (I sometimes cop out in Japanese and just go katakana eigo on people). But yeah for the most part that's what the lyrics actually mean as opposed to what someone using Google translate thought they meant.

Typically how my translation projects go is I have someone who's fluent(or at least damn good) at Japanese do the translation, then I edit it, and Esper hacks it.

Fun fact: the lead editor at Aksys doesn't know a word of Japanese. They use a similar process.

If you have decent enough people that process is good enough to make decent stuff, but will always fail at conveying nuances and such (which depending on what you're working on may or may not be really important) as long as it isn't the translator doing the editing.

All this talk of translation reminded me- There's an interview up on Dengeki Online (Japanese) about the translation process of Bravely Default
    - http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/000/778/778053/

And meanwhile on this side of the planet, incompetent translators are still being incompetent: There was a booth at komike with a demo of Saint's Row 4 on. Haven't played it but when the player does something, "STELLAR" pops up on the screen, right? The Japanese version has below that "stellar"... "恒星の"

I guess we should nip the concern in the bud:

    http://izzeybee.wordpress.com/2013/10/07/1-prologue-プロローグ/

Does this translation seem inaccurate as well?

    MIKA: …あんなのだったら (Anna no dattara)
もっと早く帰ってくればよかった (motto hayaku kaette kureba yokatta)
くだらないコンパなんかに誘いやがって (kudaranai KONPA nanka ni sasoi yagatte)
    カヅキの奴…… (Kazuki no yatsu)
    …I could’ve gone home earlier,
if it wasn’t for that stupid party
    Kazuki made me go to…

  • WeisskaiserWeisskaiser TokyoRegistered User regular

First of all- A konpa isn't really a party. It's more of a nomikai- People just going to some izakaya and getting drunk.
Second- Yep they have no idea how Japanese works at all.

Translation says if it wasn't for the "party" Mika could've gone home. What she's saying is that the konpa was horrible and she should've just gone home.

    Edit: Looking at the link
    MIKA: 悪いんだけど… (Waruin dakedo)
    全然興味無いし (Zenzen kyoumi nai shi)
    なにいってるわかんない (nani itteru ka wakannai)
結構迷惑がられてるの知ってる? (kekkou meiwaku ga rareteru no shitteru)
いい加減, 現実知ってさ~ (Iikagen, genjitsu shitte sa)
立派な大人になったほうが良くない? (Rippa na otona ni natta hou ga yokunai)
    友達いなくなるよ? (Tomodachi inaku naru yo)
って, もともといないか… (uTe, motomoto inai ka)
    Sorry to say this, but…
I have no idea what you’re talking about,
and I couldn’t give a rat’s ass what you’ve got to say to me.
I have enough troubles as it is, you know?
More than enough even, so reality check!
Nice grown-ups aren’t always so nice either, are they?
We’re also not going to be friends, are we?
See, it was all a waste of time…

"Sorry, not interested. You're a nuisance. Why don't you take a good look at reality and grow up? Keep at it and you'll lose all your friends. Oh wait, you don't have any."
アラマタの話って, ダラダラ長くて (Aramata no hanashitte, DARADARA nagakute)
つまんないって評判なんだから… (Tsumannai tte hyouban nan dakara)

You’re just making a tangent out of nonsense.
    Boring rumours are boring.

    That's one sentence, not two.
"You know, people say that you go on and on about boring shit."
あんな学校なかなかないもん… (Anna gakkou naka naka nai mon)
People are getting stirred up at my school too, for some reason…
Where is this even coming from?
"There aren't a lot of schools like it."
    MIKA: どうして… (Doushite)
今まで気付かなかったん だろう? (Ima made kizuka nakattan darou)
ほんと, 普通じゃないんだよね (Honto, futsuu ja nain da yo ne)
それにこの頃だって… (Sore ni kono goro datte)
    Why now…
Why did I have to know about this only now?
This sucks. I just can’t be normal,
    not this time, not ever…
What in the name of fuck

"How did I never notice up till now? It's not normal at all! And recently..."

Getting late and that's as far as I got, didn't look at the stuff after. And I skipped a lot of shit but that's only because they're less bullshit than the stuff I didn't skip. They're still bullshit, just relatively less so.

I'm pretty sure that someone half a year into their JLPT4 course would do a better job of translation, because they'd probably have a better idea of how Japanese grammar works. This sounds like someone just ran stuff through Babelfish and tried to make sense of it.

It's nonsensical song lyric stuff. The dou kas aren't supposed to be connected to anything.

Actually had someone I know take a look at the previous version, he said
    Mägentä Gäläxy ‏@MagentaGalaxica 12月30日
@Weisskaiser I was wondering how they fucked up the "douka"s so bad at the start, and then I realized they were trying...

    Mägentä Gäläxy ‏@MagentaGalaxica 12月30日
@Weisskaiser ...to make those bits at the end make sense as sentences, and in the process just totally fucking everything up.

So yeah, basically every separate line I had in the translation above is supposed to be just that, its own line.

I'll be blunt: The dou ka/"won't you please" being added to the end of the bit about dawn is plain silly and makes no sense in either language.
    Mägentä Gäläxy ‏@MagentaGalaxica 12月30日
@Weisskaiser It always baffles me when people throw down words that don't even read like they make sense, and go, "Yup, looks fine to me."

In other news, I restarted SoulSilver in Japanese in order to RNG abuse an Entei, and in the way, I was able to understand what the Maikohan were saying (Though there was some stuff that I couldn't really understand, why couldn't they speak modern Japanese?), and I have to say I cringed a little at what was happening, now that I was able to understand it. Anyone know of forums or chats where you can meet Japanese people with whom to play games online? The Japanese Pokémon metagame looks different since Japanese people on random match have a somewhat different play style that I'd like to try, but you can't communicate with people on your passerby list. It would also allow me to practice my Japanese.

Yeah, we got a lot farther than that. Pretty much all of the plot-related text has been translated and the largest text file imported:
    rm33GcO.png
    (no variable-width font yet)

Anyway, there was a problem with a lack of space in one of the files for the translation, so everything kind of came to a halt until that gets resolved. I think it's been almost a year since that happened, though, so I don't think there's going to be any more progress.

Time to LSC! Taiho eludes me, though my friend got her after 3 tries. My highest level ship as well as my admiral levels are both 60, though I try to spread out the leveling a bit, aside from a few choice Kongou-class BBs and CVs. My SSes also tend to be leveled well because they're used for farming and 3-2 grinding a lot.

And I *finally* got my Ooi this weekend (tells you a lot about that RNG), so once I get Kiso to 65 I should have the godly 3 CLT combo.

Huh, I've gotten three of Ooi up till now. I've been TRYING to level Ooi and Kitakami but they seem to be magnets for enemy fire; Every single time I send them out a cruiser or something will instantly critical them to taiha damage.

And I finally got Ikazuchi... from a 4-3 drop. What the fuck?

My luck with building new ships is just terrible (I've gotten four battleships from trying to build battleships so far; Three were Hyuuga and the last was Yamashiro which I already had by that point). But my drop luck is okay it seems because I've gotten Kaga too. Only need Hiryuu now to clear that one mission.

I'm currently trying to clear 4-3 and 3-2. With the former the stupid compass just refuses to let me get to the boss, and I can only try like twice a day because of the resource cost, and with the latter... Eh, my destroyers need a lot more levelling before they're going to stand any chance.

I level my ships with 3-2-A. Add a sub to tank all the ships (as I said to my friend, they're basically like Rogues in other RPGS, since you can also use them to bypass enemies on certain levels if you have an all-"stealth" group), and hope your other ships destroy/damage the ships enough before torpedo phase, and voila, just one cheap ship to repair.
