Power Metal recommendations

A while back I stumbled upon a song entitled Dawn of Victory by Rhapsody. There's something about it that I really like; while it's got a somewhat cheesy tone to the tune, it's drenched in awesome and gets me pumped to generally break some shit and the like.

My question to you is this; what are some other Power Metal songs that sound similar to Dawn of Victory that can produce that same level of chaoticness?

Helloween can at times, so can Blind Guardian. Older Iron Maiden, along with some Judas Priest I would say.
Hammerfall is close I would say, but not quite as cheesey.
DragonForce is you want just fast and cheesey, with lots of guitar solos.
Dark Moor (http://www.myspace.com/theofficialdarkmoor is the easiest way I know of to listen to them) is pretty good I would say.

Gamma Ray. A thousand times Gamma Ray. Not as cheesy as Rhapsody (Though I suppose Heavy Metal Universe might come close...) but their songs are pretty much distilled awesome. Check out the Power Plant album.

Sil... it seems redundent requesting Rhapsody when they are what the OP said got him wanting more Power Metal.

Not as cheesey as Rhapsody, but there is Nocturnal Rites.

Some Kamelot can get you what you want, but they aren't as speedy or cheesey.

Though, just an FYI, Rhapsody did change their name to Rhapsody of Fire recently. Not sure why, but just so ya know. Don't think their sound changed.\

Another band might be Rage. Not exactly cheesey, or as fast, but atleast of what I've heard they are still pretty good.

There is also Symphony X. Also, not as cheesey, but has the sympony backing that Rhapsody does, though not as good of quality IMO. But you can't go wrong with really good 20 minute or so songs.

Oddly a lot of those guys haven't posted in here!

I'm not really huge into Power Metal but Gamma Ray is definite. Same with Blind Guadian. Check out Heavenly and Angra as well.

Dark Moor is alright but you can do better. I wouldn't even bother with Dragonforce.

I'd even go so far to as to recommend some Judas Priest as well, just for fun :P

Definately supporting Kamelot and post-Nightfall Blind Guardian, the latter in particular have some great choruses. Gamma Ray, Primal Fear and Sabaton are all great bands, perhaps a bit more straight-ahead and less Rhapsody-ish. Helloween and Edguy are much more light hearted so probably not what you're looking for, though they are great.

The new Dol Ammad and Therion albums are great, orchestral bombastic power metal in the same vein. Therion generally are less speedy and power metaly, but still really bombastic and orchestral and awesome. And if you like Dol Ammad, Star One might be worth a shot, check out "Set your controls" from the site although it's much better with the intro ("Lift Off"). Avantasia are another excellent project, quite similar to Rhapsody, although they don't do anything new both their CDs are varied while maintaining a consistently high quality. (Skip the overlong "Seven Angels" song on their site, the rest are better and shorter)

Dragonforce's debut Valley of the Damned is pretty ace, it's repetitive and cheesy even by the standards of a genre that prides itself on such qualities, but it's great fun. Unfortunately their later records sound like outtakes from the album. Avoid. For more hyper-kinetic power metal, check out Lost Horizon.

Some Viking/Folk metal may also fulfill the need for this sort of thing, especially if you feel yourself getting burnt out on all those falsetto shrieks. Turisas are pretty much in the same vein as most of these power bands, except with gravel-eating vocals.

Ooh, and maybe try Symphony X, for slightly proggier fare. If you like them, Dol Ammad and Star One, then Pagan's Mind might be worth a shot.

Blind Guardian, is IMHO, easily the best. Their songwriting is hugely superior, and there are few other bands whose albums only get better on the 30th listening. Nightfall in Middle Earth started me on power metal, but nothing I've heard to date has topped it in my mind. All their other albums (with the possible exception of the first two, though even those have awesome songs like Valhalla) are gold (don't listen to the guy above that says just "post-Nightfall"; Nightfall easily represents their most impressive compositional achievement, and Somewhere Far Beyond and Imaginations are must-owns). I own a lot of the power metal recommended here, but very little of it really holds up in the same way for me. Some of it in particular is godawful.

Without trashing everyone else's suggestions (and I certainly do not care for many of them, but you can decide that for yourself), here is my list of stuff I haven't seen mentioned that I like a lot:

Thy Majestie - Hastings 1066 (just that one album). I got trashed in a metal topic for bringing these guys up, which I don't understand because a lot of bands that a lot of power metal fans like are a lot lamer, and for the orchestral stuff, double-kick, and use of choirs there is nothing better. Not particularly original I suppose, but it's not as if a lot of power metal is, and songwriting is very good and the album to me is a shining example of the best of everything the power metal genre stands for.

Elvenking - Wyrd (haven't listened to other albums.) I recently picked this album up on iTunes on a lark, and I'm really digging it. That is, digging in the sense of, listening non-stop for the past two weeks. I really like their sound, and the writing seems unusually solid, even Guardian-esque at times. It has some fantastic songs.

Running Wild is definitely worth a look. Old, and sometimes stupendously cheesy, but classic and frequently awesome. Good and heavy.

I must confess to having a thing for Nightwish, though I will say little besides give 'em a look since sometimes I get bashed for this. I have a lot of friends who also love 'em. Favorite album: Century Child / favorite song: Beauty of the Beast.

Being a BG fan, I should also mention that Demons & Wizards is basically thoroughly awesome. (Second album perhaps not so much though.)

If you're interested in a heavy band with female vocals, I've found Amaran to range from decent to awesome, depending on one's tastes (though I guess they're disbanded now). 'Pristine in Bondage' is a good album.

If you really like Blind Guardian, you should check out Savage Circus too. They sound pretty similar, and it has BG's old drummer.

I'll put in a good word for Sonota Arctica too. While it certainly isn't the best stuff out there, it is still pretty good. I have seen them perform and they do a great job. Nothing quite like dueling guitar and keytar solos.

Also, Iron Savior is pretty awesome.

You are talking to the Blind Guardian trivia master here. :P Savage Circus is more like Persuader Mark II than BG though. (Persuader might be worth a look by the way - very similar sound to BG sometimes, but with a fuckton more hooks and cheese. It's kind of a guilty pleasure for me, but to be honest I usually can't listen to "Evolution Purgatory" all the way through.)

This is what I was talking about. At the very least, I don't see how they're worse than some of the other ridiculous things being mentioned, like Hammerfall.

I like nightwish because it is unique compared to most power metal bands (although technically i would call them more symphonic/power/gothic metal). I really like the lead singer and operatic nature of the band.

They are definetly not my favorite band but they are good.

Recently I have been hooked on Grave Digger, especially the Rheingold and Exacilbur album. Every song on Rheingold is so freaking epic.

The post-Nightfall comment was about them being super-bombastic and chorus-y, not good. I like them, just like I like Gamma Ray and so on, but I'm not sure they are exactly what the OP is looking for. But I was probably being too picky.

Nightwish aren't really gothic, but Epica are, and have classical-influenced vocals on their first album (which is really the only thing I can see being notable about Nightwish) as well as a strong power-metal influence.

Nightfall is super bombastic and chorusy though. I think the OP will like it. And even if the rest of BG is not exactly the same genre as "Dawn of Victory", being as good as they are counts for a lot in my book (and I will admit to initially getting into just the super-epic stuff as well). It's all fast, catchy, entertaining, and big-sounding (or big enough).

By the way, while Rhapsody is probably the most ridiculous act in the genre, they have some damn good songs (they would have some 100% awesome albums if not for god-forsaken mind-explodingly-awful narrative) and I wholeheartedly recommend the "Power of the Dragonflame" album. A have a significant portion of their discography and I would say it's both the best (that I have) and most epic (disregarding the ridiculous thematic material). "Pride of the Tyrant" in particular is an insane song.

Chorusy is good. Bonus points if pipe organs are implemented into the melody.

This (was) gonna be used for an action scene montage for a school project, but since the deadline before starting work on the thing was a few days ago, I had to go with Dawn of Victory. I'm not disappointed in any way, shape or form, but i'll make it a point to listen carefully to most of these requests to make a decision for another one in the near future.

Pipe organs are so fucking rad.

Whereas most rock lyrics focus largely on "the real world" - personal experience, historical incidents, social commentary, etc. - power metal often treats epic, cosmological or metaphysical themes. Many power metal songs draw inspiration from religion and mythology, and science fiction and fantasy, (especially high fantasy)...

If Dio isn't power metal, I'll eat my midnight demon while it's crying the tears of a rainbow.
