I'll have to try and see if changing the ownership of windhelm lets me get the title and house from a none complete pole smoker. It might be just me, but most of the stormcloak leaning jarls are real jerk offs.
Mild Civil War Questline spoilers:
After you finish the questline and the new Jarl sits in Windhelm, he will allow you to purchase Hjerim from the steward. However, you will NOT be able to do this until you have completed Blood on the Ice (the murder mystery questline in Windhelm). I was personally unable to get this quest to trigger after completing the Civil War quests, and had to reload an old save to do it. My recommendation is finishing the Blood on the Ice quest, and then doing the Civil War quests, which will allow you to purchase the house without having to worry about bugging it out.
The Whiterun house is a simple home for a simple man, who just wants to kill dragons.
Simple hovels for simple people.
I'll take my estate in Solitude, thank you very much. Once I figured out how to add a persistent apothecary satchel to the alchemy table with the console, it was literally a perfect home.

I'd read about that bug, and figured I'd have to do that. Thanks for the confirmation.
And homes are just places I leave my junk when I'm not out murdering everything that walks, runs, or shits in Skyrim.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
I have a project that I hope I will be able to see through today.
One of my characters is a pure mage, but it turns out that my build is not that expensive perk-wise. Then I heard someone mention you could put weapons on a corpse before raising it from the dead.
So now my plan is to put points in Smithing and make three sets of enchanted Ebony Armor. One for my Huscarl and two for my dead thralls who will now have almost perfect elemental immunity and incredibly powerful enchanted weapons.
I expect them to get lost and despawn in the first dungeon I visit, but they should at least look cool!

I would very much like to know how you did that. I assume by finding the refID for the actual satchel item using the Help system, then placeatme?

Minor complaint...I know it's a fantasy universe, populated with dragons, giants, and a plethora of fictional beings. That aside, the wildlife for the most part looks like creatures similar to the world that you and I are familiar with...even the Deer and Elk. Wait a minute...these creatures labeled as "deer" look and sound suspiciously like our universe's Elk. And the creatures labeled as "elk" look suspiciously like our universe's Moose.
Doesn't detract from the game in anyway, but it made me raise an eyebrow when I noticed it.
I have to admit, this bothered the hell out of me too.
Its like if they renamed 'Horse' to goat and you had mountain horses instead of mountain goats.
Cats called dogs and dogs called cats.
Generally it doesn't detract, but it made me chuckle and maybe wonder if the people who made this haven't seen actual wildlife before.
An elk is a type of deer, and moose are called elks in Europe.

That is all I want. I bought the house with all the upgrades, and was upset when I have to travel SO FAR to get my ingredients. My ingredients weigh over 250 pounds, by the way. So many chaurus eggs.
Look at me. Look at me. Look at how large the monster inside me has become. Crunch Crunch! Munch Munch! Chomp Chomp! Gulp!
Unless you plan to go mammoth hunting you really want the blackened Star of Azura.
First time I went that route I felt slightly guilty. Then I kicked myself and reminded myself that Daedra are evil, even the "nice" ones.
The Black Star can hold normal souls too. I've captured Lesser and Common souls in it.
Also, Charus Reapers having only Common souls is a grave injustice.

It's one of those weird coincidences - this morning I was reading an anecdote about Tycho Brahe, the astronomer, and his pet moose that he liked to get drunk and that finally died when it drunkenly fell down some stairs. The article specifically pointed out that Tycho called it an "elk" in his letters.

You certain about that? I've noticed that black souls also come in ranks, but even with much testing, I have never captured a white soul in my Black Star.
Try it - have no empty gems except the star in your inventory, and kill a wolf. Gives me the "you don't have a soul gem size etc etc etc" message.

Charus in general should be overall more rewarding to kill. After my first time encountering them in a particular ship-friendly building, I've since avoided them like the plague.

I just consoled in The Black Star, dropped every soul gem in my inventory, spawned in a couple soul trap daggers for expediency, and whacked a snow bear. I now have The Black Star in my inventory with a Common soul in it.

The trick really was getting myself positioned so that when the satchel spawned it clipped minimally with the table. Sadly, you cannot adjust that sort of item so it's extremely trial and error. And some objects will just never seat nicely on a given surface, and some will not sit nicely anywhere.
I tried to decorate the exterior of my home with a juniper tree (which looks lovely) but it just will not spawn decently so I gave up.

So we have Skyrim mods in the OP now, huh? Has anyone recommended PhoiPhois Better Snow? It doesn't touch the snowy road texture, unfortunately, but it's otherwise goddamn beautiful.
The Black Star is only supposed to hold black souls (which are always grand souls) but due to a bug it functions as intended, but also as a vanilla Star of Azura.

not to derail, but the real time shooting in NV was MUCH better than in Fallout 3. It basically made the game playable if you didn't want to use VATS.
Also the only flaw in the Whiterun house is that it doesn't have an enchantment table. Everything else is awesome. You're right between three blacksmith shops, a general goods store to sell whatever you need to, and it's cozy....

Correct. So unless you really, really want the follower you can get as a reward (who is actually a very good companion NPC), always go for the Black Star.

I have to say, I strongly agree about the Whiterun house. Running all the way to the castle just to enchant stuff is a little obnoxious, but the house in general is nice.

I've heard this said before. Can you explain why?
I don't know so much about elder scrolls lore, but here's what the internet says;
In the Elder Scrolls universe, Daedra are not easily defined within the ordinary bounds of good or evil, however due to the destructive acts of some Daedric princes they have come to be regarded by most as evil beings. Amongst the majority of Tamriel's populace, the Daedra are seen as naturally evil, as many concepts of evil are directly relative to the mortal world (i.e. destruction is evil, and chaos is evil), though the Daedra are simply different in and of themselves, being entities of change. As such, their evilness is not borne out of malice, but out of genuinely conflicting natures. Similarly, humans who evince Daedric behavior are commonly thought evil, as that sort of behavior often controverts the natural order.
The Black Star is only supposed to hold black souls (which are always grand souls) but due to a bug it functions as intended, but also as a vanilla Star of Azura.
That's weird, I thought for sure it didn't work for me. Maybe I'll have to check it again.

Whiterun's clearly the best town. It'll be nice to mod in a better residence there eventually, though.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
