Monitor flickering, possibly dying?

In the past day or so, I've started noticing the screen on my monitor flickering intermittently. I haven't done anything different software-wise or driver-wise, so I suspect it's the hardware. The video card is an XFX Radeon HD 5770, and the processor is an AMD Athalon II X3, both of which are a year old. The monitor, on the other hand, is an Acer LCD AL1916Wb, which I understand to be at least five years old. I'm pretty sure this is the culprit!

What I'm asking:

1) What is the likelyhood that something else is at fault?

2) If my monitor is failing, how long would I likely have before the whole thing goes down?

3) Is there a way to mitigate this? I mean, I don't know how strenuous Fallout New Vegas is on hardware but I'll stop if it helps

4) How terribly expensive is a replacement monitor going to be?

any assistance in this manner would be terribly appreciated

$110 for a 23" 1080p replacement right now ... the flickering is the light begining to die. It will deteriorate and finally die on you sometime going forward. Could be a day, could be a year ... no real way to know until it happens. If you've got the $110 and can snag the one I linked before the sale ends, that's a monster deal for a good screen.

Thanks for the response, but it started getting worse Thursday night so I just bit the bullet and snagged a new one at the local Futureshop the next morning. Everything is bright and colourful now!
