Book of Shadows hitting next week, Vita compatible: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/01/08/corpse-party-book-of-shadows-is-coming-and-it-knows-no-mercy/

Oh yes, I do want this. Coincidentally I've been in a horror mood, so this odd January placement may prove beneficial.

There's also a 4 episode OVA series coming up: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-12-22/corpse-party/tortured-souls-anime-promo-streamed

It's pretty interesting how the Seiko/Naomi relationship continues to get top billing across the sequels and spinoffs. From what I've read, Seiko wasn't even in the original CP to begin with.

And since this is officially a Visual Novel thread, I feel like bringing attention to Ren'py, a free program specifically for creating your own VN.

I'm slowly learning the program bit by bit, but as far as game development goes, this seems to be the most ideal solution for people who wish to create one-man projects, at least those with aspirations of weaving a lengthy narrative.

The only major hurdle is the artwork side of things: if you can't draw, you would need to find someone willing to handle the character portraits and backgrounds.

Either way, I feel some people here might be interested in the program.

I'm happy that we're getting Book of Shadows, but I'm probably going to wait for a sale like the original and buy it then. Mostly because I honestly don't know if I'll ever play it, because goddamn I can't handle the first one, but I want to throw XSEED -some- money regardless.

Yeah... I need to figure out how to beat the last chapter. I got the mega unhappy ending and the lol
    dark tower
ending, but I'm obviously missing some stuff somewhere and it doesn't help that the last chapter is 6 years long, and starts with a BS chase scene.

I got stuck in I think the last chapter on Corpse Party, had no clue what to do next. I suppose I should look at a walkthrough but it's been so long since I played it I feel like I'd have to start the whole chapter over.

Book of Shadows will be available on PSP and Vita, right?

So let me see if I get this right. According to folks, Book of Shadows is:

A prequel (with new characters), an in-between (with characters from the original) and a sequel (with...the survivors I guess?), going the RE3 route of jumping between these three points chronologically. Is that accurate?

Guess I'll find out soon enough, as I'm going to start playing this tonight.

In other VN news, I've also been playing Katawa Shoujo. Any kind of work from 4chan is the last place I would expect to tackle a subject like disabilities and handle it with class, but KS pulls it off nicely without any sense of exploitation that people labeled it before actually trying it.

Katawa Shoujo is seriously amazingly good. Rin's route especially wowed me (and happened to be the first one I played). One of the most interesting aspects of the game for me is how Hisao becomes a different person in each route because of his experiences... Having a different author for each part probably influenced that, but I thought that was really cool and everything fit together smoothly.

I totally agree that when I heard "4chan made a visual novel" (which isn't even really true because the people who wrote the game actually don't really go on 4chan much in the first place, as it turns out) I was expecting something completely different. It is indeed quite respectful toward people with disabilities, and honestly I sort of wish they had changed the title earlier in development so as not to scare off people from Japan who might otherwise be interested in the game (because 'katawa' is apparently about as non-P.C. in Japanese as 'cripple' is in English). It's a free game originally written in English that stands on even footing with critically-acclaimed professional visual novels originally from Japan. It turned out to be this huge, emotionally wracking experience that I think anyone with any interest in visual novels would appreciate. I mean, that's just my opinion obviously, but I was really impressed, and I'm glad that 4LS seems to be looking at starting another visual novel because damn I loved their work on this one.

You're almost right. The prequel focuses on people whose name tags you found in the original.

    Thanks. :)

Regarding the quotation, KS isn't really from 4chan. The short story is that a post from there got the ball rolling and got the original forums dedicated to its production created (with a second forum made once a core development team formed), but none of the developers or game concepts really ended up being from there. Essee basically has it right.

We do have other visual novel projects in the pipeline. We're looking forward to announcing them when the time is right.

I figured it would have a link like that, but they're still technically "original" since you now have faces to match with the tags.

Also (and correct me if I'm wrong again), apparently the sequel chapter is unlocked by either completing all the other chapters or having a save from the original Corpse Party.

So does having the latter mean that the sequel episode is available right from the start? If so, is it recommended you still play the whole game sequentially?

Wait, what? Am I reading this right? Are you actually part of the 4LS team? How did I not know this? I mean your avatar would be a hint, but... Well, I suppose given the forum rules it's not too surprising I never realized it, haha. Either way, I have nothing but great things to say about the game. Everybody go play it. I mean it's free for crying out loud.

Edit: The best part is I go to look something up and happen to end up at the KS forums and of course Suriko is the person that posted the FAQs on the forum and everything. (And wrote Lilly's path and some of Hanako's and ALL SORTS OF OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS.) I never connected the dots. I am officially a gigantic idiot. It's okay, I had to find out someday. :P

So I finally bought Corpse Party and as I expected, it's pretty bad. I can't see how anyone would ever find any of this scary and the play for 30 minutes then go back and do all the exact same shit over again with one small change so you can move on is just the worst sort of gameplay imaginable. It really amazes me this developed any kind of following and I'm guessing it's because most people finally get to see their anime chicks tortured and murdered without buying porn.

Or, you know, they just like adventure/visual novel games. :P

    From GAF's thread:
And the final chapter, available only to those who have either played through the first Corpse Party or
seen every wrong end in Corpse Party: Book of Shadows, details events from approximately two weeks
after the first game's conclusion, delving deeper into the mystery as two characters frantically search for
answers in a location even more cursed and uninviting than Heavenly Host Elementary itself…

So I guess having a CP save means you don't have to unlock every Bad End, and will just have the final chapter available immediately after finishing the others.

It'd be neat if they made like Silent Hill 3 and included extra scenes/references from your save, but I guess this is an appreciated "bonus".

I'll assume you're either too early in the game or just jibbing, but either way.

Most people don't enjoy Corpse Party because they want to see the characters get mutilated. The characters are genuinely likeable to the point that you want to see them avoid harm, even though 90% of the time you have no control in the matter. What makes the characterization in this game interesting is that they don't truly develop until they are knee-deep in the horror; before that, they just appear as generic anime cliche types. That doesn't completely rub off by the game's end (fourteen years old, my ass), but by the final moments you find yourself on the edge of your seat not because of what fucked-up scene is going to happen next, but because you start hoping really hard your favorite character doesn't get caught in the crossfire.

The opening to Book of Shadows solidifies this argument: you don't get the full emotional weight of it until you've played through the first game in its entirety. And man, is it a doozy...
Just makes the final line in the first game all the more gut wrenching.

"I love you, Seiko...I love you!"

I almost wish they made it so that you were required to have finished the first Corpse Party before you were allowed to play Book of Shadows. I'm only on the first chapter, but they are clearly hinging on everything on the assumption you played the original.

Also, backtracking to the same locations over and over have been a staple of horror and adventure games since....I dunno, Myst?

This isn't backtracking, I have no problem with that. This is repeating the same sction over and over because you get the WRONG END and there's no way to skip the endless dialogue I've already seen. That's just straight up terrible gameply. And it sucks because, for once, I actually LIKE the story; I want to find out what happens but until I guess the random triggers that the developers put in I have to see the same stuff over and over until I literally can't stand to see it anymore and give up.

I agree there's no excuse for that, although I only had to do this for a long segment once in the first game. Apparently this is sorted out in the sequel with text-skipping and save anytime (including during dialogue) enabled.

It's a bit obnoxious in the first couple of chapters, yes, but the pacing improves dramatically afterward. The Bad Ends are shorter so you don't have to shift through as much repeating dialogue.

Seriously, stick with it, you won't be disappointed.

There was a part in I think Chapter 4 or 5 where I was stuck because I kept doing something in the wrong order and there was no indication that it was even something that would affect the outcome. Took me six hours until I finally googled a walkthrough and found out I had to actually restart the entire chapter because of where I went wrong.

It was plenty evident in the original, but man is Sachiko one ridiculously evil ghost girl.

Except if I interpreted the original game correctly, she's less a vengeful spirit and more a manifestation of all the collective malice and hatred of the spirit world. A force of nature, if you will.

Finished Chapter 1 last night, and....
trying not to make comparisons to this and a certain breakout anime series. Pretty sure Book of Shadows came out first in any case.

I'm curious how people feel about the relationship between
Naomi and Seiko, now that they've openly revealed the latter's orientation (it was more than hinted at in the first game, but you could have made the argument she was only seeking a kiss to mask her sheer terror).

Personally, I think it's an interesting dynamic, even if it's rooted in typical anime fanservice. Seiko openly confesses to Naomi, which causes her to storm out in embarrassment/shame for not reciprocating those feelings. This leads to the two of them separating and Seiko meeting her eventual fate, though it causes one to wonder if Seiko could have been saved had Naomi opened up to her (seemingly conflicted) feelings.

It also calls back nicely to the original ending and the opening to the sequel, almost implying that Naomi now realizes her feelings for Seiko, and regrets that she never realized them until her death.

I'm interested to see if they continue to expand on this in BoS. I'm not prepared to call it a "deep" relationship, but it is deeper than I expected.

Also, what an unbelievable puss Satoshi is. He couldn't muster up the courage to just grab the paper charm, run out of the classroom, and flush the thing down a toilet or something?

That's why I loathe Satoshi. He doesn't deserve to be the protagonist. He's worthless.

The hero of the game is Yoshiki far as I'm concerned. He gets things done.

As for Seiko and Naomi, I think it's mutual, Naomi's inner thoughts in the prologue of Chapter 1 confirm that. She's just not sure how to say it, Seiko is.

When was the prologue supposed to take place, since the game continues from the 'time loop' end?

    I finished Chapter 4. Yeeeesh.
